Xenoblade Chronicles 3D: reviews thread

I have a Japanese n3ds but my Japanese isn't great, is there a good resource out there that will help me understand everything? A particular walk through that won't ruin the game entirely?

The 3D effect is almost like the one found in the average Lego game on the 3DS, just with a little more depth. Such a missed opportunity.
By the way some were asking about music compression and I can say that, with the headphones on, I can't hear any noticeable difference from the Wii version. Now, the 3DS speakers are another thing... (still really good)

So dolphin 3d using hd texture pack is still the way to go. This is for portability, not prenium 3d experience

What I've always found surprising about this release of Xenoblade was hearing people discuss how the Wii version, graphically, looks so much better.

Yet this is hardly the case.

Because the Wii version looks like butt.

While the N3DS version may be slightly worse, at least it's on a smaller screen to help disguise it. Of course, I've seen the Dolphin screenshots, and the game looks much lovelier there, but from what I've seen of the N3DS version, it's hardly so much worse to the extent that the Wii version is far and removed the superior version. I'm glad that this appears to be the main criticism of the N3DS version, and that it's an otherwise fine port.

Is it possible that's to save resources? Is having the two viewpoints further apart more taxing on the hardware? I have trouble imagining how this could be an artistic decision.

The combat system is indeed pretty bad.

But the acting is quite good (and you get used to the voices), and the story is definitely not cliche as it seems to be.

If you can look past the battles, then you will find a pretty good game underneath it. You should try it again.

theelights its one thing to say that you didnt like the combat sysem, its another to just say its bad when its anything but.

You can find the entire script online. Just follow the waypoints to get to the next zone.

It wasn't; the devs have been very honest and open about their struggles to make this port work. I think they did the best that they could.

It does increase the field of view the deeper you make the 3d effect....

And increasing the field of view does increase how much geometry is on screen.

And with how much more is seen over distance, an expanded fov on a game as large as xenoblade would be a pretty huge difference in how much is being rendered on screen. Just expanding the fov a little bit in dolphin exposes the culling system.

Well, I've already discussed that (offering again to go look for the link of the thread where I say that), but I'll say that the battle system in this game is bad (the customization is great, when you actually start fighting an enemy then everything goes out the window).

I found it the most educational thing to use the free camera in games such as Xenoblade while using Dolphin! Stuff to the extreme side, and behind, the player isn't there until the the player moves the camera to look at those places. It was cool to see how the grass sprites literally form a triangle in front of the player but they wouldn't perceive it that way, they'd perceive it as though there's grass everywhere :p Or in fixed camera games such as Rune Factory, even tops of buildings would not appear until they were precisely within the view of the player. So I understand how even pulling back the camera a little bit more, would necessitate the rendering of an even more vast amount of stuff in the distance.

As for Xenolade 3D, it sounds like the game is "Portable Xenoblade" and I hope the handheld audience that Nintendo has will be curious about this game. I suspect many of the New 3DS owners are core Nintendo fans who like The Legend of Zelda. I hope they see Xenoblade foremost as one of Nintendo's epic adventures alongside games such as Zelda, even if the gameplay may be foreign to them. I may be projecting, but as a Nintendo gamer who started with the N64, I did not grow up with any fondness or predisposition to JRPGs, so what piqued my interest the most about Xenoblade when I saw it for the Wii was that I saw what could be the epic adventure I'd always wanted Nintendo to make. I myself will use the $10 Best Buy giftcard that came with Monster Hunter 4 and GCU to get Xenoblade 3D for a good price, and will have a new way to play a game I know I will return to with fondness many times throughout life, the same way I do so with some books, haha. (By my calculations, I'll be getting it for $23.75 including tax.)

Just bought a N3DS today after the restock, so I am officially boarding this Xenoblade hype train. I am so excited to play this. I'm still kinda in shock that I can play Xenoblade on the go.

I hope NoA doesn't try to use this to determine a US release of Chronicles X, they've really been screwing up lately, despite the backlash.

I wasn't expecting reviews this good! Nice to know the port holds up well. Still not sure if I'm going to pick it up, but it's looking more likely than it was yesterday.

Worst RPG last generation. I'd honestly rather play Final Fantasy XIII again than Xenoblade.

Already got this on preorder. Glad to see the reviews are good. I know it will be a graphical downgrade from the Wii version but this is way more accessible. Look forward to using my Shulk amiibo for things too!

My review for Attack of the Fanboy is also up.

4.5/5 - "Offering up some of the most unique gameplay to the genre over the last decade, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D shows exactly why the game was so beloved on the Wii and this time it is actually affordable."

I don't really understand your reasoning on that last part?

isn't it only $10 less than the Wii version was at release?

You're half right. Well, maybe a quarter right. Both Xenoblade and FF XIII are excellent games. FF XIII is unfairly, tragically underrated.

They're too different to compare, though. FF XIII is a straight-up JRPG; Xenoblade is basically WRPG with a JRPG story/aesthetics.

I love the game and will totally buy it... right after I get a New 3DS. Guess the chance of a Xenoblade LE New 3DS is down the drain.

I already have this for the Wii, but I'm still a bit excited for this.
I've only played like...maybe 4-5 hours of the game, and even though I enjoy it I always find myself with "something else to do" when I'm getting ready to play a game.
I'm hoping I'll get further into the game with the handheld version because I like to play a little bit of 3DS or PSP while I'm lying in bed right before I go to sleep.

ONE MONTH LATER:

Oh God, I'm so tired...

I start going cross-eyed when I have it the 3D Effect on the full amount anyways.

You're fortunate then, in that you can tailor even the deepest 3D effect to your taste with the slider. Games that have shallow 3D as their maximum will remain shallow forever though. :(

Looking forward to that one. I can live with the downgrade, the big plus for me is that I can play it while commuting and don't have to play it stationary. I tried with the WiiU gamepad but that having on your lap while holding another controller just sucked hard.

Yes I do know and have that stand. But when I put it on a table, I could have also used the TV. My shitty eyes needed it to be closer ;-)

I would have been just perfect if the Gamepad would let you control the game. But unfortunately this is not gonna happen.. :(

I want to do a NG+ run soon on Wii, mostly just to hear Melia (Jenna-Louise Coleman, who I now know of having been introduced to Doctor Who after finishing Xenoblade).

Very nice, not like I expected them to somehow fuck up the best JRPG of last gen. The graphics were never gonna match up though. I'm ok with that and will be buying this. Maybe not day one but eventually.

I'm very torn on JRPGs, it's very much a love/hate thing for me. But it sounds like the convenient options are similar to Bravely Default as to offer you as much ease of use as possible - I don't think I can ever go back to random encounters, so that sounds great already. The many warp and time skip options and the forgiving deaths sound good as well.

Sounds like a fantastic game to just relax with and experiment, which is what I love mist about the genre: Just being able to hang out inside a massive world, and it seems like this game does this better than any other handheld title.

Definitely buying this!

Also, Xenoblade doesn't really feel like a real jRPG. I mean, the story and artstyle and all fit, but gameplay is more like a single-player MMO than a jRPG (which is good for your desire to just relax in a massive world and experiment).

At least 2 of the reviews mention the framerate can get a little suspect during battles with large enemies or when a lot of effects are going off (which was expected). I haven't yet read anything that says you can shore up the framerate by turning off 3D, since it seems like all the reviewers are playing with 3D on.

In the Wii version, the frame rate also dropped during large boss battles. Made pressing the B button in time (to fill the party meter) sometimes a matter of luck.

One of my favorite games, and I would have enjoyed it even more on a handheld due to its insane length.
