I'm a complete newb when it comes to crpgs, really the closest I've played is Dragon Age Origins. How much pausing is involved in battle? Is there any real time battle stuff or is it pause pause pause pause?

A lot of pausing. You can try and mitigate it by speccing for passive bonuses over lots of active abilities.

It is up to each player. On easy, not much pausing will be needed. On harder difficulties, you will need to micromanage your team.

Origins is a good intro. This game has a lot more to do per character (through you could always purposely make character builds that are more hands off if you wanted to). So you'll be pausing more than in Origins, but there will be plenty of times where you'll be running the gam ein rela time. There's also a slow mode, whish is I believe half speed. You could possibly run most of the battle that way with much less pausing.

2/3 speed.

I feel like Easy and using slow mode will be more than manageable for new players without requiring tons of pausing and constant micromanagement.

I'm kind of confused now. Looking at my backer pledge and rewards on the backer website they say Backers get Exclusive Backer only in-game Item and Pet. But they also have Pre-order bonus Item and Pet that everyone keeps pointing to as those Backer rewards. Are Obsidian considering that the same thing because they aren't. I don't really care too much, just pointless fluff, but I'm sure some people won't be too happy with that.

I really just want my Novella, Collector's Book and Almanac. As well as the Cookbook obviously. This weekend would be a nice time to unlock that stuff. Counting down the days and hours to release would go by far quicker and far more enjoyably if I was able to dive in and read some of those books and immerse myself in the lore and setting, rather than have it sit around when the game comes out because I'll be too busy spending my free time actually playing it than reading the bonus content.

Can't wait to try me some recipes ;)

I cannot believe Bloodborne and Pillars of Eternity are releasing in the same week. It's like two of your biggest crushes walking up to you and asking if you want in on a threesome.
More like both of them asking you out and asking you to kick the other one in the shin.

Did they said anything about the ship date of the physical goods ?
I noticed on my profile it said shipping soon .

Would be good to have the manual on release day , but I doubt it since I'm in Canada ...

Is it disgusting that we support the game to be made, but journalists get codes before we do? I might have gotten things mixed up, so correct me if I'm wrong here please.

"Here's your money Obsidian. You won't go under now"
"Oh we have to hear someone's complaints and hear them bag on us about early copies?''
"Oh that's just swell"

Nah. You could lay down a pre-order for a game that is still in development and not get it before journalists get their review copies. No real difference here. I don't mind.

Yeah, but they come out as if we're a faux-publisher. Most of the time they'll make the game regardless. Unless this is the businessmen just putting us in our place. They have more money directly by the consumer. You can't be dumb about it. It's written in the stars or on Kickstarter's website.

So I'm in the mood to get into an isometric classic RPG, should I snag Divinity: Original Sin or wait for this? I don't have a ton of experience with the genre.

Get this. These guys are well known for the genre. They have more experience working the D&D brand. No offence to the Divinity team. I think this will satisfy more than just the isometric RPG side.

Reading the first few lines of that release, I was transported back to the day I read that a little game called Baldur's Gate had gone gold.

It's been a long wait.

I guess that's how long it takes when you're not being controlled by a bigger corporation into making/changing a game how they want it. :D Plus the added benefit of creating a game you genuinely want to.

I cannot recommend Divinity: Original Sin enough, it is so goddamn good. Though I have not played PoE I expect they are dramatically different. So get Divinity now, then buy PoE when it comes out :)

Depends on what kind of experience you want. They're quite different for a large variety of reasons. DOS is a Turn Based combat system, a very good one though, with very inventive and unique combat that lets you play around and experiment with environmental effects and elemental reactions. But it's pretty weak and barebones when it comes to the plot and characters. There's really just not much there when it comes to that.

PoE though is a modern reimagining/evolution of the classic IE style games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment. Realtime w/ Pause combat, big party, lots of dialogue and story elements with meaty characters and companions.

Backer #122. Wow I was quick when this happened :D

Also, POE might need some post release patches to realize it's full potential. Divinity has already had all that extra work done on it. Divinity is definitely recommended to anyone who is even remotely interested in this genre.

Divinity is an excellent game, but it's very different than this, with the exception of the isometric camera.

Divinity's world is much more whimsical, and the combat is turned based (excellent btw). Pillars strikes a more serious tone, and the combat is real time with pause. Definitely more involved too, lots more abilities to deploy, more complex mechanics at play. The lore of the world and the level of background and interaction with your companions is also several notches beyond what Divinity does.

I feel you can't go wrong either way, but personally, this game is almost certainly going to score higher for me than Divinity, YMMV.

Whatever you decide, don't hesitate to pick up the other game once you're done though. And also look into Wasteland 2!

It seems like a weird thing to be upset about. The perks of backing were spelled out during the kickstarter campaign. I don't believe Obsidian ever promised every backer that they would play the game first.* Besides, your copy of the game isn't losing any value because a relatively small number of journalists can access the full game a week early. And assuming you want the game to succeed, getting the word out on time through some of the ordinary channels makes sense. I wish Obsidian had been able to deliver review copies even sooner so the game could have had a multi-week hype cycle in the gaming press.

*Backers who donated a sufficient amount have had access to the Beta for a long time. Some journalists would have loved Beta access but couldn't donate AND cover the game.

Anyone know if we'll get our digital goods before release? I would love to spend the last few days of the wait reading the guidebook stuff.

Didn't even remember how/when I backed this but evidently I'm number #71. Is there an account registration required on Kickstarter before backing? If there is, I probably lost out on the top spots because this was my first backed project.

I'm actually surprised this is the first project I backed because a) I have over 30 projects backed now and b) I remember being invested (not financially obviously) in multiple Kickstarters before this one, including Broken Age, Shadowrun Returns, Banner Saga, Wasteland 2, Carmageddon Reincarnation, Defense Grid 2 and Planetary Annihilation. I guess it took a while to convince me to actually put my money into Kickstarter but with Eternity there was zero hesitation and it pretty much opened the flood gates for me.

For those that have played the beta, how difficult is this game? Should a relative CRPG newbie be playing on easy?

I've never played any of the Baldur's Gate games or anything, so this is pretty much my first foray into the genre (aside from the recent Shadowrun remake, which I'm not sure counts). For what it's worth, I found Dragon Age: Origins quite difficult and ended up switching to easy about a dozen hours in...

If you found Dragon Age hard then you'll definitely want to turn this to it's lowest settings.

Go for Easy with this one and welcome to Team #HereForTheStory.

Definitely leaning towards easy but this, from the other thread, is kind of a bummer if true...

One problem with playing on easy in this game is you'll miss out on a lot of gear because easy removes enemies from encounters rather than scaling them down

You'll likely never get to face certain types of creatures either

But that's the best way to do different difficulties, the encounters are different, not just the stats. And I'm sure the best loot will be hand placed in the map, not as monster loot.

Having played the BB extensively:

  • If you played a RPG game with NO DEPTH (like playing Dragon Age 2 or Inquisition), play on Easy
  • If you have played a RPG game with some sort of depth (Dragon Age Origins (PC), Witcher) - play on Normal
  • If you have played an IE game - Hard
  • Path of the Damned = Reserve for your 2nd playthroughs and beyond

So what if I put 150 hours into Dragon Age Origins... on console.

I do have the backer beta... guess I should fire that up.

I would hope that you didn't take the list recommends people who have played a pure twitch based action game to play what is essentially an Infinity Enigine game on Normal seriously.

I need to look at what the difficulty settings entail, but I'm leaning towards Hard and a few of the other settings turned on (like hiding greyed-out dialogue options). I've played IE games extensively, though I wouldn't call myself "good" at them exactly.

Go with Hard. You have played IE games, that's honestly enough IMO.
