GTA V PC Performance Thread

Huh, I'd totally forgotten that my video card was only 2GB. Right now I have a choice between playing my PS4 copy with great textures and 30fps, or the PC version with ass textures and 60fps. Hmm.

How to get triple buffered-VSYNC in this game? Borderless window mode + vsync on?

Getting some crazy stuttering while running over 60fps, so vsync in some way is a must.

Anyone tried 4K with a single 970? Naturally I'm not expecting to max it out or something but I'm interested if you could push 4k60 with some toned down settings as the game seems to be fairly scalable.

This game has absolutely fantastic SLi scaling. My 2x980s are handling everything maxxed at 1440p, 2xMSAA, 2x shadow MSAA, TXAA, and Softest shadows + everything else (desnsity, etc) maxed and pumping 60-70 FPS driving and 75-100 FPS on foot on my 120hz 1440p Korean monitor.

It's a thing of beauty. I wish all PC games got this level of care and polish. Good going, Rockstar.

Yeah it is doing some incredible scaling, I am very impressed.

I thought you only had 2 TitanXs? That doesn't make any sense. With just a single TitanX, 2560x1440 with 2xMSAA hovers between 60-70. 4K drops to 40-45. But you're getting more than double that performance with 4xMSAA. Can't be that the CPU is making that much difference....

Maybe I gotta do a fresh driver install and see if that helps.

Ok so I was getting those numbers with Precision X. I had FRAPS run in the background during my last playtime. Precision is definitely off:
gnzZXEO.png

I got these numbers with the following settings:

Resolution - 4k

FXAA Off
MSAA 4x
TXAA ON

Population Density - Max
Population Variety - Max
Distance Scaling - Max

Texture Quality - Very High
Shader Quality - Very High
Shadow Quality - Very High
Reflection Quality - Very High
Reflection MSAA - 8x

Water Quality - Very High
Particles Quality - Very High
Grass - Ultra
Soft Shadows - NVIDIA PCSS
Post FX - Ultra
AF - 16x
Ambient Occlusion - High
Tessellation - Very High

Long Shadows - On
High Resolution Shadows - On

Extended Distance Scaling - On
Extended Shadows Distance - On

I tried taking some screen shots, but for some reason I can't with either FRAPS or Precision. These numbers are with stock clocks on the Titan X's. If I applied one of my OC profiles, I'm confident I could hit 60fps.

Or if I simply dropped 4x MSAA to 2x or turned it off and put FXAA on I'd for sure get 60fps.

Can you post some Youtube video at 1080p60 ? I'll watch it using my lowly PeasantStation 4 and its Youtube App

:D

Will try and capture some tomorrow. I spent the majority of my evening troubleshooting and then waiting for 60GB to redownload, so I'm a bit tired.

So apparently, the game won't load for me anymore. I was able to complete the beginning part then exited the game to try steam streaming. Now the launcher just keeps crashing. I already tried running it as an admin and even tried disabling the display driver but the gta 5 launcher just refuses to run again :(

Sorry if this has been asked, but how do people get the 60Hhz option to appear?

I'm playing through my Sony KDL60W850B and the highest it shows is 59Hz..

Make sure your refresh rate is set to 60hz in Windows.

Right-click on the Desktop -> Screen resolution -> Advanced Settings -> Monitor, and change the value from there.

Also, check what the refresh rate is set to in your GPU's control panel. Windows reports my monitor as running at 59hz, but NVIDIA Control Panel says 60hz.

I did some research with the same thing the other day and apparently Windows keeps it locked at 59hz even if you set it to 60hz for compatibility with other programs. This generally happens with televisions and not computer monitors. In my eyes, it's not a huge deal as the difference of 1 frame is nothing major.

In fact, I believe Windows stores an actual value of 59.94Hz, which is inline with 60FPS such as videos, which are filmed at 59.94 frames as opposed to a flat 60.

I feel really stupid not knowing how, but how do I run the benchmark for this? I am not seeing it anywhere.

Normal textures often look really bad. Worse than I remember of the 360 version. I feel like there should be another option between that and high that doesn't require 700mb more.

I have a single 980 FTW, and with a few settings toned down and no AA I was getting pretty solid 45fps at 4k. Was amazed tbh

Alright, I think I've found my sweet spot for settings already.

3570k@4.2Ghz
MSI GTX970(factory stock)
8GB DDR3
Windows 7
1080p monitor

First things, some settings I'd recommend for those who can afford it:

- FXAA is probably what most people will use without a higher end setup, but even at 1440p, the aliasing was just not very nice, with that gross dithering everywhere. MSAA makes a huge difference here. Even just MSAAx2(I've got MFAA turned on as well, which probably helps) mostly gets rid of the dithering and dramatically reduces aliasing. It costs a fair bit of performance and I had to turn down the resolution to 1183p, but that with MSAAx2 was highly preferable to 1440p w/FXAA. I might even check out 1080p with MSAAx4 next.

- High Resolution Shadows makes a big difference. It's the only Advanced Graphics setting I have turned on, but it totally gets rid of all the crappy shadows everywhere, especially the powerline shadows that look like dotted lines all over the place. Again, costs performance, but I think it makes a really worthwhile improvement.

I'm only using regular soft shadows, I've got no motion blur, shadow quality on high, no reflection MSAA, but everything else in the regular graphics options maxed.

This all gets me a really decent looking image at a pretty consistent 60fps, even in the city, which definitely does hit performance hard.

I'll take some comparison shots here soon.

Yeah, I have a great CPU but my old GPU is absolutely limiting my rig. This 2GB 7850 doesn't do an i7 justice, I can't even run the textures on High, they exceed my VRAM by 100MB...
MSAA destroys performance, and although I have to set some settings on Normal, I can get 60fps @ 1080p most of the time with others on High or Very High.

Seriously, AMD, hurry up with your new GPUs, what the hell...

This port is blowing my mind with how smooth it is. The delays were certainly worth it. Haven't had a single crash or any issue at all.

Lower population variety. It eats VRAM. I set it at 50 percent and with Very High textures, and the rest almost maxed out, I am doing 2027/2047 MB VRAM on my 680.

Game still keeps freezing on certain missions. Still can't do online either because the car falls through the textures at the same spot and the credits stops at the animation director. Bummer, can't do anything anymore.

Really impressed with the performance of this port from my short time with it. After a little more testing tomorrow I can finally sit down and play the game in it's proper form. I started it on 360 and X1, but eventually put it down knowing that this version was coming. It is absolutely a looker at max settings. Incredible performance and the SLI scaling is top notch. Hats off to R* and Nvidia for making that happen day 1.

Need to hook up my DS4 tomorrow. Not feeling the driving sections with KB/M.

16gb, 4770K, and 780ti locked at 60fps with only a few drops on very high to high.

Looks and plays fantastic. Really liking the mouse aiming after playing the consoles.

Most people here seem to have a 970 or better card and the few posts i saw so far of people who have 2GB cards even report worse textures than the ....360/PS3 version??

Is this true?

Any tips on what eats up most VRAM except textures? Will i be able to at least use high quality if i play at 720p?

I have a GTX 960 GPU

The "normal" texture setting is ugly and is what people with lower cards seem to be using. As Etta pointed out though you can keep higher textures by sacrificing things like population variety.

I tried running in safe mode after my last freeze. Only thing I did was put the resolution back to 1080P, and ya, the game looks like ass on lowest settings.

Urgh.

Wonder if it's even worth getting this version since I have an iMac. I wouldn't mind playing on low but it sounds like s 2GB 775m is really pushing it.

Thanks. Is there a in between setting for the textures? For the sake of choice. And if yes, how does it look?

There is Normal, High, and Very High. Not sure what you mean. I have my population variety at 50%, and textures at very high, and they look great. The AF is also buggy though, when you first boot up the game, even though it is set to 16X, the game does not recognize that. You have to change to 8X, save, then change back to 16X.

I have a 2GB GTX 680 and I'm able to run Very High textures without issue. Yeah, it says it's over max VRAM, but it still lets me choose it and I haven't had a single issue with hitching or stuttering that you'd normally see from maxed out VRAM texture swapping. It doesn't seem to be swapping in lower textures; I played through the first chapter with recommended settings and couldn't get past how muddy everything looked. Now things are quite crisp and detailed. I don't really know what's up; is the game just overestimating how much VRAM usage you'll actually see with maxed out textures? Or can I expect issues at some point down the road, even if I haven't hit it yet?

Intel Pentium G3258 @ 3.2Ghz
AMD Radeon R9 270
8GB DDR3 RAM

I've been playing it with the mostly default settings (I changed the resolution to my monitor's native 1680x1050; FXAA only, Vsync on, soft shadows off, Normal Textures), and it's quite playable, with some periodic framedrops while driving.

So no problems with using a dual core CPU? I mean, nothing game breaking, just some performance hiccups?

How much in the way of fps? At least stable at or above 30 fps?

This has probably been answered before but is it known what equivalent settings the ps4 runs at?

I want to grab this but if my rig isn't gonna be able to make it look and play better than my ps4 version I'm gonna have to think much harder about purchasing

I am guessing I'll be able to run it on high.

Performance is absolutely insane. I've personally never seen an open world game of this scope run this well and look this good. Even on my middle-of-the-road 2 GB GTX 770 I'm pulling a constant 60 FPS from beginning through to the end of Franklin's first mission and some nighttime driving.

I trashed R* for delaying the PC version twice, but I'm happy to eat crow. This is by far R*'s best PC effort to date. If only they would've left modding alone, but alas, with Online GTA it wasn't meant to be :(

Yes, for those of you with a 2 GB card like me, lower pop. variety and a couple of other things to keep your 60 while getting high/very high textures. You CAN and absolutely should play with Textures above Normal, as that default setting has ugly-ass textures.

Game looks insane at absolutely max settings.

Code:
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (6.2, Build 9200)
DX Feature Level: 11.0
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3930K CPU @ 3.20GHz (12 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
65536MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980, 4071MB, Driver Version 350.12
Graphics Card Vendor Id 0x10de with Device ID 0x13c0

CPU is actually OC'd to 4Ghz.

Crushes my system though.

Code:
Frames Per Second (Higher is better) Min, Max, Avg
Pass 0, 23.863594, 67.281525, 45.835091
Pass 1, 19.776409, 42.877789, 27.954981
Pass 2, 22.536249, 144.588654, 44.193604
Pass 3, 22.931469, 85.552666, 47.649090
Pass 4, 5.458716, 144.882721, 42.365742

Using GeForce Experience Optimal:
Code:
Frames Per Second (Higher is better) Min, Max, Avg
Pass 0, 27.279480, 76.738525, 60.037552
Pass 1, 24.799698, 79.687111, 47.040897
Pass 2, 30.496918, 108.220184, 64.064629
Pass 3, 22.336733, 111.394318, 68.908630
Pass 4, 23.531292, 150.331573, 58.097271

Don't make me SLI. I'm sure it's gorgeous in 4K too. I'm playing at 1080p FWIW. I'm not a controller fan for FPS type stuff, or aiming weapons either. But I prefer it otherwise. Not completely settled on KB+M vs Controller.

Pretty cool, thanks! My rig is almost the same, but I am rocking a non oced 3770k@3,5 instead.

Can you max everything @1080p/60fps with MSAAx2, or would you have dips?

rest of your rig and settings?

that's a bit of a stretch at least for me with a 680, which isnt THAT different

I get 60 fine walking around and such, but get 3 stars on ya driving and it gets messy

Last batch for me tonight. Countryside, draw distance, and night time.

Countryside does hit the frame rate into the lower 40's but more than playable. Game looks phenomenal in motion. Could push more settings but I do enjoy 60fps most of the time.

As noted, these are 1440p with maxed settings minus 2xMSAA since it eats up more VRAM with 4x.

Mine shows up as 8GB, uses every bit of it so that's why I turn MSAA to x2.

Those are some of the best environments I have ever seen in a video game. The character models are so shitty in comparison though.

Don't know about maxing absolutely everything. Haven't tried it and I probably wont bother. Certain things I really just don't care about enough. I'd be surprised if I could with all the advanced settings, though. There's some pretty costly stuff here.

So this game uses MSAA. I thought it is incompatible with deferred renderers?
It's not incompatible, it just means it will cost more in performance.

I'd still recommend giving it a look if you've got a good GPU.

lol, why does the benchmark start the game? :D

Instead of benchmark it started with initial cutscene of the game, then cut to the city view (benchmark), then back to cutscene, then again to canyon view where plane flies beneath the bridge, and then....

"MISSION FAILED: you left your crew behind"

during the benchmark. It stopped and I had to quit the game.

Also, does anyone else have massive stuttering and frame drops when aiming?
