Code Name: S.T.E.A.M | Review Thread

Well, that gives me hope that what's holding the game back can be fixed if Nintendo wants to. All they need to do is patch in an "Enemy skip-" function, or a Fast Forward function. I mean, Advance Wars lets you skip your enemy's turn, why not S.T.E.A.M.?
If you played the game, it's a mechanic built into the game. It allows you to counter attack while they are taking their turn.
But yeah, a fast forward could work.

So, it released friday here in europe. I haven't really followed the game, will it be digital only or can I also buy the box in a store? :0

I stand by what I said. Okay maybe saying that it's "SMT IV team" is too specific but how many teams does Atlus even have outside of P Studio and the folks that worked on SMT IV? It just made sense to me that the devs that finished their work on SMT IV would continue working on th same IP. The thing is just that why would Nintendo go to Atlus and say "oh we would like to use your very low-key IP but still develop the game spending our resources". SMT X FE can easily be connected to a larger undertaking from Nintendo where they licensed out their IP's in an attempt to pad out Wii U's release schedule without taking their internal developer resources (which technically IS isn't a part of but might as well be looking back at their history).

Then again maybe I'm wrong but I'd at least like to hear why that is in contrast to the points I made above. It's not like we can do much else but speculate about the game.

You were presenting your speculation as fact, which is why you got called out

How is "too hard" listed as a negative? Isnt it a characteristic of the game that defines it, rather than being a problem?

A challenging game is not a bad game.

No it doesn't. It releases on May 15. It's a retail game of course.

It makes sense when you think about it. It's all about real-time line-of-sight so it needs to actually perform the move. There's likely some AI crunching going on too based on that line-of-sight so it's entirely possible it can't be sped up and maintain correctness. Now maybe they could have added a new 3DS mode that took advantage of the extra processing but I'm guessing it was too far along.

Not too surprised about the polarized reviews. The waiting around during enemy turns in the demo hurt a lot, but the rest of the game seems resoundingly solid. I'll probably pick it up, and I'm crossing my fingers that Nintendo pushes a quick and easy patch that allows fast-forwarding through enemy turns by holding a button, ala the Streetpass Plaza. That simple change would likely make the game much better.

Most reviews seem to have an issue with the difficulty curve rather than outright difficulty level. A challenging game still needs a good difficulty curve - look at Super Meat Boy, for instance.

Oh, so tales from your ass. Gotcha.

Well, I wouldn't say it's the SMTIV team, but people would say it's a safe assumption Atlus is the lead developer on this game as that's pretty much how all of the Nintendo third party collabs pretty much worked.

I thought Duckroll's comment was uncalled for as well since Nintendo has done this a ton of times (Pokemon Conquest being a recent example).

Somewhat polarizing reviews is what I expected, didn't really care for the enemy's turn length in the demo and I've got a backlog, will probably pick it up at a later time

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
The art style is a huge turn off for me; though I'm happy IS was given the opportunity to develop a new IP - I hope it isn't the last from them.

Yea, Sendou. Time to flip those reviews around. The consensus is positive. No need to let that stupid 4/10 outlier dictate the discussion/perception/whatever.

With fairness, Walker's review does seem to justify the harsh score. The gameplay for him was beyond fun, it seemed like the only positives were the art style.

How do they describe the curve? Hard in the beginning, easy by the end?

Niche game getting niche scores, not surprising. I'll wait for GAF impressions before I dive in. Plenty of other games just came out to rush into this one.

They aren't even that polarizing tbh.

Most are good, 2 are above average and 1 is bad.

Yeah and the consensus is being reflected on the OP as it stands. It's not my fault if people refuse to read beyond the first line of the OP. GameSpot's 4/10 is at the top for two reasons. First being that it was the first review I saw. Second is that I find it more interesting to hear what an outlier has to say rather than the ten or so others saying that it's a 8/10.

Fair enough. I'm just pissy about them being always the first to post their lower scores for some reason. Happened too many times for me not to notice it...

the fuck is a nintendo force

The unofficial successor to Nintendo Power.

Nintendo Force is a bi-monthly magazine that centers upon various Nintendo products such as the Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, and Nintendo DS. On December 21, 2012, IGN editor and magazine founder Lucas M. Thomas announced his intention to release the magazine, stating that he had begun to plan for the magazine upon hearing of Nintendo Power's cancellation.[1] The magazine includes staff members from IGN, Nintendojo, Destructoid, 1UP.com, GoNintendo, the writer and founder of the online comic Brawl in the Family, and Nintendo World Report, among others.

They posted their review at 19:00 (my time) sharp. There's no real conspiracy here. Others just were slower to post their reviews this time around.

I thought the demo was pretty fun, flaws and all, but I could not see this as a full priced game. If it had been more reasonably priced at like $10 or $15, I might have bitten.

Reviews aren't sounding too promising, but I'll reserve my judgment until I actually try the demo, which I haven't.

Reading about this game reminds me that I need to start Valkyria Chronicles...

I know they came first but I honestly believe you're doing a disservice to Code Name: Steam by putting those negative reviews first. People are going to see the 4/10 and connect with that. I'd understand if the scores were generally low but it seems like that's an outlier. I just want this new Nintendo IP to do well.

It seems like the demo is representative of the full game, I liked it besides the awful downtime watching enemies doing their thing.

This really confuses me. Why the massive gap between release times?

Because reasons. Nobody knows, really. Typical regional scheduling discrepancies.

Except for when you get to harder missions and need to know what they're up to. Which wasn't the case in the demo, obviously.

I think the Nintendo logic is that since most of the characters are from American folklore, it should be released in North America first, because it'll probably bomb everywhere else since those people wouldn't know/care about the IP and its concept.

Hmm a game I think I need to try. Love high difficulty games and most reviewers seemed to have enjoyed the game. I believe they gave Zombi U a 4/10 and that is one of my favorite Wii U titles thus far. Mixed reviews from Gamespot only make me want to try a game more nowadays, even more so when the game seems to present some challenge.
