NetherRealm producer quits twitter after threats to family

Honestly I think everyone should quit using Twitter. Twitter has been unable and/or unwilling to step in and do something about the horrible users that they have.

I wish Twitter would do something about all the abusers. I'd love to see a story where someone gets arrested for threat on Twitter.

"However I cannot deal with the threats of violence to my wife and now young daughter. Threats of sexual violence are even more disturbing"

Wow, that's pathetic. And actionable, if he was in the UK.

Wow.

Twitter really need to cut the bullshit and be more vigilant against this shit even if it means requiring a phone number or something to be viewable by anyone but your friends.

At least the Twitter CEO seems aware and ashamed of what is allowed.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo admitting in February that the platforms “sucks at dealing with abuse and trolls”, a fact he said he was “ashamed” of.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/twit...-sucks-at-dealing-with-abusive-trolls/0144769

“We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we've sucked at it for years,” Dick Costolo said, as reported by The Verge. “It's no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day.

“I'm frankly ashamed of how poorly we've dealt with this issue during my tenure as CEO. It's absurd. There's no excuse for it. I take full responsibility for not being more aggressive on this front. It's nobody else's fault but mine, and it's embarrassing.

“We're going to start kicking these people off right and left and making sure that when they issue their ridiculous attacks, nobody hears them. Everybody on the leadership team knows this is vital.

“So now we're going to fix it, and I'm going to take full responsibility for making sure that the people working night and day on this have the resources they need to address the issue, that there are clear lines of responsibility and accountability, and that we don't equivocate in our decisions and choices.”

I love Twitter, it's a brief, concise way to get a thought or experience across, but it's unfortunately abused way too often by people who either speak before they think or are just genuinely mentally unstable.

They really need this, yeah, something in place to reign in the threats and crazies.

Twitter should hire Curt Schilling to handle these people. What he did to the idiots who abused his daughter on Twitter was a thing of beauty.

Some video game had it where abusers/hackers/etc got pushed from public servers and into a server just with them. It is a brilliant idea. If you abuse on Twitter, you can only tweet to other a-holes. Ha ha.

Twitter is behind the game.
I believe China, Korea, and JP require you to use their country SSN or cellphone # to create a fricken social/online account.

I don't know why Twitter isn't doing this as well to stop the harassment.
The CEO and CTO are acting like outdated adults.

But here's the thing, twitter doesn't make these people horrible, it only makes them more visible. These people were already fucked up before twitter existed and even if they're banned or it disappears, they'll still be fucked up

Yeah, imagine how big a privacy stink people would throw if that was ever a thing in the US. It's not really as feasible...

Like facebook, twitter is useless. No idea why its so popular, but it does tend to attract weirdos and crazy people, not to mention people saying dumb stuff only to get fired from their job. Its pretty sad.

Hang on, I speak CEO:

"Let me talk very assertively and humbly so that you all really believe that change might be coming.

"I want you to think, if possible, that it's coming SOON. If you think it's coming soon, then you won't get any big ideas about trying to start a Twitter rival that has a way more strict stance on threats, stalking, trolling, and bullying. Starting a competitor would be taking on an impossible task anyway, but if you think you know where our weak spot is, it might get you a leg up. We don't want you to think you can have legs.

"So fall back, you non-leg-having motherfuckers. I've got reports to ignore."

Twitter's general outright refusal to do anything about stuff like this is insane and disgusting. They fully endorse this behavior. Period. That's what their refusal says to me.

You think people would learn by now to stop using twitter to avoid these kinds of things

That's kinda like telling women to avoid going to bars because they might get assaulted. If the answer to the problem is to allow the abuse to continue, you haven't actually addressed the problem.

It already happened. Some months ago, a teen girl from the Netherlands was making terrorist threats to an airline's twitter, and the police went to her home and arrested her.

The police/FBI should hunt down all these harassers.

Terrible.
It is for the best, I found if you have any fame ... do not use Twitter.

It is sad that this is probably one of the best options available.
Twitter really needs to address the issues with abusive and threatening tweets, but I have little faith in them caring...

It would be nice having a medium where a content creator can interact with fans, but either A) content creator spouts stupid stuff, fans get mad or B) fans are terrible people threatening content creators without any punishment.
Twitter and Facebook both have terrible policies in place.

For now, conventions have to be the way to go because if you threaten the guests, you get escorted out and not let back in.

This x100. I don't know why anyone uses this piece of shit or any other social media. My wife was using instagram like crazy and all it turned into was a bunch of people catcalling her and criticizing her parenting. I stopped with all that crap years ago and wish it would just die already.

Twitter is useless to those who are using it for no gain. If you are looking to promote something (ex: products, articles, videos, etc, etc) it serves it purpose.

On topic: Moderation on Twitter doesn't even really exist. It takes forever for an account to be suspended/closed due to harassment/death threats.

Shame smh.

What gaming companies/studios need to do is use social media purely as a news feed (one way communication) and if fans want to interact with staff, direct them towards the companies/developers own moderated forums where they don't have to take that kind of nonsense. Also, take a page from NeoGAF's book and make it hard as shit to get an account so they'll weed out some of the trolls and the rest that do get through will be on their best behavior.

But he's not a woman.

Seriously awful stuff it reinforces my conviction not to use Twitter. Hope the people get caught and the guy doesn't have any lasting damage form this.

It's more like not going to a specific bar where you know the owners won't care if you get assaulted. At some point you would just go to another bar (Or in this case, a social media site where there is better moderation) where you know someone actually might give a shit about your safety and you aren't supporting a bunch of assholes who don't do anything about the problems at their bar. The people at Twitter know about the problem and haven't addressed it.

Where does the buck stop? It doesn't stop with the CEO? This collective culpability will only go so far. You want to take credit for the success, you gotta take responsibility for the failure.

It's been almost two months, what's the status of this plan of action?

In the last seven months have been pretty large changes to how the block function works, they're test-ballooning automatic detection and blocking of offensive messages, it's easier to manage blocking, you can voluntarily view tweets by users you've blocked in order to report them, reporting has been streamlined and response times have improved, they have a tutorial on how to block people, they've started working with external anti-harassment groups to crowdsource harassment moderation.

I mean, it still sucks, but it's obviously something they're at least moving on.

Privacy?
I hate when people use this as an excuse.
For the greater good, you have to sacrifice some information about yourself.

And let's be honest, majority of the people open their social media account to public anyway.
They don't care about privacy.
I can find a random person, and pretend to be them
I can go to FB right now, and 'steal' random pictures and create a life that mirrors the real person and send friend request to their real friend.
Privacy is dead in the social media world.

Depending on the code base, and the backlog of other internal issues and tasks being worked on. It could be years before they properly turn things around.

2 months can be no time at all for some tasks. Especially if it requires rewriting infrastructure code. Plus there may be tons of legal preparation needed to explore if some solutions are possible. Don't expect them to be transparent over entirely transient operations.
