What Does Sony Have For The Holidays?

These doom and gloom conversations are getting ridiculous. When there's not one on the front page for Sony or Nintendo it then flows through the NPD threads.

I'd be in the dick
No official source, but it's rumored so heavily that people are starting to assume it's real.

When official Playstation accounts are tweeting images like this one, it seems pretty likely.

But if Sony's sales lead in the first 9-10 months is completely erased in the holidays, don't you think there's a problem with that strategy?
Yea but Microsoft falls right back over in the next 9-10 months, don't you think there's a problem with that?

Also worldwide Microsoft never actually catches up lol.

It's not a console war thread, iits a "WTF Is Sony doing for the holidays" thread.

If they really do have Battlefront then I do think I jumped the gun. We'll know tomorrow right?

If you're comparing it directly with Microsoft, then it's in a console war frame. Not saying you're some sort of platform warrior, just that's the pit the question sits in.

Easily could have left out the Microsoft stuff to still demonstrate that the Holiday 2015 lineup from Sony is a huge question mark, with some of the long noted titles either arriving earlier (Recently Bloodborne and The Order 1886, with Until Dawn in Summer) or having little indication of being in the picture (No Man's Sky).

All they need is one solid exclusive to at least partially counter halo 5 which will hopefully be announced at E3.

But it seems like a pretty solid rhythm is starting of xbone taking the holiday season by a little bit with huge amounts of effort and ps4 taking the rest of the year by a lot with little effort.

Hopefully Microsoft is about to finally learn that development studios are far more important than IP.

MGS5 is a September release. I'm talking holidays which is mainly November + December.

Uhm....September is in the holiday season more than December (it's after Black Friday)

It's a shit strategy because the XB1 caught up with the PS4 in NA last winter, if only there was a mythical land far far away where Playstation kills it every year during the holiday season, possibly where the € is used.

No doom and gloom here.

Is that real?

Then why have Halo in there?

I kid of course but you can't discount a September release for the holiday bundles.
Take a look at November NPD http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-12-12-npd

You see Destiny in that Top 10? That was a huge September release and it didn't even chart in November.

They need more than just marketing deals this Holiday season.

They have to have some exclusives.

Even if they aren't as big as Halo.

If you're really worried about Sony you should follow sales threads. Its looking like the "pre season" lead this year will be par/greater than last year. IMO you should think about what will happen if with all these exclusives/offers Xbox comes out with this holiday, they don't erase the sales deficit then the gap will just continue expanding.

Depends on their strategy really. They might be focusing less on market share and more on units sold and margin for all we know.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

They really don't. Drop the console price and bundle some games during the holidays and they are pretty set.

When is the next GT expected?

Anyway, people put way too much faith in exclusives. Look at what COD did for the Xbox last gen. Hell, look at this gen with where the strength of third parties has been for the majority of it. People just want to go where they'll get the best, or what they are told is the best, experience. Exclusives do have a strong factor, but aren't the final word. Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3 didn't carry the Xbox One as well as that argument would have let us believe if they did.

Possible Sony Holiday Contenders:

- Alienation
- The Tomorrow Children
- The Last Guardian
- Rime
- Dragon Quest Heroes
- Persona 5
- Unannounced game

No the lead was not completely erased. More like half. And that was only in the US. Worldwide the lead grew over the holidays.

Better question is what will Microsoft do if last year's strategy doesn't work this time.

That's a lot of proof right there. I think its pretty safe to say Sony probably has the Battlefront marketing.

I'm talking about the US here where Sony can easily lose their lead.

Wait so why mention Halo
Halo 5 releases October 27th. It's practically a holiday game.

XB1 is extremely relevant to my thread and I don't see why I can't compare it to PS4 without this being a console war thread.

The only possible Uncharted level replacement would be GT7. Realistically though i think they might back No Man's Sky hard and ride the wave of third-party titles.

When is the next GT expected?

Depends how optimistic you want to be.

Holiday 2016 at the earliest if its the same gap as between GT5 and 6.
Holiday 2017 if you are realistic at tack on a year because of the next gen shift.
Or 2018 and beyond because its Polyphony Digital.

Actually I wouldn't be shocked if they have a Morpheus game. Like a 120fps VR enhanced port of GT6. Means PD can keep using the same assets for another generation and we all know how much they love doing that.

Since we knew Sony put a lot of games in the summer yesterday, its save to assume they have something in the sleeve or else they just push those game to fill the holiday gap.

Maybe Sony strategy are letting 3rd party shine in the holiday and they fill empty pre-season themselves so that gamer got new games to play all year.

Could Gran Turismo 7 make this year? I know Polyphony are incredibly slow, but maybe that could be Sony's little secret weapon. It can hold it's own sales wise with almost anything.

incredibly slow? out of 6 gt games, only 1 game took a long time to develop.

Apart from Microsoft winning their only two npd months since December 2013....
But it didn't really effect much in the big picture. This year could be different though, MS could slash prices even more. Not WW of course.

Oh yeah, there's a possibility of marketing exclusivity on The Division.

And while as likely as between a Bethesda game coming out this year to seeing The Last Guardian by TGS this year, there's also Kingdom Hearts 3 out there in the wings.
Maybe they'll do that, didn't GT5 Prologue sell really well?

Have never touched a GT title, but I thought I saw something about them saying no prologue this time.

So last holiday:

Sony had it's lead cut from ~1000K to ~500K over November/December (US numbers obviously).

This was achieved by its main competitor retailing at anything up to an effective $175 value discount (price cut + store vouchers), whereas Sony didn't drop unit price, they bundled software.

March NPD has - according to a creamy sweet gentleman - seen PS4 outsell the combined total of WiiU and Xbone. The gap at February was up to ~680K, so it could now be up to anything between 700-800K.

In Q1CY, and without a price drop.

TL:DR - in 3 months of what isn't a 'peak sales' period, PS4 has made back up to 60% of the market lead it lost in 2 months over the peak sale holiday period against an aggressively discounting competitor. There are another 6 months of 'preseason' including the release of Batman and MGSV which PS4 is lead platform for co-marketing on.

Yup, no having any pre-E3 announced big exclusives and possible co-marketing/lead platform deal with one of the biggest IPs around is going to lead to a bumpy rest of the year for Sony.

After everything Microsoft threw at Sony during the 2014 holiday, only to barely beat them, you really have to wonder what Microsoft will have to do this coming holiday?

Sony's going to have more than just a remaster this time.
