Sony: Next (major) PS4 Firmware Update is “Not Too Far Out"

For the love of God Sony please let us organise our front screens and flat out delete stuff we don't want to see.

I do not wish to see Music Unlimited. I already know what I've been doing so 'Whats New' for me is pointless. Booting straight to a tiled Game Library view would be perfect. It's OK don't cry - I promise I still will know how to access the Store.
Music Unlimited will be gone soon anyway, maybe this will be the "spotify update".

We really need MP3 support and being able to have custom soundtracks during games. And I know Sony knows we want it:

You know you can just plug in a USB stick with MP3s and play music from there, right?

Please put the latest PS3 firmware in it... It can't be possible to have a such broken interface on PS4 while PS3's is almost perfect.

That was my first thought. Suspend & Resume would be incredible but who am I kidding?
I'm hoping we can categorize our games / downloads in some way.

It will probably drop when they launch PS Music, which I thought was supposed to be late March.

Yep that's what I was thinking... I believe 29 March is when Music Unlimited is terminated, so assuming that there will be an update to replace that with Playstation Music, it should come just after then.

Shu / Sony please ignore all the requests....

just release more CPU cores / power exclusive for games and more memory so we get nicer running games.

Ps4 for the players - I did not buy Ps4 to be an app box. I use a laptop and Ipad for that.

Suspend / resume / multitasking - please no, shut down everything other than party chat when running games....give us all the processing on games not tat.

Last thing we need is memory leaks and cross game / app stuff causing issues.

I think they need to get stuff like suspend working first though - have you noticed how the dashboard makes the fan noise louder if you have a game in the background? That suggests that the game is still running and using CPU, and then the dashboard comes along needing more CPU and that makes it run hotter.

If they could get suspend running properly, the game in the background should be able to free up its CPU usage - that would mean that you only need to reserve CPU cores for background tasks - any foreground dashboard would then be able to use 2-3 cores because the game isn't using them (and would run quieter). The result might be that Sony can then give an extra core to games because they don't need to reserve it for foreground dashboard stuff. (I would hope that even twitch streaming or spotify in the background shouldn't take more than one core)

Hopefully they give some memory back soon too.

Suspend/Resume

Custom backgrounds

PS4 tells me I'm awesome every 1-2 hours with onscreen notification.

I'd settle for actual useful notifications like letting me know when I friend is online snd remove the odd one that tells me when they have joined a party

also dlna

Update 2.0 was in October.

It is now February and we don't even know what is in the next update. For a product as hot as PS4, I would expect updates every 2-3 months.
Is this serious? What hardware out there has major update releases every 2-3 months? A product "as hot as Apple" doesn't even do that they sprinkle in little updates here and there and spread out the major updates just like every other" good" company out there

I don't really care how they do it, my point is the priority should be in how games run. That's the sole reason Ps4 is winning this gen, how it plays games. Sony should NEVER forget this.

If I wanted an app machine I would of gone 360 to Xb1 route....so would many others.

Just hope game performance is Sony priority #1, #2 and #3. I like the way loading and booting games is another priority. This is good.

Sony need optimise their API's / Ps4 resources and come out fighting against the DX12 hype train that MS will unleash on them. The biggest danger for Ps4 is if XB1 is seen just as powerful....

A few app complainers on message boards is not important, its not why Ps4 is successful and should be just ignored.

The ps3, 360, wii u and xb1. But I guess it's more reasonable to compare the ps4 to smartphones.
I wasn't comparing to smartphones, was comparing to companies in general, considering I was quoting a post that clearly stated "hot product" and not "hot gaming console" . And neither of those systems released major updates every 2-3 months. Let's be very realistic here.

Is DirectX 12 not releasing for the PS4?

There isn't a sole reason why they're winning, but the biggest two are the initial lower price and and the shitstorm MS spunked all over itself in the run-up to launch.

If we don't see this update at GDC we probably wont get it until at least E3. The last time sony announced a major update coming soon it took months. Hopefully this major update actually adds something of value unlike the last one.

Is DirectX 12 not releasing for the PS4?

Nope. DirectX is a Microsoft thing.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Will it be 2016/17 before I can play movie files on my PS4? Is that when their 'most powerful console on the market' matches the fucking Vita's OS, which THEY THEMSELVES ALSO DEVELOPED. Arrrrrrgh what the fuck is even going on over there?!

What if the game running is a MP game? Can't suspend a MP game if it has to keep syncing your data with the MP servers. You'd be kicked from the match because your game is not responding to server requests.

Could add lightweight MP frameworks that keep running when the rest of the game is suspended but then you'd effectively have to update every released game.

What Direct X12 hype train ? It will change almost nothing for the Xbox One.

I can't believe friend notifications has still not been implemented.

Completely unacceptable, possibly the most basic thing to do.

Probably still months away then :(

Not too far out = months

Soon = weeks

Very soon = days

Is how it works, right?

But at least we're talking 2015 :)

Some of these "features" are laughable in their simplicity bearing in mind how long they've taken.

Custom backgrounds? Setting a jpeg to show up on the dashboard? Fuck, I could probably code that!

People bitched that with the ps3, whenever they would turn it on, they would have to update it.

I think Sony is scared of repeating that with the ps4.

What will DirectX12 change for XboxOne?

Nothing but fuel the console wars I spose. Why would the vast majority of end-users care about the details of an API? Are they supposed to get all excited that their games was made with C++14 instead of C++11?

Anyway, I just want DLNA support.

lol yeah same here! It's like there's only 1 person adding features and s/he just herp derps along slowly.

Not if it's adding stuff instead of just... "stability."

It's funny because no one would be bothered with frequent updates since you can download them in the background.
Sure most of them block you from accessing the PSN but it's still way better than the PS3 updates which effectively locked you out of using the system + very slow wifi downloads.

I'm sure no one would be bothered with monthly updates. It's the stability update notes that drive everyone crazy... I mean 15 stability updates and my PS4 still wobbles???

Needs to be brought up to the level of last gen systems. Once they do I wouldn't care if they didn't update it again.

Good luck closing the gap with that DX12.

Last I knew streaming use the separate arm processor hence why it doesn't effect game's, and why you can't stream and Remote play.

They desperately need folders. That endless horizontal row is a nightmare for huge game libraries. Even the PS3 got that right from the near start.

Don't you read MisterXMedias blog? DX12 is the second coming, the thing they've been waiting for!

"With DX12 the Xbox gets a up to a 400% boost. When a game is coded to use all four command processors, we can have up to a 8x performance"
