GTA V PS4/XONE Downgrade - Version 1.00 Vs 1.08 Comparison [edit: BUG]

Tree/branch/bush sway was glitched at launch, we thought it was a downgrade; but it was a glitch. Which was fixed.

Car destruction was glitched after an update, we thought it was a downgrade; but it was a glitch. Which was fixed.

This could be a glitch too.

I forgot about the trees and stuff. Rockstar is usually pretty good about stuff like this and it seems weird that they would downgrade the game. I can understand Multiplayer a bit but single player isn't nice.

lol....I know some have touched on this already, I was thinking this when I started reading this thread and seeing previous posts.

Oh, so you're okay with this precedent of downgrading a game significantly via patch after everyone has already purchased it?

I've played games that look worse then GTA V does now and still enjoy the game, and unless they turn entire areas into flat textures, I'm not so sure anyone will complain besides people who are looking too in-depth into it.

So, word is Rockstar just release 1.09 which has set out to fix these issues from 1.08... Can anybody who updated to 1.09 confirm?

FYI, while the update says 4.7GB, it's not anywhere near that. 4.7 was the heists update and this seems to be bundled into that update.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt that the vehicle damage is a bug. I wouldn't care so much about graphical downgrades in GTA Online, but I wouldn't want graphical downgrades in GTA V SP which mostly ran fine for me. GTA Online has definitely had times when the game ran really slow, and so if the graphical downgrades (as minor as these are) fix those issues then I'm fine with that. As long as GTA V SP looks as good as it did at launch.

Random reactions from twitter from people who downloaded it:

PS4 firmware update 2.50 also helped neutralise loading lag on GTA V 1.08 with the 1.09 update fixing the loading speed as well. All good!

I was updating the PS4 firmware and it started downloading 1.08 and as soon as it installed it 1.09 downloaded, it was a tiny update. Can't really give you feedback though as I didn't get the chance to see it with 1.08.

Funny you say that, im actually primarily a PC player, and for me i just turn 1 or 2 settings down to get my constant 60fps, you know just like R* have done to get a consistent experience on the consoles.

But yes last gen GTA V judder was insane.

Still hearing reports of slowdowns so I can't be sure that they have created a "consistent experience on console" even after butchering what made this version great.

So lemme guess, you find the most demanding parts of the game and make sure that you don't go below 60fps in those areas correct. Just making sure you actually sacrifice visuals for the whole game just so the framerate never dips below 60. OTOH if you are saying you Target 60 fps for lets say 85%-90% of the time how is that different from how GTA V was at 30fps?

It didn't though, there were constant framedrops, especially in high traffic

That is an overexaggeration. As I quoted before

An initial hour-long play-test, for example, flags no substantial dips on either console, and only the odd dropped frame interrupts a usually perfect 30fps line. It's a solid performer regardless of which flag you fly. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-grand-theft-auto-5-ps4-xbox-one-face-off

Were/are there framedrops? Yes. Can they be substantial? In certain cases/areas, yes. Are they constant? No.

(Note: Xbox One Version pre-patch)

How do you know?

How do I know they toned down various graphical settings? It's in the video. Go watch it.

They toned down the vehicle damage
They toned down Anisotropic Filtering
They turned off Parallax Occlusion
etc

They did these to further stabilize the frame rate, which is just an abomination. Give players the choice. Don't false advertise your game to sucker gamers into getting this port and then take away the things that made this port sell in the first place. This is just stupid.

I noticed it at the beginning of the game when driving the supercars with all those scripted traffic scenes, and at night time in high traffic, I'm guessing it was due to the reflections and shadows. Maybe constant is a little harsh but i noticed it quite frequently when I played, not huge drops but there was stutter.

Hmm, I'm only really bothered by the decreased vehicle damage. Everything else I'm fine with as long as it improves frame rate.

I'd gladly take a 1-2 FPS hit for better vehicle damage though. :/

According to GTAForums the 1.09 patch fixed the vehicle damage but parallax occlusion is still missing.

There is a god. I can live without Parallax Occlusion because I'm not likely to notice while in motion.

Acting like this was all some deliberate 'ploy' to trick people into buying this game with evil plans to bait and switch 5 months later is......well....I hope you don't actually believe that's how it went down. They were probably just looking at ways they could improve performance(assuming it's not just a bug or oversight, which it very well could still be). The game is still a vast improvement even without POM. Don't act like it suddenly looks like the last gen version again.

PS4 version had an issue with fps dipping to around 23fps while driving and stays below 30fps for a long time especially in traffic.

I continue to think they haven't intentionally downgrade such stuff, not at least for the sp campaign. Game not run that bad initially, not has sense that massive step back. Maybe they want to cut back some stuff for the new online mode to avoid fps issues but it affect the whole game.

Let's get one thing clear here: before the downgrade the framerate in single-player was perfectly fine and stayed at 30fps 95% of the time. And it did so while having all of these great graphical bells and whistles.

I can understand a downgrade for online, but single-player needs to stay the same. Otherwise it's just bullshit from a consumer-relations standpoint.

If it's the one that came out this morning, then no. At least as far as the POM is concerned, I never noticed any issues with AF or whatever else people are complaining about.

That video had no real evidence for AF changes, the screenshot for the "lower" AF was blurry everywhere, even the edges and geometry. They are doing something wrong, either on purpose or they are idiots.

because GTA V's current situation is totally applicable to situations where that argument usually crops up right

the game didn't release looking like this and the performance gains aren't quite significant enough to justify dialing back visuals to this degree. Consider context - around here, one of the most talked about elements of GTA V on next gen was its staggering visuals for an open world game (with screenshots shared left and right), and how even though it had clear cross gen roots it was a marked improvement from the experience of playing it on PS3 and 360. these tweaks bring it quite a bit closer to the last-gen look for nearby scenery especially, and to do that months in after people already bought the game and have expectations as to how it looks... that ain't right imo.

It is.

Even if a game drops to 25-26 fps during very brief and infrequent times, people start up with the:

"Pathetic" "Lazy" "unplayable" "unoptimized garbage" rhetoric.

Naturally, to alleviate some of the framerate issues, it makes sense to downgrade some of the cosmetic features of the game.

But when the happens, we get meltdowns, too.

Consumers have come to expect mind blowing, expensive visuals from their games. And that often comes at the expense of a frame rate.
Games coming out with shitty frame rates is no coincidence. It's because developers think we don't mind frame drops in the name of graphical fidelity.
And we can sort of see why.

I noticed increased stability in GTA 5. I'm completely fine with a visual downgrade to achieve that.

I play my games rather than obsessively stare at gravel shadows or at what exact distance the road becomes blurry, so for me frame rate is WAY higher on the list. I wouldn't necessarily call it a down-grade, more like a side-grade since the game itself had some performance issues. I think Rockstar tried to strike the best balance they could given the power of the system.

Sounds like the old Far Cry 4 God ray fiasco. Hopefully they patch the rest soon

I don't think there was evidence to suggest that it was patched out to fix the frame rate.
They were patched back in.

The God Ray fiasco was comparable to how the PS4/XB3 version of GTA 5 was missing wind effects on trees. It was eventually patched back in and just seemed to be a weird bug.

I guess that part is subjective. To me they were fine, and nowhere near bad enough to warrant a permanent degradation of certain graphical effects.

I am guessing from your picture you played the PS4 version? I have no experience with that one so maybe the Xbox is worse but it was definitely off-putting, especially at high speeds with fast cars.

I don't want to buy a Gaming-PC, but developers really making it hard for me. At least I can still enjoy the Games With Gold games on Xbox 360 until I make a decision.

I own the PS4 version, and I can tell you that I had a similar experience to yours. Those frame drops and stutters at high speeds in the city were quite bad in my opinion. It is so much better now.

If removal of POM facilitated this, then i feel it was a worthy trade. I have my doubts about this however. It just doesn't seem like POM would be the culprit behind that very specific situation in which those big drops occurred. I would have guessed it was an issue with streaming. Perhaps this is just a bug, just as the static foliage and car deformations were before .

So has this notably improved the mid town framerate on PS4?

Yeah, the framerate has been noticeably improved in this patch.

Yeah, I'm not seeing evidence of a AF change but its a blurry YT video.

I compared a few sections side by side where he runs back and forth and just can't see it. The video then jumps to a zoomed in still shot comparison but it just looks closer. I compared the beach and aside from the missing POM the AF looks the same.

Anyway, seems more like some bugs. I expect POM to return

This is probably like when the god rays were removed from Far Cry 4. Still, weird that someone toggled the 'remove all POM' button and no one noticed or noone had time to click the toggle back on. (yes, I know it wasn't a toggle, but I really wonder why this happened)
