Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove (PC) Kickstarter - $400k goal (Up: Funded)

Thanks so much for posting! Would love a retail release of this on ps4, etc but in whatever case this is instantly backed. Think I might go with the rapmaster reward. Tj and earl figures!

Well, the first thing to note is that this is destined to get funded on name alone. .

I think you're dramatically overestimating the love for toe jam and earl

They made 1 good game (the first one) and then 2 pretty bad games after that

It's like trying to reignite the boogerman franchise(which was a failed attempt as well)

I'd already backed before seeing this topic, I loved the original on the Mega Drive and so did my Mum too. I know she'll be getting this if it comes to consoles because she doesn't play PC games. I hope it gets the funding, looking forward to the finished game.

Not exactly what I envisioned for a sequel, but close enough. Makes me realize that Don't Starve could've easily been a Toe Jam & Earl game, which would've been epic.

I really hated the art style. Like, big big time.

I'm a big fan of the first game, but this i'm not going to back it up. Hope it does okay and people enjoy playing it.

Don't know if I like the art-style or not, but it looks better in motion and is still early. Want a new TJ&E-game so much and the rewards are great, backed at $150-tier, but actually I want to go up to $250 but that is a lot more than I can spend...

I had no idea Sega didn't own TJ&E. Probably for the best, though. Definitely backing this as soon as I get paid.

Those rights are confusing. Explains why tj and earl probably never were featured in those sonic and sega racing games though.

At least Toejam and Earl had a good game though.

Hmm... I really think there is a mass more love for tj & earl than boogerman. They were even pretty close to being segas mascots for some time.

Anyway I liked all three games so really hope this works out as I love the characters.

I honestly thought TJ&E were Sega properties. Huh.

Sega owns the games but not the IP or the characters, that's why TJ&E never shows up in the cameo games and why the re-releases are usually separate from other bundles and such--they need to renegotiate a deal with the owners every time.

I love everything in the periphery of this game, but when I see the gameplay video I don't like what I see... too early. would buy shirts/ sweatshirt tho.

I almost never back a kickstarter, but this... might force my hand!

I hope those are place-holder sound fx though.

Cult series, for some reason, tend to have super loyal fans who are willing to spend money to get what they want. Zero doubt in my mind that this will get backed and I say this as someone who hasn't even played the Toejam & Earl Games.

Same.

Don't like the first game, either, but that doesn't mean I don't respect its place in history (or even really its gameplay).

Just looked at the reward tiers. Wow, they're going to get destroyed with physical reward fulfillment at low tiers.

3 and a half hours and they're at $29k which while not awful isn't great for a $400k Kickstarter. The high average backer amount is worrisome because it means that mostly diehards are donating right now which means that funding is more likely to drop off drastically. For this to have a great shot of success, they're going to want at least $120k in the first day which seems unlikely (although they might manage it over the first 24 hours). I'm guessing this is going to be a Project Scissors sort of situation where it doesn't look like it's going to make the goal for much of the time before maybe pulling it together at the end.

Well, the first thing to note is that this is destined to get funded on name alone. As soon as the press shines light on this those pledges are going to rocket. The second thing that comes to mind is that are they showing this too early? Those screenshots look very experimental prototype stage as opposed to finished form. I was a massive fan of TJE2 on the Megadrive (which TBH is where most of the fans of the series come from) and not so much TJE1.

I would have preferred a successor to that in the same style. Honestly I feel like they're drawing inspiration from the wrong game here. He is the original creator so he would know best but TJE is predominantly famous for the second game and not really the first. The second game is the game people remember and love. That said I wish them all the best. Hope that the game and the art improves considerably over the course of development. Just feel like the game should look better than this.

Showed the game too early IMO. TJE2 looks miles better than this and that game was eons ago and on ancient hardware.
