Man, I really miss GEARS

I loved 1 & 2. Horde mode was amazing.

The third one was boring and kind of just burned me out to the whole thing, which is a shame because I loved Bulletstorm and I believe the same team worked on Judgement but I really just don't have any more interest in Gears beyond a remaster of the first couple games.

Me also man

Hopefully some good news from E3

It's really been too long without my daily gears fix!!!

I'm hoping for weekly podcasts again after e3

I'm certain there will be gears 3 on xbox 1 as all the servers have gone so hopefully that's to migrate them over!!

Please let me see canals back

I loved the first one, the second was straight trash and the third one was pretty good. I never played Judgment, it didn't look like it was worth even trying out. I'll be buying the Phoenix Collection if there is one, though.

I have such good Christmas memories of Gears 1 and 2 with my brother. Gears 3 came out right when I got married and bought it when we came back from our honeymoon. Lots of great great memories associated with this series.

Seems relevent. Cogs of War used to give me a good laugh. NSFW by the way.

Dom Legit killed Maria because she wasn't gorgeous anymore. During that entire scene I had the "I'm not quite dead yet" quote running through my head. Dom was like:

"Maria...Jesus fuck what are you now? Marcus, Maria isn't gonna make it."

Marcus: "Uhhh Dom, she's alive."

Dom: "Marcus she isn't gonna make it. What have they done to you?!"

Maria: "I'm not dead. I'm actually really hungry. Please get me out of here."

Dom: "Fuck, she's suffering."

Marcus: "It's time to let Maria go, you know what to do."

Maria: "What are you doing? I'm just dehydrated."

Dom: "Goodnight, Maria.... *blam* MARIAAAAAAAAAA."

Best part is that he thought adding that comment was worth an edit.

Maybe he felt the need to emphasize that he doesn't have an Xbone. lol

Back on topic I totally agree that Gears is a great series (excluding the shitty Gears 2), can't wait for Gears 4...
a Gears 1 remake for the 10th year anniversary next year will be awesome as well. :p

I'm pumped for the next Gears game. No other game gives me the rush that Gears multiplayer gives me. So many moments online that make you feel like a badass. Almost all other multiplayer games completely miss the point and turn in to, kill, die, respawn, kill, die, respawn. Gears is very rewarding in that aspect for me.

Judgement was so bad that it's made it much easier for me personally to 'let go' of this franchise (If need be) despite loving the original trilogy of games.

Seriously hard to get my hard around what went wrong with Judgement. It was made by an Epic owned studio so presumably there would have been close communication going on between the devs of the original game and PCF if they'd just been handed Epic's big money maker series at the time, yet the end result was appalling, with a campaign that was some straight up Unreal Tournament 3 level shit.

Will certainly be interesting if nothing else to see what a studio that has nothing to do with Epic who basically had the franchise dropped on them by their bosses ends up doing with it.

You didn't assume that a thread about GoW would have spoilers for GoW?

GoW 3 is nearly 4 years old.

Some people really.

I usually assume threads with unmarked spoilers in them will have 'unmarked spoilers' in the thread title, seeing as, y'know... most threads that have them seem to.

But yeah, the unmitigated gall of some people etc

It's like you've never been on the internet before.

Here's some tips for your first day, if a topic being talked about is something you don't want ruined for you / might have spoilers, don't enter it then. Really just common sense.

Also most things are free to be talked about without using spoilers after a year or two, seeing as the last main game came out nearly four years ago, I'd say you're shit outta luck.

Now excuse me while I go whine about spoilers in a thread for a game I've not played / have no intention of playing.

Judgment got rid of all the things that made Gears the great and unique experience that it was and turned it into a generic TPS. It was a kick to the crotch for anyone who put an embarrassing amount of hours into the series up til then. It was exactly what everyone expected it would be, a cash-in trying to appeal to the general masses. So once the masses move on to the next game a month later you're left with this smelly skidmark permanently stained on the series.

I heard the campaign was actually a lot of fun though. Looking forward to playing that.

I have high hopes for Gears 4 though now that Rod is back at the helm.

The trilogy remaster is coming, it has to. Considering how many big PS3 titles are coming to PS4, rumored Uncharted trilogy coming to PS4. Microsoft has to release this.

What other 360 exclusives could be remastered?

I ask again: is Judgement really that bad?

It's got about 80 on Metacritic, which is a totally good score. Heck, Dying Light scored lower than that and up till now, DL is probably my GotY (Bloodborne quickly overtaking it, though).

Considering how hard I found Gears 3 to swallow, I'd like to give Judgement a go in co-op. I just couldn't face Gears 3 after that night-time fort-defence level. It was just so dull. So dull.

The only thing I miss is the amazing Gears 1 MP. They completely lost the series after 1. Got worse with every entry.
Man it wasn't as great as you remember

When you got through playing gears 2&3 heavily and go back to gears 1 you realize how rough that game was, clunky and you stick to everything

Amazing time and I also thought gears 1 was the best till i went back to it years later

Those maps though!! Still the best :)

Alan Wake and Lost Odyssey.

Ha, yes

The campaign is supposed to be great. The multiplayer is what most hardcore Gears fans hated. Seeing as how the multiplayer is typically more of an afterthought in reviews I'm not surprised the metacritic is that high.

A new Gears (and Scalebound) are the things in the horizon that could really make me want an XB1.

I ask again: is Judgement really that bad?

Probably depends on whether you care more about the campaign, or multiplayer. Gears threads tend to have everyone throwing around rankings of the games in the series, without specifying which of the two they're basing most of their judgement on. If you're multi-player focused, you'll tend to have different opinions of the games than someone that cares mostly about campaign/co-op.

A friend and I have played every other Gears together, so we're going to do the Judgment campaign too. (That the game is free with Gold right now makes that an easy choice.) I'm expecting the campaign to be little more than a basic sequence of Gears scenarios – not up to the standard of the main games – but that should be more than enough for some fun co-op.

I ask again: is Judgement really that bad?

For me, the campaign had lower highs but better lows, its very consistent and I did really enjoy it, I find it difficult to work out where I would place it in terms of which one I think is best, it has 4 player co-op, I didn't like the forced aspect of the campaign scoring/arcade stuff though, the Aftermath campaign is good too.

Overrun is legit great, 10000x better than Beast mode and I really hope they keep it for Gears 4. Survival wasn't great iirc and the main multiplayer component was not liked at all and I get why.

Its probably the worst of the 4 overall, 1 has the spectacle of being the first, the darker tone etc, 2 introduced Horde mode, it really was bigger better and more badass overall, but 3 was such an incredible refinement imo of the first two and added 4 player co-op, big Horde improvements/multiplayer improvements etc.

Its not terrible, its not the best Gears games at all but when you have a bar so high and make the mistakes they did, it will undoubtedly get called out for it and rightly so.

Ha, yes

Judgment wasn't that bad, no.

They made a lot of very minor tweaks, that by themselves weren't too big of a deal, but in aggregate turned off a lot of long time fans.

Changing the competitive modes to COG vs COG instead of keeping it COG vs Horde was a bad look in my book, but a lot of the other things they did were actually fun and refreshed the formula.

I really enjoyed the Overrun mode where you could play as different classes of Horde. The campaign was basically Arcade Mode from Gears 3 with optional modifiers to change things up each time you played if you wanted to. The other neat thing they did was make it more roguelike where every time you play a campaign level, the enemies were NOT scripted. So no two playthroughs are exactly alike.

Gears was my favourite franchise last gen but I still think that the original was the best.
Hopefully Gears 4 goes back to basics and looks to the original for inspiration.

I really enjoyed the first 3 and played the crap out of them. My question is why does every franchise need a new entry? I felt the medals and story were lacking in Judgement and now we are getting a new installment. When will we leave well enough alone? I feel like there are game devs out there that are very talented, so why try to breathe life into an old beloved franchise?

Well I'll tell you why... $$easy money$$

I just wish gaming was still about the love of the art form and not a competition to be the next AAA blockbuster.

I haven't played Gears since 3 was a few weeks old. I dabbled in Judgement for as long as I could stomach it, i.e. a couple of hours. For a long time now I've had the itch to back and play through the trilogy. There was the rumor of a remaster, so I stayed my hand... but now that apparently that isn't happening any time soon I guess nothing's stopping me. Will hopefully start this weekend.

Oh man, it really hurts to see that people already "miss" game series where the last entry is just 2 years old - that's quite a small gap so far. Don't get invested with Banjo, Shenmue or Crash Bandicoot ;).

Gears 3 MP was one of the greatest and most under appreciated TPS' of all-time.

Need it back in my life.

GOW1 was great too but p2p ruined it.

Its really hard to beat Gears gameplay on dedicated servers.

They never could top the first one. I went from being a huge fan to not caring about the franchise at all. I don't think I would have any interest in a new Gears game.

I especially miss the multiplayer from the first game. Gameplay aside, player hosted servers and no private chat on Xbox Live at the time made for a great social experience.

I agree 100% OP. It was the only reason why I had an Xbox 360, and the only reason I kept on paying for Live. It will be the main reason why I get an X1, also. Yes, there are other good games on the system, but Gears is a system seller for me.

Next gen graphics, next gen gameplay, truly next gen in almost every way when it first came out. If my Elite model 360 wasn't so old, I'd love to play them all again, but I'm afraid of it crapping out midway through, then I'd *have* to buy a 360 to play them again. If I don't...then I can at least believe I can still play them any time..

Edit:

The only thing I hate about Gears (not it's fault) was the Party Chat. Not blocking it out killed the in game chat. Minor complaint for one of my most favorite game franchises ever. Oh, and also, GoW1-3 or bust....Judgement just doesn't feel the same.

I love this series to death. The MP is addicting and wallbouncing around is sooo satisfying especially when you close in the gap with a shotgun to your enemies face. Can't wait for the next one.

I always wonder how many people who say Gears 1 was the best have played it a lot after 2 and 3. I played it after playing countless hours of 3 and just gave up as it felt so clunky in comparison.

Just wondering if it is nostalgia talking or not.

I feel the same - I loved all of the games but 3 was the best IMO. Until Judgement, the series just kept fixing problems and refining gameplay.
