Majoras Mask 3D - Review Thread

Has anyone who ordered the Skull Kid edition from Amazon have their copy ship yet? Mine says the 19th. I don't mind waiting as long as I get it.

Europe right? Is it also true that there's "New" versions of both the standard and XL 3DS for Europe/Asia but only 3DS XL for NA?
Yes, which is a shame to me considering I really wasn't impressed with the new XL.
Also to be fair, the eye tracking is really impressive when it works. Just don't wear sunglasses while playing games.
It is the same type of 3D tech so if you weren't impressed by the 3D effect before then your opinion will not change. Way bigger sweet spot is nice though.
If they make a new LE that is matte then I may upgrade, but the starting XL SKUs bore me. Both regulars are pretty damn good though.

I imported from Australia last year. Same region as here in Europe. XL.

And yes, every region is getting both the regular and the XL apart from America who are only getting the XL

Uh this game. It's glitched and gotten me stuck like 4 times in the main areas of the game as octorok link. Had to exit out and restart game. Very frustrating.

The improved 3D is more than worth the upgrade. I've had the console for three months and its still stunning to look at.

I hope so. It was hearing you say this a few months ago that pushed me into ordering one. "Well, if richisawesome says this is the case, I guess it is..."

Still find that odd. I mean, I prefer the XL myself because I've got big hands and I appreciate the bigger screen, but was the market for the standard 3DS in North America THAT bad once the XL came out to warrant that decision?

Glad to hear this. I actually don't mind the 3D as a "gimmick", but it was the fact that you had to look at the screen a very particular angle and distance to get the desired effect: THAT was the annoying part of it.

What do you mean? For example, physically stuck in the walls?

Well whatever he is in the beginning of the game, octorok or whatever and yes, like in walls and flower pots. For example in the west part of town, there's stairs with like flowers on them, I've gotten stuck on those. I got stuck in the fence near tingle.

It's a pain.

Heh

Well, now its no longer a neat extra. The 3D is a damn necessity. Its amazing and no, there's no sweet spot anymore.

I've never had trouble finding the 3D sweet spot, but I'm interested in a N3DS since I wonder if it'll solve the problem for my friends and family.

Also, there are games that can use gyro and 3D at the same time. Those games risked breaking the effect, but N3DS should solve that nicely.

Richisawesome, looking forward to reading your detailed impressions of MM3D!

This is where I'm at now, just started playing seriously. Flying through this first cycle, but I know exactly what to do lol

There's quite a few new bits of chatter with tatl that wasn't in the original - a bit of handholding, but nothing bad.

I was bored and booted up Lost World bonus levels. The gyro and 3D did not work at all. However, since the gyro controls are more subtle in MM, I bet it will probably still work.

Also liking the bottom menu.

I'll most likely have the game before I will the N3DSXL since both are on different shipping speeds. If I do get the game prior to the 3DS, I'll hold off on playing it until the 3DS arrives.

Haha, wow, it's really disheartening seeing reviewers treat the game's biggest gimmick (the time limit) with such disdain.
That's not how I interpreted the review. They say the game wouldn't be the same without it, so they know it's important. They just acknowledge it can be polarizing in its complexity.

Oh my god

There's loads of new weird sound effects in cut scenes. The flashback of how tatl and tael met skull kid is a good example. Tatl and tael now have sound in that cutscene and its slightly over the top

Also, you now learn the Song of Soaring IMMEDIATELY as you enter Southern Swamp

Really? Describe these sound effects.

This is an excellent change

Zelda style fairy noises to the extreme for when tael is shivering and when they are warming up skull kid

It was just funny to hear as it wasn't like that before! Its the only change that has bothered me so far...everything else is fantastic

The new map system is great. You can zoom into maps, look around.

Altogether I have to say that this is by far a much much more impressive remaster than OOT3D was. Its so good.

Having a break now. Will complete woodfall with all fairies later

Edit: also I was worrying over nothing over the owl statue saving and the song of double time changes. Now I'm playing it, I have to say they are improvements. Yes. And the bombers notebook is fine too, if a bit annoying having it pop up every time you meet someone new.

While I personally wasn't worried at all it's really cool to hear you've come around on it after getting hands-on with it.

Yeah. It definitely retains the original feel of the game and really doesn't change things. I was worrying seemingly over nothing. It is absolutely fine, the tension is still there.

Every single thing about this remaster is first class so far. You can tell from the very start that this game has had far more love poured into it than OOT3D. Its too good.

OOT3D feels absolutely barebones in comparison to the treatment MM has been given. After literally just finishing a OOT3D play through last night the difference is stark.

And also, the graphics are stunning on the 3DS itself. By far the best I have seen so far since I got my console in March 2011.

I keep hearing about weird framedrops occasionally and camera glitches from someone off-site. Experienced anything like that?

Nope. If anything, the frame rate has been rock solid for me and everything feels significantly more fluid than in OOT3D. I remember when I was in the Desert Colossus in OOT3D the other night and the frame rate dropped to a horrendous level after playing the song of storms and filling the oasis.. Not seen anything like that in MM yet.

But I've only just got to the southern swamp, so who knows.

Camera is fine. No glitches so far. C Stick camera movement is cool but ultimately useless

Alrighty, thanks! ...hoping my copy arrives in time for my bday so I can take advantage of the general end-of-the-world feeling lol

Uh

So far no one has taught me the Song of Double Time or the Song of Reverse Time. Obviously I can play them, and they work but...

...I think the OT for this game is going to have to make the two songs abundantly clear for new players. Not even the scarecrow offered to teach me the songs when I talked to him, so maybe I'm missing something. Maybe the Sheikah stone teaches you it now?

If people play through MM3D for the first time and not realize there is a song of reverse time, they're not gonna have a good time

I can't believe they make all these user-friendly changes but don't hit people over the head with those two songs. Like I said, if I were in charge of this remake, I'd have the Happy Mask Salesman teach them to you as soon as you're human again.

I can't remember how it worked originally, but I'm sure it wasn't that obvious then, either. Weren't they just hinted at, rather than taught explicitly?

Scarecrow says

↑ "If you play that mysterious song backward, you can slow the flow of time. And if you play each note twice in a row, you can move a half day forward in time!" — Scarecrow (Majora's Mask, N64)

when you speak to him. It's never made super explicit. They seem to see it as an optional help for some reason, not an essential part.

Unbelievable. they make all of these dumb changes, yet the most obvious problem with the game isn't fixed.

Inverted Song of Time is so essential, especially for new players. That shit needs to be CLEAR as soon as you get the Ocarina. Happy Mask Salesman should teach it to you on his piano after he teches you Song of Healing. Seriously.

Majora's Mask 3D |OT| PLAY THE INVERTED SONG OF TIME

Get Inside Her!
I feel like when I first played the game, I definitely slowed down time, but not all the time. Only when I really kinda felt like I needed it. It always just seemed really stupid to watch townspeople walking around with their normal animations but almost just floating in place as their movement speed was cut in half.

It's probably okay to not force it on new people. Maybe. At least, I don't think it's as OMG ESSENTIAL as it's being made out to be.

It's possible that MM3D still teaches you it, but at a later point instead. They might want to give you a couple cycles without it so you get a feel for normal time.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
The scarecrow still tells you about both songs when you talk to him, in the observatory he explains it if you whip out the ocarina and in the trading post just by talking to him. Pretty sure there's a rumor that tells you about it and there's a Sheikah stone that hints at it.

Never had to do that in the original. He always mentioned it when you spoke to him at both locations. Now he doesn't.

Its a fucking bizarre change, sorry. Why would anyone get their ocarina out at that point without prompting?!

And the trading post scarecrow isn't the most obvious thing to find. They had an ideal opportunity with the one in the observatory and they fucked it up.

The Sheikah stones in OOT3D tell you literally EVERYTHING, so it would be hard to believe they don't tell you about these in MM3D.

The OOT ones even tell you how to get Forore's wind, and then also how to use it.

Honestly some of the changes do confuse me like the ice arrow thing.

There's a few more I've noticed whilst playing. Lots of new added cut scenes to show where to go - like a new panning shot that shows you how to get to woodfall from the entrance near the deku temple.

Also, they removed the monkeys that greet and surround you after you save koume in the woods. That's...an odd change.

The inside of woodfalls crater looks stunning though with the new firey clouds they added. Wasn't expecting that

Wrong.

You had to do it in the original. I just beat it last week.

As I mentioned above, 15 years ago, you knew to whip it out because two years prior, Ocarina taught you that you needed. Without this reference today, it will confuse new players, I agree.

Uh, no.

You talk to him. Dance to the night. Or choose not to. Quit. He then offers to teach you the song.

You do not need to get your ocarina out to be taught the songs. You can do it by the above method.

And you may have beat it last week, but I've been playing the game for fifteen years.

No, if you don't move time forward, he will then offer to tell you two songs by description. I made a gif of it for the OT... Fuck

Edit: No Ocarina required http://a.pomf.se/voqbpq.gif

Amazon? Preorders on time? Nevah.

There's a reason I will never again preorder with Amazon.

I've never had an issue with them before. They always do release date delivery, but this seems to be the one time they are falling behind...which sucks, because I wanted this to play over the weekend. :/

I want to ask them about it but I fear they'd mess it up somehow.

Are amazon preorders for the LE really not going to arrive until next week? :(

I noticed my delivery estimate was bumped to tuesday today after it'd said friday 13th pretty much since I ordered it.

Talked to CS, and they upgraded my shipping to 1-day shipping. Now it says friday again :) maybe try that?

Actually, I was mistaken, the scarecrow tells you when you talk to him, no need for the ocarina. You probably just skipped it.

I was talking about Gossip Stones, they're exactly the same as they were in the original games, both OoT and MM. The Super Guide Sheikah Stones ( there are two in OoT 3D and one in MM) tell you stuff outright, but that's their function, they're there to help people who are completely lost and want to know what to do.
