With the New 3DS XL announced for the US, let's talk transfers

This is confusing.

I want to trade in my 3DS XL and get a New 3DS XL.

I have some full games (like DKCR) and some Smaller titles (like Crimson Shroud)

What is the easiest way to transfer it all? I already picked up a 32gb micro for the new 3DS and am only using a 4gb SD on my current XL. However I have items I've purchased that I can't put on the current SD because it's too small
Do you have a MicroSD to SD adapter?

If yes, just copy everything from your SD to your MicroSD using a pc and then start using that MicroSD in your current 3DS XL. Then when you have the New 3DS XL, start the system transfer and say that you're using a MicroSD in your 3DS XL. Then you'll just have to swap the MicroSDs around when it's done transferring over your licenses. Done.

If you don't have a MicroSD to SD adapter, do the transfer between your 3DS XL and New 3DS XL. Once asked which transfer option you want to do, choose PC. Then copy everything from your SD to your MicroSD using a pc, and plug the MicroSD into your New 3DS XL. Done.

Take 4GB SD card out of current XL. Copy everything onto your PC. Put micro SD card in SD card adapter and copy everything onto it, and put in your old XL.

When you do the transfer, say 'no' when asked 'do you have a mini SD or SD card' because you don't (you have a micro SD). It'll then transfer licenses and stuff across to the new 3DS, and then tell you to take the microSD out of your current system, and put it in the new one. After that, the new 3DS should be set. Put your old 4GB SD card back in your old system for trading in.

Alright, let me get this straight.
My current 3DS has a 2GB SD card. I have a 32GB microSD that I'm going to swap into my n3DS when I get it. If I'm right, this method should be the one I want to use, since I don't want to use my PC:

If you have a larger than 4gb microsd card and want to transfer your data without using a pc:
this method will not transfer your mh4u license if you have the mh4u special edition system.
1. Replace the New 3DS's included MicroSD card with your larger one.
2. Start system transfer from the source system.
3. When it asks, say you ARE using an SD card or MiniSD card.
4. When it gives you transfer options, choose wireless.
5a. If all of your current system's data will fit into the new MicroSD card, it will all transfer over at a rate of about 2GB per hour.
5b. If all of your current system's data will not fit into the new MicroSD card, it will transfer all system data and save data for digital games to the new system's included MicroSD card, but you will have to redownload any digital games you may own.

That should work, right? Since the target microSD is substantially larger, my downloaded games should transfer too.

Also, does eshop credit get transferred when you do a system transfer this way? I have money that I want to spend, but I can't fit anything more onto my puny SD card.

That will work, yeah. Any reason you don't want to use a PC? Because if you do this, it'll be much faster and easier. In the end it won't make a difference though :).

As for your second question, yes everything will transfer over. Here's a list of what gets transferred and what not.

eShop balance is actually stored on the NNID account, so as long as you use the same one that should move over automatically when you log in.

I don't want to use my PC because for whatever reason it doesn't play nice with SD cards that have been in my 3DS. Regardless of what position the lock slider is in, the PC always registers the card as read only for some reason. I don't know why it does this exactly, and it might just be an SD card issue, but I don't want to screw up the transfer because of it. I'd rather the SD cards just never left their respective consoles :)

So it's impossible to trade in old 3ds for new 3ds and use the $100 credit to bring down the price of the new 3ds? Instead I have to buy a new 3ds for full price, take it home and transfer, then go back and beg and plead the gamestop store clerks to give me $100 in store credit?

So I'm not really getting $100 off the new 3ds, I'm getting a new 3ds full price and $100 gamestop credit, maybe, if the clerks are in a good mood.
My GameStop told me I could buy the new 3DS XL and take it home to do the transfer. Then I could come back and do a return/rebuy using my current 3DS XL as a trade. The only money I'd net out of pocket is the $50 deposit.

Ok, Ok, I know this is gonna sound stupid but I don't see the answer to my specific position. I'm using my dad's 3ds xl (which had no digital software on it beyond the system's core programs) as a data pack mule while I wait for my New 3DS XL. I have a 16GB MicroSD (in an adapter) currently in that mule system that I plan to move over to my N3DS when it releases in just six days (wow how time flies). I would assume I want to hit "no" on the mini/standard SD card question in the transfer process, but I'm not entirely sure on that, so so someone who has more knowledge on the transfer system (only done it twice, launch 3ds to XL, XL to XL for pack muleing) give a little more insight on the process. Thanks gaf for the help :)

I just did a transfer and I think the easiest thinn for you to do is to copy the contents of your current sd card to the 16gb micro sd via pc. Then, use that 16gb microsd in the adapter with your source system. Have no sd cards in you dad's 3DS and do the transfer.

I find doing this way eliminates all those confusing extra steps with the transfer. The transfer will recognize there is no SD card in your dad's system and make all those choices for you. At the end of the transfer it asks you to just put in your sd card from the source system into the new one. I would then just do the same process when you get your n3ds.

Total time for me took 21 minutes doing it this way.

I'll probably do it similar to that. I've been using this microSD card as my 3DS storage for well over a year now, which is why the switch to microSD didn't bother me. But I'll probably remove most of the stuff on it (putting it on PC) and then doing the transfer so that I'm not sitting and waiting for hours for the transfer, cause I'm really gonna want to get into MM3D.

Gents -- who can point me to the best deal on a 16gb or 32gb micro sd card and the right tool on Amazon for the New 3DS? Gotta order before I pickup my system.

Can I delete my games on the first system, do the transfer and just re-dl them later? My GS is doing system transfers in store that day and I want to get it done quickly. What about Mii stuff, though?

Yes, the important thing is the licenses. The transfer will do that stuff, and your Miis (streetpass data, the plaza information) that's all transfered.

Yes you can do that. But you could also just choose "Wireless transfer (limited)" during the transfer process and it will only transfer your saves and licenses. This is the fastest option if you can't do the PC transfer.

I just called my local gamestop(Was going to pre order the red nintendo 3ds xl but I have a bad sinus infection(Something always gets in the way of me pre ordering this thing LOL) he said that its better for me to pre order because they dont know how many systems they will be receiving(I dont know if its better to pre order it or just wait til Friday I dont want to have to go twice but if I have no choice I will)..and the guy said that I can bring in a 16gb microsd card(That I am going to purchase today from amazon) and that he will install it for me or someone else in the store since they have screwdrivers, and that I dont have to format the card, I assume that is correct? What screwdriver is needed to open up the new 3ds xl? I have some at home in case they dont have the correct one..and doing it this way I can just do the entire system transfer in the store

Is there anything on the 4GB microSD card that comes with the new system? I want a New 3DS with a 32GB card. I have an old 3DS with a 32GB SD card. Can I just buy a 32GB microSD card, take out the 4GB card that comes with a brand new N3DS, replace it with the new 32Gb microSD card and then do the system transfer? Or am I going to lose something that was pre-installed on the 4GB card?

I'm excited that it's apparently super easy to move my crap from my old 3DS to the new one. I already have my microSD card so it should take no time!

Unless you buy a Monster Hunter 4U special edition n3DS XL, then there's nothing on the SD card preinstalled. Regardless, the transfer method also moves the liscense of the preinstalled game on the n3DS to the account of the 3DS you're transfering from so you'll own the game but just have to download it.

Basically there's nothing of real value on the card that comes with it.

The only problem about this whole process is that it ruins the chance of getting the $100 trade in credit at gamestop toward the New 3DS, since you need your old one when you get the new one =(
I went to GameStop and preordered the new 3DS today and asked the guy exactly about this.
He said that this has been something they have been trying to figure out, and what he said they decided to do is sell the new ones to people, let them take them home, do the system transfer, bring the receipt back, then do the trade in and get refunded $100.
I verified the refund would not be given store credit, and he said that is correct. That $100 would be refunded to whatever credit card I use.

I am not fully convinced they are going to actually do the above, but this is what I was just told 1 hour ago.

This whole situation really is a damn mess, and honestly I am very much considering just cancelling my preorder completely because of it. Truth is I do not use my 3DS a whole damn lot, I just think the Gamestop deal is pretty good overall and I want that damn C stick, but really they make it so damn hard to even want to do this.

I've done the same thing mentioned before when going from the original 3DS to the XL near release.

I can confirm a GameStop manager telling me they'll allow me to do the same for the New 3DS XL.

There was a previous topic about New 3DS XL trade-ins around the announcement where a mod was also told similar information.

Edit:

For anyone even interested in seeing the old posts.

Awesome. That makes me feel better.
As long as I 100% get the refund and not GameStop credit, I will do this. Kind of a pain in the ass as GameStop is not that close (I had one less than a mile from my house, but it closed down), so it is not convenient, but I guess it is the best I am going to get.

Thanks for the confirmation.

My local gamestop said I can do the system transfer in store and also bring in 16gb microsd card and they will put it in for me..Im just not sure if I should do the pre order(Im buying the red one) or just go on release day and do everything all at once and do the trade in as well..he didnt know how many of each system they will have available on Friday I assume its like every time a console comes out they get a few just not sure what to do..its not very close to me so I would hate having to go there twice

I think you should do the preorder if you want one. You can still do the trade in deal but preordering it will just secure you will get one. I had to put down $50 to pre-order it. But I think you are right, they might not have a whole lot so if you preorder it you get one.

I might consider doing the transfer in store but I am going to be picking it up Friday after work, and I already have to go to Best Buy first to get my copy of Majora's Mask, so I am not really to excited about sitting in GameStop as it all transfers, as I think it is going to take quite some time.

So when all is said and done, if I do take it home and do the system transfer which I am leaning towards, I will have gone back and forth 3 times for this damn new 3DS XL. The only comfort I find is I actually never played Majora's Mask when it was originally released, so I am looking forward to playing it.

Does anyone have a amazon link or something for the right philips screwdriver? I'm worried about it. There was a kotaku article where the guy somehow bought the wrong one and had to buy a different one. I would like to order it today or tomorrow to make sure I will have it for friday. This whole transferring process is a huge pain. I also want to trade in my launch day 3ds, but I don't want to wait in the store for an hour or more. I already put the data from my sd card in my micro sd card. So I don't know how long the transfer process would take having already done that.

Yeah pre ordering will guarantee that I will get one just not sure if its worth going twice, once for pre ordering and again on Friday to pick it up..figured I would do everything all at once. I already ordered the 16gb microsd card from amazon will be arriving on Monday, and the guy from gamestop said that they do have screwdrivers so they can put in the card for me, but maybe I should bring my own screwdriver just in case(Do you know exactly which one I would need)..do you know if I Have to format the card before I bring it in the store(The guy from gamestop said its not necessary) I feel your pain, going THREE times to get one system is ridiculous..its this whole system transfer thing that is making this into a huge pain in the rear..for me a system transfer would take about an hour its only the virtual console games that would take the most time in transferring prefer doing it in the store since they would know how to do it correctly

I think you should not have to format the card before you go, the system should format it quickly I would think, especially if it is a brand new card. Should be quick.
Apparently it is a #0 screwdriver. I saw that here a few times but I am feeling lazy searching, but I also found a Kotaku article saying that size.

I hear you, going multiple times, even two, is a pain in the ass. If you do just decide to go on Friday, hopefully they have some extra's for those that did not preorder it. Chances should be better if you can go when it first opens. I could not get there until about 5 PM on Friday, but I also happened to be in the area of the store itself today running errands with my wife. That was the primary reason I also preordered it today.

Good luck.

If you really want $100 to go into you new 3ds, there is still a way. First buy the N3ds full price, go home and do transferring. Then go to store again and trade your old 3DS for another N3DS, come home and transfer everything from the first N3DS to the new one. Return the first N3DS for a full refund.

My GameStop manager said as long as I go back and trade my 3DS XL in by 2/15, they'll just do a price adjustment. I just need to bring everything back in. No need for any weird return shenanagins, it just needs to be done by Sunday since that's when the trade in deal ends.

When I called today he said I can come and pre order the red one..they have been telling me that for weeks now so I guess there is no mad rush of people going to at least that particular gamestop and ordering the red system..so you think I should be OK if I go on Friday maybe around 11am? What sucks is that on gamestops site, you can't pre order it online and have it be at the store..they have that option available for Mario Party 10 amiibo package and that isnt out til march 20th yet I cant do that with the system..I will just call the store on Wednesday again and see if there has been any change, he couldnt tell me how many systems they are to be expecting on release day, he says it depends on the number of pre orders. I remember when the Wii U came out, everyone said pre order pre order and I did..I came in that day to pick up the system and they had plenty in stock in the back, so I said back then I would never pre order again but Im still on the fence about it
Glad to know I dont have to format the card, I do have a few screwdrivers in the house so I will bring one just in case they dont have the exact one needed

My 3DS XL was misplaced about a year ago when on vacation. I never reported it or anyting because it was just lost, no foul play or anything the bag it was in the was misplaced.

I did have a few digital titles like MH3U, FE Awakening, and a few zelda titles.

Was curious that when I call them up on Friday to get some support about transferring the licenses will I be able to still use my New 3DS XL and play Monster Hunter 4 on it? I heard it takes about 5 days to sort it all out and just wondering if my New 3DS will be usable.

For the new page - Redmond Stache's WONDERFUL guide to get you through all this.

If you have any download games on your current 3ds, you must perform a system transfer if you want to use them on your new system.

Do not connect a nintendo network id to the new system until after transferring, or it will not let you transfer before you completely delete all data on the system, including your mh4u license if you got the special edition system.

It is impossible to transfer data back from a new 3ds to a classic 3ds or 3ds xl. Once your data is on a new 3ds, it can only be transferred to another new 3ds.

It is impossible to transfer your data if you no longer have the system from which you want to transfer it, even if you keep its sd card.

In order to perform a system transfer, both systems must be able to connect to the internet. The transfer process usually takes between 20 minutes and two hours and requires both systems to have sufficient charge or to be plugged in to a charger. You will have to plug your new system into a charger if you want to transfer as soon as you take it out of the box.

You will need a philips head size #00 screwdriver in order to gain access to the microsd slot on a new 3ds.

If you follow the directions outlined here, there is nothing to worry about. Transferring your system data before logging into your nnid on your new system will ensure that you are able to use your new system to play all digital games you currently own, including any that come pre-downloaded on your new system. Additionally, all of your game saves will survive the transfer as well.

Don't panic.

Note: "Source system" refers to the system from which you are transferring. It is your older 3DS.

To transfer, go into system settings and choose "system transfer" on both systems, and then tell the new system to receive and the old system to send.

NOW WHICH OF THESE APPLIES TO YOU

If you have a larger than 4gb microsd card with a microsd to sd adapter and want to transfer your data:
Skip steps 1 and 2 if you're already using the MicroSD in your current system.
1. Copy all data from the source system's SD card to the larger MicroSD.
2. Put that MicroSD into the source system via the MicroSD to SD adapter.
3. Start system transfer from the source system.
4. When it asks, say you are NOT using an SD card or MiniSD card, because you are using a MicroSD card.
5. It transfers the licenses, then asks you to simply put the MicroSD card into the New 3DS.
6. Replace the included MicroSD with your new MicroSD. You will have to re-download MH4U if you got the special edition system.

If you do not have a microsd to sd adapter but have a larger than 4gb microsd card and want to transfer your data more quickly:
1. Start system transfer from the source system.
2. When it asks, say you ARE using an SD card or MiniSD card.
3. When it gives you transfer options, choose to transfer via PC. If you transfer via wireless, you will have to redownload all of your games, and you will have to use a PC to transfer to your larger MicroSD later anyway.
4. It will transfer some system data, and then ask you to remove the SD card and copy its contents over to a MicroSD card. Do so now.
5. Replace the included MicroSD with the new MicroSD to which you just copied the SD card's data. You will have to re-download MH4U if you got the special edition system.

If you do not have a larger than 4gb microsd card* and want to transfer your data:
*This includes if you are using the New 3DS's included MicroSD card.
1. Start system transfer from the source system.
2. When it asks, say you are ARE using an SD card or MiniSD card.
3. When it gives you transfer options, choose wireless.
4. It will transfer all system data and save data for digital games to the new system's included MicroSD card.
5. You will have to redownload any games you want to play, including MH4U if you got the special edition system, but your save data will all be intact on the new system.

If you have a larger than 4gb microsd card but do not have any data to transfer**:
**This includes if this New 3DS is your first 3DS.
1. Sign in to your Nintendo Network ID (or create one) on the New 3DS.
2. Power down the system, remove its MicroSD card, and use a PC to copy its contents to your larger MicroSD card.
3. Put the larger MicroSD card into the system. You're done!

If you do not have a larger than 4gb microsd card and do not have any data to transfer***:
***This includes if you are using the New 3DS's included MicroSD card AND if this is your first 3DS.
1. Just start playing already!

If you do not have (or do not plan to have) your original 3ds to transfer from but want to keep access to your downloaded games on your new system:

1. Make ABSOLUTELY SURE you have a record of your original system's serial number (the one below the bar code on the sticker on the back of the system).
2. Call Nintendo's customer service number for your region (which can be found through their website).
3. They'll be able to transfer over your game licenses if you have the serial numbers for both your old and new systems and the old system has been formatted. You will not be able to keep any save data this way, however.

Can anyone tell me the exact screw driver I need to remove the NXL's SDCard/battery cover? I heard it was a Phillips 000 but I tested that on my regular XL and it doesn't fit.

Really? 00 fits my normal XL perfectly.

I have a few screwdrivers in our house but not sure if its a 00 or not..do they usually say the number on top of the screwdriver? Maybe I can test it on something that I already own that is the same size as the 3ds xl backing to compare it to
