Anyone else regret buying a Wii u?

If I had bought mine at full price I'd be regretting it for sure. I actually forget sometimes that I even own one with so much time inbetween releases I'm interested in. I'll be dusting it off later this year though for Xenoblade and Fatal Frame.

I've pretty much regretted buying every console from Nintendo, Gamecube and up. At least, buying them within a year or two (before a price crash), and never learning the lesson that most of Nintendo's franchises don't appeal to me. I thought I had learned my lesson with this gen, but here I am with a Wii U for Mario Kart. Now, I do have 3D World and Bayonetta 2 (loved 3D Land and Bayo was a top fiver for me last gen), but with all the other games I have in my backlog, I didn't need a Wii U anytime soon (I'm also the guy who doesn't care about playing a game at launch).

Then again, I also regret getting a PS4 soon after launch, and I probably could've subsisted on Xbox One for a good two years (perhaps technically inferior, but MS first party games so far have appealed to me more and I don't care so much about graphical limits vs the PS4.

Don't regret it at all since I'm using it as a secondary console (next to my Xbox One).

Mario Kart 8, Mario 3D World, Smash Bros., and Donkey Kong Country alone have made me happy that I have the system.

Mario Party 10 is soooo not fun. What were they thinking?! Not even a regular mode? The car mode is bullshit. Ive played every MP except for 9... So disappointing.

(Its really beautiful though)

No regrets here. I picked one up last year as a secondary system, to play the Nintendo and few exclusive third party titles that I wanted. It doesn't get a lot of play time, but that's OK. It was worth it for the titles I was interested in.

Never bought a Wii u. the price is too high, game prices are too high, no HDD so that's extra cost to buy one. also it's underpowered and there are only handful of games i want on the system like xenoblade x, mario and zelda.

I'm at the point i think i'll pass on wii u this whole gen unless nintendo drops the price way down like 99 dollars like they did with gamecube.

Yeah, don't get me started on the price. It's pretty high for the actual hardware in the box (+$80 for ext HD & Y cable, +$50 for wired ethernet adapter, +$50 for pro controller, etc.) Nintendo not subsidizing these expenses in a monthly online services really shows in the upfront cost.

But I still feel like I get more value and potential replayability out of 1st & 2nd party WiiU games than I usually do out of most games on other consoles (including PC in a lot of cases).

It still has the best exclusives thus far for the console generation, so not really.

Awaiting the PS4 to shoot out equivalent competition soon, hopefully.

I do. I thought i would be more into smash, but i am just...not.
Bayonetta didn't do much for me.

And i don't think I have bought much else. Basically just sitting on it until Zelda

No but I regret buying a Vita.

The only thing that would make me think of regretting my purchase is that I can't fit all my games on a 64 GB card and have to resort to shuffling them between my vita and a pc since I'd rather save money for a new console than plop down a quarter of a PS4 to buy a new memory card.

Lots of good games if you know what you're looking for.

Not really, the only reason it isn't getting much use being that the upper level physics classes are killing me.

I don't regret it, as I've enjoyed a few games on it, but personally I wish Nintendo would get out of the hardware business and just make games for Sony and Microsoft, do a Sega, but be successful with it.

People have to buy the WiiU first..
But seriously WiiU is something like $420 here in Australia including a game. That's insane when I can buy a PS4 with a few games for $500. Would love one but the complaint about price is definitely real, mainly a Pc gamer and there is no shortage of good games at reasonable price.

Are you planning on buying a monster branded one or something? That pricing you have sounds more like the Wi-Fi adapter on the Xbox 360.

No, I can say that I really enjoy it! Smash, MK8, Bayo, and W101 have all been great and really justify my purchase. Although it has been neglected as of late because of Bloodborne.

I regretted buying it shortly at launch. Once the games started coming in I was glad I jumped in. I love this system.

I don't regret purchasing my Wii U last May, as it's arguable the current system with the best exclusives so far. Though atm, I only have NSMBU + NSLU, Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, and SSB; but considering I have recently decided to stop purchasing last-gen titles at P4AU, hopefully my Wii U library builds up from there.

I don't regret buying one as I enjoyed the games that I've played on it, but it just didn't get much playtime with having a PS4 and XB1 also so I sold it last week. Got almost all of the money I put into it since launch back so that helps with not having any regret. Had I only been able to sell it for cheap than it may have been a different story.

Oh, yeah checking prices I am way off. <$20 is way nicer than $50. I don't online game much so if you are like me this might actually be a $0 expense. Still kind of surprising that any console wouldn't include wired networking though?

Regardless Monster gold cables are better than regular gold cables. They have better gold bro.

Nope.

Got games out the ass for it. No time to play everything.

And I actually like how homely the console feels, lots of stuff for Nintendo to improve on in the future so I'm looking forward to how that, kinda hoping they keep going forward with their gamepad/gba/gbc concepts along with introducing new technology with their handhelds/innovating as they always have.

The problem is that those exclusives (which seem saturated in platformers) don't necessarily make up for the missing third party publishers.

SCE has also managed to release a significant first-party portfolio already. The Order: 1886, Bloodborne, Knack, Killzone, Infamous: Second Son, Infamous: First Light, Drive Club, Little Big Planet 3, MLB 14: The Show, MLB 15: The Show, The Last of Us Remaster, God of War 3 Remaster, etc.

Nope not at all. Wind Waker HD, NSMBU/NSLU, DKC:TP, Mario Kart 8, Smash 4 and Zelda U (in the future) make the console completely worth it.

I do find the console hardware, online, and account management limiting but it's to be expected from Nintendo at this point.

Game quality is of course subjective, but really the only two standouts in that list for me have been Infamous and Bloodborne. MLB's transition to next gen has been stale as hell and very disappointing on both a technical and feature set level. I won't get into the remaster thing either.

On the other hand I feel like the Wii U has had some absolutely essential games. Mario Kart 8 is perhaps the best kart racer ever with amazing DLC support. Smash 4 is the game that Brawl should have been. Bayonetta 2 is arguably the best character action game on the market.

I've always been of the opinion that yes, Nintendo's lack of third party games sucks and I could never ONLY have a Wii U, but Nintendo systems have always been awesome secondary consoles. If you have a PC or XB1/PS4, a Wii U complements it greatly by having absolutely essential, can't miss exclusive games, even to a greater extent than the Wii did. A majority of games on Gaf's own GOTY list had a ton of games on other consoles, but I'd really hate myself if I decided to skip out on those top three games we had up there.

No regrets, got hyrule, mario kart 8, zombieU so far and a number of others to pick up. It offers something different to the Sony/Microsoft consoles, both wii mote and the gamepad (although the potential is not fully realised) have unique features. also liking BC and chance to catch up on some wii classics.

Final reason is that it gets the family playing together. I have a fairly young family and my children like playing.

I love my WiiU and my Nintendo games. But I only had a wii last generation and am glad I got an xbox one. It is sad that awesome games like battlefront won't be coming to my wii u.

Nintendo's first party games are among very few on the market that are usually worth the full asking price, so I guess I don't see where you are coming from. That said, the system isn't for everyone, but I sure love mine.

those with Wii U's - how does the experience stack up against what I'm used to with Xbox/PS?

For instance: Friends list, party chat w/headset, online play, any sort of achievement system?

Pretty sure there is zero in the way of achievements (dealbreaker for me mostly) but I do remember some things you could get on the Wii that were sort of medals or trophies in Metroid Prime 3.

Anyone else bought the system just to find out that the games don't even go down in price?
Bayonetta 2 is till over 55$ dollars, same with pikmin 3 & mario kart.

Even wii games still sell for really high prices, freaking LOZ SS is still selling for 59.99 in ebay or Amazon.

Most games mentioned don't show any signs of price cut :(

And I cant even get into the w101, and returned smash due to poor controls/online play.
And I now zelda wont even come out till 2016.

The times I use the wii u is to watch movies and quick Internet :)

Just wondering if anyone is in the same boat, and what is keeping you from selling it or trading it for credit or something.

Dude, no. 3D world, mk8, windwaker, bayo, dk, 101, and smash are more than worth the investment.

Online is solid in my experience, no lag or long delays to connect. But comms/friends systems are not as good as the other current gen consoles. Wii u seems more set up to play randoms in a relatively grief free way.

It has almost none of those things, no party system, no real online chat, online play is incredibly basic and difficult to do so with friends, and no achievement system to speak of.

I got the wii u as a gift and the amount of unspoken issues with it are pretty eye opening for me in regards to their fanbase. As someone who mostly plays online I have been beyond disappointed with how mk8 and smash 4 handle themselves, shits archaic.

^^ this sucks. I was such a huge Nintendo fanboy for most of my youth - really, 1987-2007 - but I finally just said enough is enough. They need to get into the current technology and features. I gave up pretty much Nov 2007 when I bought a 360, and never looked back. I really really tried. I even stood in line for the Wii on launch day in the rain. However, just disappointment after disappointment - feeling like I was playing on a last gen, limited, SD console with the Wii. I had high hopes for Wii U but I just can't understand why they would go with the Wii U pad. I could play with the pro controller on SOME games, for an extra $50. But most 1st party, which are the ones I would be interested in, require it for game functions.

While SCE has a list of releases, few were anything above mediocrity (some of them are genuinely bad games like Knack or 1886, or had poor growth to next gen like MLB) or remasters, piqued by two solid games in BB and Infamous. This is where people will nominally talk about the strength of the WiiU's exclusive library. Throw in a few more sets of releases coming this year, and I don't see SCE or MStudios passing the WiiU's exclusive library until after the WiiU has been retired... if they even last that long.

Remasters do not make a strong library, either, imo.

The strength of the WiiU's library, ironically, comes from its unsurmountable weakness: it has no third party and Nintendo is under a heavy weight to basically provide everything for the system while under heavy scrutiny. They basically can't afford to release broken or "cinematic" games and expect their fanbases to eat it right up. SCE and MStudios don't have that weight on them, yet at least, as they have a slew of third party titles to distract from their own deficiencies, delays, or shoddy releases.

Friends list is fine.

There are some games with chat but I can't think of one that isn't really restricted off the top of my head.

Online play is fine if you have a good connection, but there are only a handful of online games.

There is no system-wide achievement system, but many games have similar systems within them.

If I had paid anywhere near the going rate for one in Australia I would be slightly disappointed maybe, but I grabbed mine during one of the many fire sales that took place, and ended up with a system and a bunch of great games (W101, ZombieU, MK8, Pikmin, Zelda:WW, NintendoLand) for less than $200.

Certainly don't regret any part of that.

If multiplat games aren't on the Wii U, they should really be able to be included in the other system's exclusives when comparing to another console. Since you cannot play them on the Wii U so they may as well be exclusive (if you're comparing buying one console to another).

Remasters not counting cuts out Wind Waker HD, and Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U. Plus all VC games. I don't think you really want to cut those out of the discussion.

And I saw the meta score on 1886, however I have friends who have played through it and liked it a lot. I don't think it's a "bad" game, just not what people were expecting.

Metroid Prime Trilogy isn't a remaster. I didn't say that Wind Waker should count, either (there are more than enough games that you don't even need to consider WWHD).

You should also read my edit with regards to missed multiplats and how that ties into the fate of the WiiU. But that has nothing to do with SCE's subpar output. And liking a game is not precluded by the game being bad, I liked Space Marine... it's still not a very good game. I liked Infinite Undiscovery... still not a game I'd go out of my way to call good (or even competent). The Order is not what I would consider a good game, there are too many bad design choices that line its run length.

You mention remaster quite a few times, pitting Wii Sports Club and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, against The Last of Us and God of War 3 is an even number of remasters.
