SNK might be interesting (BRING BACK LAST BLADE), but no, ArcSys would be much more in line with the spirit of the franchise as far as a dream 2D fighter goes.
I suppose Fire Emblem Caliber would be pretty cool, though.

it's not an in game effect, i think they only did it to hype up the announcement trailer. But i agree, it does look weird.

Hmm...splatoon or pokken then. While I doubt it, it would be hilarious if it was mario party.
They should pull a fake-out like when they announced Wii Fit Trainer for Sm4sh.
Start a trailer with some game that is a terrible fit for APEX and then show it was actually for a newcomer. Chorus Kids could work?
And then end the announcement by showing the new 3DS Rhytm Heaven.

-Pokken
-Splatoon
-Smash 4 DLC (Mewtwo and other content)
-Melee HD (maybe the next GC remake?)
-Nintendo vs. Capcom (could be possible; Nintendo did state a while back they are making partnerships with 3rd parties with their IP)
Anyone of these would be awesome in my book.

A fighting game tournament doesn't really seem like the best place to announce a sequel in an RPG series, let alone one that seems to have actually naturally concluded.

He said there isn't any planned at the time of the interview.
Also, Nintendo will make DLC for Smash with or without Sakurai. I'm sure they're aware that its too big to pass up.

So its a tournament for Pokemon and fighting games- sounds like Pokken to me.
He never said that. The only thing close to that that he said was "We can't focus solely on adding new characters" or something to that effect.
Fantastic news then. More Splatoon is great! A playable demo off the eShop would be great too, but that's a pipedream.
Yes, it's a fighting game tournament but instead the Smash Bros. series is the main event instead of the Capcom fighters.
