"Guitar Hero Live" Announced

The biggest risk they took was non having your old DLC be compatible. I don't support that at all.

Did Guitar Hero have a lot of DLC? I was more in to Rock band, as I preferred the songs and the create a character, and the notes for hammer on and hammer offs were easier to identify.

I liked how band hero 1 songs transferred to 2 (Except Metallica) and all Rock Band 1 DLC was compatible with 2.

The track listing looks poor, and I hope they do the Rock Band model of steady Track Packs rather than rehash a new game every year or less like last time.

GH had quite a bit of DLC. They nuked it all at once across all GH titles last year, even including GH2 360 and the free tracks like the Halo theme for GH3 on the 360. The disc exports are all gone now too.

Good thing Death Grips has music videos

Based on the setlist so far it seems like the music they're going for will have music videos.

The guitar is designed as 3 fret and 2 stringed but it's actually 3 stringed and 2 frets based on the gameplay video. Think of the strings as going across horizontally instead of vertically.

I think I see what you mean, but it really doesn't map well to a real guitar, especially since there's only one "string" to strum.

Whatever! Videogames!

I mean they had songs but mainly Guitar Hero focused around song packs. Plus I don't think they did them like Rock Band where you got a couple new songs every week or something. So yeah I think Rock Band had a lot more DLC.

You can't have been surprised though. They stopped supporting DLC during the Warriors of Rock era, the last few months had weeks worth of content shoved out all at once at the end of each month to minimal fanfare, and Activision clearly weren't bothered that some tracks were uncensored either, especially considering Band Hero (fun game, unforgivable censorship). Combine that with game exports being very limited (the Metallica track from World Tour not exporting despite an entire game being released afterwards, not all of Band Hero exporting despite the feature was available from day 1, Van Halen not exporting at all) and all of the DLC being removed years ago then to be honest, it's a surprise that anyone ever considered the possibility of previous songs being compatible at all, 5 frets or 6.

I never played Warriors of Rock. When your competition is supporting backwards compatibility for most of the DLC, not supprting it is a huge risk.

is multiplayer guitar+guitar? no bass? or is that not known yet?

Track list is one of the worst i've seen

showed some people the trailer yesterday and the general impression seems to be:

A. I dont want to have to learn how the new guitar works

B. This first person shit looks corny

C. No singing? no drums?

D. We can't even make our own band?

as goofy as the avatars may or may not have looked, people (my group at least) really enjoyed seeing their characters singing and playing on stage

I hope Rock Band keeps all of that, but guitar hero has automatically made this not an option for my group of friends.

I dont see a group of people who played together in a group switching since it seems they've both dropped the total number of players AND dropped the total number of options

It's an interesting change for the series, to say the least. I'm not quite feeling it yet but I look forward to giving it a try some day.

Not sure. The multiplayer screenshot I posted earlier had two different simultaneous note tracks, but GH has done that before with guitar vs guitar. That doesn't necessarily exclude a bass vs bass or cooperative guitar + bass mode though.

Might be Rhythm/Lead. I'd assume they'd just go bass though since it makes sense.

According to the wired article on the reveal:

Although previous Guitar Hero games chased Rock Band into the full-band experience, with plastic drums and microphones, Live is going all the way back to the series’ roots: Nothing but guitar. Meghan Trainor might be all about that bass, but Guitar Hero Live is not; it’s lead guitar for everybody, even if multiple players are jamming together.

link

Although I'm not sure they're accurate on jamming together, it seems it's only lead guitar, and it's only multiplayer versus. Hope I'm wrong on that because it's by far the most disappointing thing for me. I don't mind differentiation or innovation or however they'd like to term it, change the modes, strip away the other instruments, I'm okay with that. The biggest nostalgic factor of guitar hero 3 for me is playing with my friends though. Without even a guitar/bass option for co-op, the whole revival becomes a bit meaningless for me. I wonder how many will feel the same. If guitar and guitar is present, well, I guess there is at least some form of co-op, but that just seems incredibly lazy, having two players playing the extra same thing together.

I think they are going to be very liberal in what they chart as well. Expect to be strumming some piano, turntable scratches, and saxaphone in the future

Didn't they already announce that they were going to do that? Or did I just imagine it? Either way, as realistic as they want it to feel, it's probably going to be as unrealistic as ever, which makes the design choice...odd.

I'll still probably get it. If the neck is detachable, swappable with my GH5 one and compatible with Rock Band 4 then it may be the perfect instrument. But I get the feeling that's definitely asking too much.

Are Aerosmith and Metallica in this? (or insert any other band with crazy fans that like to rip off and throw their clothing at the stage)

Going to see a lot of groupie body parts in the front row if they're going for realism..lol

Rated M for mature?

Well there you go...

Might be Rhythm/Lead. I'd assume they'd just go bass though since it makes sense.

In previous competitive modes of GH, you would both play lead, but would often switch at points playing rhythm for a few bars while the other person continues lead to sort of simulate a guitar duel. Looks like that's the case here.

In all honesty, if the game was solid and this "streaming solution" works, I'd probably plunk down for a year-long sub to all channels. I play plastar infrequently enough that if they let me pick on-demand stuff at a reasonable price, I'd probably swing for it.

I like the fact that we are getting a new Sega CD launch game in 2015.

I only just saw the trailer, and I want to unironically echo this. I'm legitimately loving that there's a brand new FMV game coming out in 2015. Right or wrong, it's exciting when a developer does something this left-field with an existing IP.

The wierd part is the FMV aspect reminds me of the Rock Band customs that used the fact that the Rock Band engine was capable of playing FMVs to accomodate the PS2 to insert the music video behind the chart

I'm hardly surprised by most people being outraged about an old franchise bogged down with sequelities getting a reboot with some fresh new features - this is GAF after all. If you keep churning out samey sequels then the developers are being lazy, change things up and introduce some new stuff then the developers are ruining the franchise.

As for me, I'm genuinely excited for this game. As a diehard Rockband fan (and Guitar Hero, pre GH3) with over 1000 DLC songs, the recent RB4 news left me pretty cold. Seems to me they're just putting out an old game on the new consoles. I can see the point in that, and I'm glad that Harmonix is giving people an opportunity to keep playing those games on the new systems. But by the end of last generation I was pretty done with the RB/GH-formula and the thought of going back and playing the same songs with the same mechanics doesn't excite me at all.

I think FreestyleGames is doing the right thing by shaking up the input mechanics. The controller is the key to how you interact with the music. It's the thing that sold the original Guitar Hero to the masses - getting that guitar in your hand and connecting with the music through the buttons.

The idea of mixing up the way you interact with the songs without increasing the complexity (á la Pro instruments in RB3) is key to making the experience feel fresh and keep the concept approachable for casuals as well.

I'm also really diggin the concept of GHTV. Some kind of karaoke-style music library is a must, especially since old DLC won't carry over. I think having curated playlists as well as random ones will be great for discovering new music.

Oh, and the FMV? Who gives a shit. Seriously? 90% of the time I'm not paying any kind of attention to what goes on in the background. That is just fluff and filler. And besides, you see a lot of repeats and similar looking scenes when using 3D rendering. It's not like that stuff is procedurally generated or anything...

Did anyone happen to notice GH Live has yet to appear on the official PlayStation or Xbox blogs?

Maybe they realize how much they fucked up and rather not keep pouring gasoline on the fire.

Only 6 buttons in 2 rows seems odd to me. You don't even have to move your hand at all. If they had kept 5 buttons, and added a 2nd row, that I could get behind. You could even have a legacy mode that just uses the first five buttons, so old songs and guitars were compatible.

Totally agree. Still prefer what we're getting to just replicating the old games on a new system.

But how do you know they are the same mechanics? They really haven't said hardly anything about the new Rock Band game at all, they've tried to keep the new mechanics hidden until the E3 reveal. All we know is it uses the same instruments, supports much of the previously released DLC, and that the music file format has changed (we know this because it's not compatible with the keyboard or pro guitar, so isn't using the format that supports those)

The more I hear about the game, the more I am excited for it over Rock Band. The Giant Bombcast did a great job on selling the new format and it sounds great.

I have to give Activision kudos for doing something more than just the same game in HD while also trying to expand the audience with more variety of music and having a version for tablets and smartphones that can hook up to the TV.

Well, if the game is named Rock Band 4, you'd generally expect a similar Rock Band. It's a mainline title.

To Acti's credit, they didn't number this or present it as a mainline title. It's Guitar Hero: Live, it's clearly a different thing. Like GH: On Tour or Rock Band Blitz.

Now, if this had been called Guitar Hero 7 and the gameplay was like this, I'd agree with anyone that would be pissed off by the change.

Although the design of their guitar doesn't lend itself to releasing a "traditional" Guitar Hero later if they want to. It'd probably be smart to ship the guitars with 5x2 frets to 1) sell their guitars to RB players that prefer their gear and 2) give the option of releasing a traditional GH later without having to start over with the guitar peripheral.

Either way, I'll wait for the game to come out to see if it's playable or not.

I'm a bit surprised by people who think Harmonix is really just going to release Rock Band in HD and call it a day. They said in one of the articles from around announcement time that that's not what they're doing. They've already talked about new features coming that have yet to be announced, and they've barely announced anything beyond the fact that the game exists and keys/pro guitar were dropped. There's still a lot we don't know about Rock Band 4, and it's kinda strange there's such little faith by some people that Harmonix can innovate to make the game fresh again.

I'm interested in GHL making me learn how to play again, but moving buttons around isn't really much innovation. The GH TV stuff and the live video stuff is the real innovation there. The former sounds like it has a lot more potential appeal than the latter though.

This right here. Harmonix I think has something up their sleeves that'll be more "innovative" than FMV or six frets.

45 is pretty good, was hoping for a different TGA song (Old Haunts maybe) or one of their most iconic songs.. but won't complain.
