It's rather unfortunate how streaming games has become a beggar's paradise...

Thats minimalistic as hell

Look at this bullshit. This is the cancer that is killing twitch. He is the #1 stream on CS:GO with over 12K viewers

Looks like MySpace before Facebook came out.

Even Gaben is looking on in disbelief.

Eh, I don't really think it's a big deal. If people enjoy what they do enough that they're willing to throw money at them good for them. I do agree that playing a sound bite everytime someone subs or donates can get a little annoying though

I might just be too old for this new phenomenon, but I don't get the appeal for streams unless the game is old (PS2/GC or older) or the game is being played competitively and you're watching high level play.

I like watching Giant Bomb streams, but I'm more there for the personality and the video games are incidental.

I would of agreed with your second point, then I realized I only watch professional gaming on Youtube where the video has been editted to cut out the downtime between matches and has commentary by a team of casters.

My problem is that back in the Golden Days of Youtube people use to make a ton of cool content about video games and so on. But now everyone is too busy trying to get people to watch their Let's Plays and trying to establish a career in playing video games.
"Smosh has a new video! Oh it's just them advertising for their let's play..."

It's sickening, and I still don't understand why people enjoy watching people play video games. I always hear that they are entertaining. So am I, so pick up a damm controller and play with me.

I consider it very sad, people will rather watch someone play games then play them themselves. Then I see these flashing lights of people playing games begging for money, probably not having any life goals once they realize they can't sustain a career playing video games for the rest of their lives, or if their beauty/talent dries up do to old age, health from doing nothing but playing video games, and the likes.

Granted, this is still a very new job/career that has recently blew up in recent years. So who knows how this may evolve or even effect our world. But it still baffles me just how much time people waste watching other people play games. Twitch Plays Pokemon was actually fun because it was a fusion of watching and playing. Competitive sports (although I hate it) I understand that people like seeing people becoming professionals playing their favorite games and even learning from them. There are some things I understand, but things like Markipler and Pewtiepie I frown down upon because all they do is scream in a mic have millions of viewers and get paid greatly because people are... Watching this?

Come on just pick up a game and play it, enjoy it with friends, make friends to play it with. Isn't that the point? To be even too lazy to play a video game is worse then sitting down on a couch watching football because your too lazy to play it.

LOL Gabe's face in the corner
I swear rhe Gabe fans are strange to me. I guess every platform for some people need a face to represent it.

^used to sing a goddamn "subscriber song" every time someone subbed ffs. I'm not sure if they do it anymore. I haven't watched in a good while

Eh, that stopped after a while. Now they just say thanks and carry on. Admittedly I did like the singing, though. There were rarely more than one subscriber per hour, so it wasn't a big hassle - to me, anyway.

To elaborate on what I meant by begging: It means having a donation link be the first thing people see in the "About" section having a constant scrolling counter of who donated. That is very much begging in an indirect form.

People have donated thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars to a single Twitch channel and it blows my mind.

For example, http://www.twitch.tv/legendarylea

TOP 10
* AMHAI $23,100
* Richppl $21,777.76
* Anonymous $14,037.94
* Zoonster $8,025.20
* IDHQ $6,716.66
* BigBadDaddy12 $5,829.67
* TemporalChains $5,100
* Anonymous $4,935.66
* Thebiggles1996 4,571.95
* ROMENDACIL $4,571

I don't understand why people pay to watch streams. Yea it's great to watch something's on YouTube to get an idea of how to play or learn new tactics, but I am not into watching people contiously play a game. These streamers are also acting like their viewers owe them for their time.

I think a lot of people are generalizing on this thread and that's unfortunate. There are some good streamers out there that work long 12 or more hour days and focus on entertaining their viewers above all else. If I'm being entertained I'm willing to toss them a few bucks. No one is forcing me to. Do people spend $120 a month on 200 channels of garbage? I'm guessing for most of us the answer is yes. A lot of times after a long day of work I'm to tired to do any gaming but watching is a close 2nd to actually gaming for me personally. It's also a great way to preview games I'm unsure about or discover games I never heard of. Bottom line there are terrible streamers out there that are money hungry but those people are easy to pick out. That's no reason to bash the entire community.

I remember one time I hopped into a Rock Band stream a while ago, the guy literally refused to play until someone "donated a song"

Well, I like watching people play horror games but I'm terrified of playing them myself. Also, it's not like I own every console or have enough money to purchase every game I'm on the fence about. And sometimes I like multitasking, so I'd rather watch a stream instead of play a game.

However, the donation sounds/images/requests get annoying, as do the unnecessary chats on screen and face cams, ESPECIALLY when the person being face cammed doesn't change their face the whole duration of the game anyway.

It is annoying to watch it turn into business. One of the main reasons I like watching streams is to see the passion on display. I generally watch FGC/Smash tournaments, speedrunners, or high level Smashers. The former usually has ads all over the place, sponsors plastered on the overlay, shoutouts to sponsors pretty often, etc. The latter two often get to the point where the players are just talking about subs, sub goals, thanking subscribers, telling people to subscribe or follow, reading donations, etc. Nothing of it in particular is that bad, but all added up I get tired of hearing it. I get tired of these little hobbies becoming about money.

BUT, at the same time, I'm really glad a lot of these people are able to make a living from the games I enjoy watching. And that's a great enough thing that it feels mostly worth it to overlook all the business things I don't wanna hear about.

real talk tho, someone i met at my college had talked to me about streaming games just to make money

i mean can you blame them? people are giving them money so it's a good financial solution, it's even easy to get started doing if youve got the equipment

those overlays really kill me tho. im a graphic design major and i see some of the worst design decisions in those things

People give money to things they like because they want more of that thing. Why is that so wrong? These people run a business and a lot of them need to do this to make that living off twitch. Good for them really. You just sound bitter honestly.

I'd love to be able to stream on twitch but Australian internet is still in the dark ages. Would love to just stream the game and barely chatter.

I feel like Maximilian's stream gets way too donation and sub heavy that it blocks the game audio. I swear if I hear Stan Bush's "The Touch" and "ULTRA COMBOOOO!" one more time.....

Except these people would play games regardless if they got money for it or not. And if they wouldn't, then why are you supporting a non-gamer on a gaming site?

I think we can dislike it all we want but these people have it down to an art and it works for them because they have hundreds of people watching them and donating to them..so i guess as much as a few of us dislike it there is the same amount who don't even care about it being smothered all over.

Its really not a good financial decision for most. If you look at their income as a whole they keep about 2.50 per sub, a little for advertising, and the rest is based on partnerships and sponsorships. Only the top 3 to 5 percent make enough money to sustain themselves. Some make a fortune but those are the absolute top. It's very over saturated at this point and the chances of success are very low. Hitting minimum wage would be a challenge.

I really only use Twitch to watch fighting game tourneys and sometimes some competitive Gears or something. The stuff with commentary is ok when it's an event. If they have a face-cam or graphics I don't watch. I don't even keep chat up for any streams at this point.

If I'm just going to tune in to watch some gameplay of a new title I want to check out I just find someone with no viewers and tune in for awhile just to make his/her day.

It's almost as if people like the entertainment enough to support the person making it.

I am sure but sometimes it feels like people like to see their name in lights. Some kind of satisfaction from seeing their name on the stream and streamers play into it by plastering top 10 donations, pop up following/subs, etc.

I have seen donation wars many times before, people just trying to out donate eachother.

I'm not a huge fan of donations where they have a donation leaderboard and messages, but it is what it is.

My favorite way to see donations is just a name pop up, no amount, no message, but if streamers did this it would probably lead to smaller and fewer donations.

They probably wouldn't stream as often. I play games on my own all the time, at the pace I like to play them, I'd probably play more often if people were paying me to do so.

This post just sounds like bitter grapes. Though, to be fair, you're definitely not alone in this thread.

I don't think this overlay is the worst thing here. The worst thing is 12K people watching cases being opened, but that's on the viewers and consumer culture as a whole.

I don't understand the hate Twitch streamers and YouTubers get here. They provide their time to stream and people like it enough to pay. If you don't want to pay, you don't have to. Watch the damn thing for free. If the donation signs bother you, guess what. You don't have to watch. Twitch is a huge website where you can find any kind of streamer. No one is forcing you to watch anything.

It all comes down to "I don't like it, so no one else should either!!"
For some reason this is just one of those topics that makes GAF lose its shit. Just like mobile gaming.

"If you don't like it, don't watch it" is the most useless thing to bring to any discussion.

It's sort of weird, isn't it? I don't even like the term donate because it implies charitable purposes. But kudos to those that find a way to make a living playing video games.

I liken it to virtual street performers. Yeah their act may be cool, but I'm not likely to throw a buck in the hat.

Exactly. You're not obligated to give them money. And if you don't like them you can simply go somewhere else.

I tried to find a video a few weeks back of Octodad gameplay to show someone how it worked. Literally every single video I found was just annoying 'Let's Play' people talking over how shitty they were playing the game.

No trailer. No walkthroughs. Just jackasses wasting my god damn time.

We act as if microtransactions are evil, but then I see morons giving people shitloads of money.

His first day he made 18k in donations alone.

Totally puzzled at how people just throw money at frippery, but our culture is totally focused on that. We throw unfathomable amounts of money at totally disposable things, and I find that bewilderingly amusing. Consumer Capitalism V. 12.0 at work, I guess.

The love and use of money in the world today is a cause of a lot of bullshit, sure, and there are bigger fish to fry in the poison in the money system, but it still really irks me to see things society doesn't need get money thrown at it in droves, but the things we do need in society, it seems nobody really cares for, or pays poorly. Nobody should be making $18,000 in a single day unless they're changing the world or making a cure to a major illness. The stuff that keeps civilized life possible for most of us probably doesn't even make 1/16th of that money in a single day compared to such things, which as I said before, can vanish overnight and the world/society wouldn't be in trouble and have to change things. If anything, it just highlights another absurdity in a money-centered society, and there's a lot of absurdities to see if one just gazes at the scenery for a moment.

I've tried streaming and it takes me out of any single player experience.Even more so when I talk over the game.

If stream it has to be either multiplayer or a game I've played many times.

Otherwise I am losing the very purpose behind gaming for me : Escapism.

If money is involved ,I imagine it would mean completely losing what gaming offers me ,and that's a sad thought(to me personally,It might very different for others)

Couldn't have said it better myself. I think a lot of people don't consider the amount of work that goes into streaming. Tons of planning, long days, long nights, and an insane amount of focus to be an interactive streamer. When your not streaming your answering private messages and having calls with sponsors and partners. All that and trying to maintain some small bit of a social life. I did a ton of research on becoming a Twitch Streamer. Once I found out the amount of work it entailed I decided against it. I prefer 8 hour work days not 14!

I don't ask for donations when I stream. I have a day job (well, night shift, but whatever) as a Registered Nurse so when I stream it's just for funsies. If people want to donate, great, but I don't think I even have a link for it on my streaming page.

What I REALLY don't get is people that throw money at female streamers just because they may or may not be suggestively dressed. I mean it's not like the internet has that stuff everywhere for free or anything... just seems odd to me that people do that.

But yeah I agree OP I really can't stand the chat of most streams, let alone streamers who shove DONATE DONATE DONATE in your face.

I stream for free, not gonna lie I've thought about adding a donation button and whatnot but honestly I dont have the time to commit to it. I'm pretty sure I'd end up hating videogames if streaming was my only source of income

I actually unfollowed Man Vs Game this week. Someone who I've followed on Twitch for near 2 years.

His regression from an interesting streamer to a megaphone fused beggar has been really painful to watch. I remember watching his Dark Souls streams when the game first launched and having so much fun.

It's just a damn shame that game streaming has turned into idiots spamming that stupid kappa face and throwing money at people for no reason. Very difficult to find a decent channel now days that has a normal chat. Normally have to scroll down quite a bit.

Variety streamers suck in general, but there are a lot of good streams out there. You just need to find them.
