Final Fantasy VII turns 17 years old today

That area confused me, as well. Where I really got lost was the train graveyard. I forget where exactly, but there was a car or ladder that wasn't obvious to the eye and I was stuck there for days.

Yep, I got lost in the train graveyard as well. I recall there being a walkable bit of environment that went behind something and it really wasn't obvious that you were supposed to walk up it.

I'm seriously amazed that so many people had an issue with that area, as I did. In all these years I've never seen someone say anything about it. This is blowing my mind.

Best game ever. It has not aged well, but I'm lucky to have enough nostalgia to still enjoy it.

I played it at an old friend's house (who, oddly enough, hasn't touched a game in years) and was instantly hooked; a month later I ran out to Toys"R"Us as an enthusiastic 14 year old with all the money I had saved and bought a PlayStation, memory card and FFVII.

To this date it's the most exciting gaming experience I've ever had.

I got stuck there, I got stuck at the swinging bar at the wall market, and I got seriously stuck at the shinra tower when you have to hide behind the statues to get past the guards (don't ask me how). That last part actually forced me to buy the strategy guide. Oh, and I think I also got stuck at Mt. Corel, where you have to walk past the train tracks.

Whatever, I was 10 and my only prior gaming experience was with sidescrollers. FFVII was utterly mindblowing.

You know the place before this? With the crane? I got stuck on that part for two weeks (which included two additional replays to that part). Even though all you had to do was walk up a board. For some reason, that didn't work and so I became obsessed with the crane (and I was oddly justified by the fact that as a solution to a puzzle had been cut out). My most shameful gaming moment. I was in elementary school at the time, so whatever. The day I solved this "problem", which was my birthday, my best friend bought me a strategy guide for the game (not that it would have helped me), an amazing friend in retrospect.

it wasn't two weeks, but it took me longer than it should on this part as well.

I spent I think 2 hours total in that area. I was pretty overleveled when I finally figured out how to get out.

:') My favourite FF. Amazing pacing, atmosphere, customization, backgrounds, and balance of tone. No other game made me fall in love so hard.

The memory of me and my cousin playing FF7 together will never leave me. This game is so perfect. The excitment everyday turning on the Playstation waiting to play seeing the title intro. Ahhh.....

As much as the FF7 announcement and the PSE event upset people, i'm still buying it. I have to have it on my PS4.

Makes my heart happy to see love for this game: this game caused me to buy a playstation and I can't even count how many times I started new play throughs. The first game to stir my emotions, with Aerith/Aeris. The materia system is still my favorite for a Final Fantasy game. The characters and music we're superb (for the time). Just a masterpiece of a game. People saying it hasn't aged well, of course it hasn't aged well what things do that are 20 years old besides wine and humans. It's a classic of its time, and contender for best game of all time. Why else is it probably the most requested for a HD remake

Yeah, it may be overrated, but it's hard to deny how much this game popularized akiba-kei culture in the west. If it wasn't for FFVII, we wouldn't have a whole generation of weeaboos. Seriously - a lot of anime, manga, cosplay...all came to North America because of FFVII

Ah yes, how many times did you try to kill them before they transformed? That became a sort of personal challenge for me after being lost there long enough.

Funny enough, I didn't intentionally plan my podcast discussion this week to coincide with FFVII's anniversary. I just felt "now is the time" and went with it.

If you'll forgive the shameless plug, I think you might find it interesting: http://shoutengine.com/SouthFigaroPodcast/episode-18-final-fantasy-vii-6269

I spent a good few hours giving FFVII the biggest love letter I can, talking about favorite characters, themes, unused material found in the game and out of it (thanks for the link earlier), etc. We plan to discuss the Compilation of FFVII next week as well.

Also, I've been wanting to reach out and get more people to join in the podcast, either on the subject of FF or otherwise. Feel free to send a PM if you're interested.

I especially need to find someone who has legitimate reasons for disliking FFVII, because as far as I know, they don't exist.

Midgar and Zeal from Chono Trigger are perfection to me. I really hope something captures that feeling again.

I love everything I see about FFXV, but I dunno how well designed the game will be to offer something as rich as Midgar or cathartic as Zeal. I don't think Xenoblade X will be designed like that at all as it's a completely different kind of game.

Quite possibly the game that made me fall in love with gaming. (alongside Twisted Metal, RE, TR, and a couple others)

I have not played a better RPG since.

I don't think many people dislike it, although I'm sure you could find plenty of people who think it's aged rather poorly.

Critiquing it from a technical standpoint is fine. I've done so quite a bit, especially a certain water-balloon heavy FMV.

But as story and characters go I've never heard anyone make a compelling case. My podcast even has someone who trashes FFVI, and he actually came up with some respectable opinions (I didn't agree with them, but they were still worth hearing out).

I've never had that with FFVII.

Why are people celebrating weird ass anniversaries?

You can mention it every 5 years and make a big deal out of it every 10. That's about it.

I still love the game. I don't buy that it's aged poorly. I like its story, gameplay, and aesthetic choices. It's from a time when video games were allowed to feel video gamey and didn't need to hold up to realism or cinematic standards as much, despite all the amazing cutscenes this game has.

I wish I was born a few years before I was born so I could play this game and have the same reactions and experience everyone had back then. I wasn't even born until a few months after this game released. :p

I bought it through PSOne Classics and I haven't gotten very far in it.

When I first reached this area and had no idea how to progress (I'm not using a walkthrough) and just gave up. Returning to this game months later, I crossed through the plank and was in disbelief that it was that easy.

Can't wait for my (bi-)yearly replay this year :)

Btw, I'm just leaving this here for anybody who missed it a few weeks ago:

First, to get the important part out of the way, you lost the avatar bet. And yes, I was aware of a port of the PC version coming, although I did not know that last year. That's a more recent thing I learnt of a couple months ago through necessity.

And no, this isn't what I referred to a year ago. I think that should be apparent considering what I've said in the past, but let's clarify here for the last time. Firstly, for a little clarification since I haven't said this before, but the FF7 project doesn't necessarily refer to just one game. The core of it will end up being a proper home console game and that's going to be the main thing, but it's basically a visit back to the FF7 world again, and there'll likely be a few things surrounding that. A large part of their discussion is likely surrounding this point.

It may not necessarily just be games, but I don't know what it could be either. It's far too early to say and most of this stuff is in early planning stages, so I have no idea about the details for most of it. Nor am I always in a position to know. And to be fair, I don't really care about the extra stuff whatever that ends up being since I don't exactly think the original Compilation was any good. I imagine Nomura needs to be freed up before they start making any real progress with some of this stuff, although he's no stranger to juggling various works. But considering he's busy with KH3 at the moment, that's why my best guess in regards to the development timeline would be for this to kick into gear sometime after KH3 is completed. I have mentioned this point before. This last part is my assumption though. Kitase and him are basically the key people for it all.

This is obviously ignoring the massive elephant in the room, but either way, FFXV and KH3 come first since they're the priority projects at the moment. After that is when any substantial work will begin to happen with the other stuff.

I wonder what they'll come up with^^

Because the game is iconic and altered the video game industry. It is worthy of it, frankly. I don't imagine there will be many threads celebrating the 18th anniversary of Colonial Marines, but it's possible.

I need to play Final Fantasy VII again. It's been at least a decade since the last time I played it, but every time I start to, I remember having to go through Midgar and can't bring myself to start the game again.

I miss playing it. I can't wait playing it on PS4 even if it's a ''port''. I'll be glad to get all the trophies for the game as well.

I remember having a lot of trouble with the dolphin. I wish I could go back and tell my 9 year old self that you just have to not move and hit the button twice.

One of the best games ever that changed the industry for the better :)
Can't wait for the ps4 version. i'll buy this game again and again.

This game is the reason why i jumped into the PSX despite having a N64 (which i hated)...I saw the japanese version running in a local gaming store and i was blown away.

As an early kid sci fi-cyberpunk fan, the art and the atmosphere made it for me.

The final part of the game was amazing...The music was so great.

I remember this confusing me too. Nice to know I'm not alone. I don't know how long for though, since it was so long ago.

Sounds like he's backpedalling from teasing a remake.
Sounds like you can't read.

Oh snap. I call that the Roman Reign's Crusher or the RRC.

Balee dat.

I took a whole summer out to play this one, years after its release. It was amazing. Everyone who is thinking of doing so, go buy a CRTV, PS1, and some original discs. Thank me later.

Bruh, you think it's a remake but it may not be a remake. Sounds like a far cry from confirming a remake flat-out.
