I like horror games so I'll recommend the few horror games available..

Silent Hill: Origins.

It's the closest game you'll get to the old Silent Hills formula (fixed camera, plot related to 1/3, etc) and it's actually quite fun AND on sale right now for $4!

Obscure: The Aftermath.

The game is quite obscure (har har) but if you love cheesy dialoge and like horror games/gameplay. This game is awesome lmao.

Just gonna mention a variety of things, not everything I'd recommend to avoid too much overlap:

Shump:
Killzone: Liberation(I think ti's on PSN)
Platformer:
The Daxter games(I think they're on PSN)
Action:
Kingdom of Paradise: 3d sword fighting game where you make your own sword style with an editor, fun as hell combat, and lots of fun traveling too.
Turn-based RPGs:
Legend of heroes trails in the sky: Fun combat system, slow start, good characters
Persona 3 Portable: you've heard the spiels on this already, I'd wager
Fate/Extra: Really unique combat system that requires planning on the players part. Overall, it's like the direct to dvd version of the persona games. Warning: no english voices.
Strategy RPGs:
Valkyria Chronicles 2: Yeah, the story is a downgrade over 1, but the additions of more classes, customization, etc. make it stand out as a great game.
Jeanne D'arc: Good looking srpg with an interesting story, nice combat system. It's not a particularly hard one either.

Edit:

Are these Battlefront games? They are on the PSN store, but not playable on Vita.

Worth noting, if you have a PS3, you can download it there and move the game to your vita from your ps3. Works for every digital game that's not directly listed on vita. Val chron 2 is one of the games you'd have to do this with.

My favorites are Growlanser 4 for more of a traditional RPG, Gungnir and Yggdra Union for SRPGs, and Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins for action/platformer.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Growlanser 4. It's technically an Srpg though, even though you can move around and travel like you do in traditional rpgs. A unique spin on SRPGs to be sure.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is one of the best games ever made. If SRPGs aren't really your thing or the learning curve puts you off, Jeanne D'Arc is a nice, simplified introduction to the genre. Doesn't have much complexity, but is a very streamlined experience.

Ridge Racers 1 and 2 are awesome. The 2nd one isn't on US PSN.

If fighters are your thing, then there are a bunch of great PS games.

* Power Stone Collection is a must.
* Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max looks astonishing on the Vita, and perfect on its d-pad.
* Darkstalkers Collection are good ports.
* Capcom Classic Collection offer great ports of SFII (as well as Ghouls'n'Ghosts, Strider and more). All the Capcom PSP games get regular discounts.
* Tekken 6 is a great port which again plays well on the Vita.

The NeoGeo PSP games are well worth checking out. Super Sidekicks is the best arcade footy game you can get on the Vita. Shock Troopers is a fantastic run'n'gun game.

Hey OP, in case you weren't aware, but you can turn bilinear filtering (smoothing) on/off for PSP games. Hold the PS button and go into the options. In some games, filter looks OK. In sprite based games, it's way better to have it turned off.

The Daxter games(I think they're on PSN)

I can confirm both Lost Frontier and Daxter are on PSN. I prefer Lost Frontier because I dig its sky pirate vibe (you can get into bar fights!) but if you're looking for a more pure platformer Daxter is the way to go.

MGS Peace Walker: addictive and fun with usual wonky MGS story. With vitas second stick, much more playable.

Tactics Ogre: luscious sprite work brought to life with that OLED.

Persona 3 Portable: it's P3 on the go.

The god of War games played well on the Vita, they don't look amazing but they do control well, and I'm a sucker for GoW style games

Pretty much anything by Falcom you can get. Every Ys game, Gurumin, etc.

Fighting games I'll only recommend Dissidia because every other fighting game pretty much can be found elsewhere in a better version =X (though most fighting games are pretty competent on the PSP). Get the second one (Duodecim) though, that game has everything from the first game in it.

Rhythm games the PSP has a lot, but you probably have to buy most of them from JP PSN... Stuff like Project Diva, DJ Max, Taiko no Tatsujin are all great games that work pretty well on the PSP.

And for platformers you should really try the Prinny games (there are two, but I think the second one never got a localization).

I unfortunately don't know many substitutes for Phantasy Star Portable 2...

MGS Peace Walker
Dissidia Duodecium
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Patapon
Persona 3 Portable

Those games are a good starting point.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions everyone. I'm building a list.

Oh! Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely experiment with this.

I've done a transfer before. So that works with any PSP game on the PSN store?

This is what I have on Vita right now regarding PSP:

Ape Escape: On The Loose (great 3D remake of the OG AE)
Power Stone Collection (a compilation of two hidden fighting gems from the Dreamcast)
Daxter (one of the best PSP games IMO. Made by Ready At Dawn, also responsible for the amazing God Of War PSP games)
Loco Roco 1&2 (Two quirky 2D platformers with a really unique art style and music. Wish Sony would continue with thsi series)
Archer Mclean's Mercury/ Mercury Meltdown (two underrated platformer/puzzle games that feel right at home with the Vita's suspend feature/portability factor
Gurumin (an action RPG with lots of stuff to do and an interesting storyline)
GTA: Liberty City Stories (It's GTA. Fun as hell
Burnout Legends (It's like a mini Burnout 3. One of the best arcade racers you can get for PSP/Vita overall
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (really good remake of MMX)
Patapon (up there with LL on the quirkiness scale, but I'd recommend one of its sequels instead)
Patchwork Heroes (a cool action/puzzle game reminiscent of QIX)
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War Of The Lions (haven't played it yet, but I've heard it's one of the best PSP offers on the SRPG genre)
Metal Slug Anthology (A decent compilation of the first 6 Metal Slug games plus some other goodies. It's said it has some emulation issues, but I don't notice anything really. Watch a video to see if you can)

And that's all I have! It's a bit long but I hope it helps you. Vita makes PSP games feel new again :)

Hot Shots Tennis/Everybody's Tennis

LOVE this game, the arcade feel and RPG mode makes it one of my fav Tennis games by far, even better then VT4 imo.Too bad there still isn't any everybody tennis games on PS4 or Vita yet :(

Essential exclusives:
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
Jeanne D'arc
Ys 7
Brandish

Do you like something completely different?
Yggdra Union
Knight in the Nightmare
Growslanser: Wayfarer of Time

Do you game on PC? If so grab these on there, otherwise get them on Vita.

Ys: Oath in Felghana
Trails in the Sky

Overrated Games I consider shit:
Disgaea: The SRPGs I listed above all require good planning and execution. Disgaea just throws all that out the window and gives you the 'thrill' of watching numbers go up. Its built from the ground up to grind.

Persona 3: The social sim aspect isn't too bad if you can deal with the contrived social links. However, Tartarus is fucking terrible. What a way to kill an otherwise ok-good game.

Man, how I wish this game (or any of the PSP Hot Shots games) was available on the Brazilian PS Store =(

Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time

You'll be in for the same innovation, immense customization, and strategic challenge of Nocturne's combat; Choice & Consequence with devastating outcomes and over 40 endings; and a story as grand as Xenogears.

It is the preeminent Japanese RPG, and everyone slept on it. I believe SpaceDrake even called it the best RPG of the past decade.

Edit: Oh, I'd also like to mention Monster Hunter and the Armored Core games. The Vita's second analog stick really helps with the control issues that plagued those games on PSP.

Get Monster Hunter Freedom Unite if you don't have access to a Nintendo system.

MHFU is the best hunting game on the Vita.

Edit: Valkyria Chronicles 2 is on PSN :O I have to get some credit.

Growlanser 4 isn't any more an SRPG than Trails is, it uses a similar combat system of units moving around the battlefield, attacks being in/out of range etc.

My favorites are Growlanser 4 for more of a traditional RPG, Gungnir and Yggdra Union for SRPGs, and Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins for action/platformer.

Gungnir was removed from the store in the EU, really annoying as it happened days before I was going to buy it!

For a US account, I'd also recommend Yggdra Union and Jeanne D'arc for SRPGs, I imported both and they were awesome. Do they also have the Star Ocean remakes? The SOII one is pretty good, I enjoyed that.

For both EU and US, I recommend:
Growlanser 4
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
Valkyria chronicles 2
Brandish
Ys: Oath in Felghana
Ys 7
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Megaman X: Maverick Hunter
Megadrive/Genesis collection
Trails in the Sky
Tactics Ogre
Final Fantasy Tactics.

My recommends :-

Tomb Raider Anniversary - best Tomb Raider game, with a great PSP port. Bind L and R to the right stick.

Lunar Silver Star Harmony - top notch remake of the classic GameArts JRPG.

Elminage Original - Do you like Dungeon Crawlers? Meet one of the best.

I'd love to say Brandish, but its not bloody out on the EU Store, yet!

EDIT: Brandish is out on Eu, but not Vita Compatible yet!

Brandish is up on the UK store as of last week, is it not out where you are yet?

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en...nant/cid=EP1023-NPEH00165_00-BRANDISHDARKREVN

It's also playable on Vita, they updated the store entry.

Elminage Original is great though, I thought I wouldn't like it at first, but it brought back all kinds of memories of classic D&D. I ended up absolutely loving it's open go-anywhere nature.

I'm looking at it on the UK store now. It's got PSVita and PSP in the left column, but in the text it says PSP only.

Xseed Facebook page says it is currently PSP only, but then someone commented that they downloaded it on their PSTV.

Mixed messages! My money is waiting when I get a clear go ahead.

EDIT :- Up on Vita Store, yippee!
