Was the Batgirl series focusing on Cassandra Cain never turned into trades? Comixology has all the individual issues, which I guess is fine, but no volumes

It had trades. They're all out of print and DC just hasn't asked them to make digital volumes for it.

No problem at all.
You can currently get a free month of Unlimited by using STARWARS as a coupon code when checking out, it's a great service and worth checking out for a month at least. I've dropped every Marvel book I read other than Silver Surfer and just wait the six months for it to show up on Unlimited.

I just downloaded the Marvel Unlimited app as well. It's a great service in my opinion. Currently going through Remender's Uncanny X-Force run. Cool stuff

Hey, maybe something can help me out here. I'm thinking of signing up for Marvel Unlimited at least to try it out and was scanning through the catalogue trying to find out which series to first jump on if I do sign up (suggestions are VERY welcome*).

As someone who hasn't read comics steadily probably ever, I do think I understand creators change a lot in most series and so does quality, so reading an Arc makes more sense than an entire series sometimes. The browsing for Marvel doesn't seem to help see points where the series restarted too well. As an example, I read the start of Ultimate Spider back in the day and was thinking that was a series I might check out again. Still, it seems I can't find some issues on there.

This seems to be the main run:
http://marvel.com/comics/series/466/ultimate_spider-man_2000_-_2009

134-151 ??? (wikipedia seems to say they renumbered to 1 and then back up ?)

Then the last ones with Peter:
http://marvel.com/comics/series/8509/ultimate_comics_spider-man_2009_-_2012

Miles (still not all on unlimited?):
http://marvel.com/comics/series/13831/ultimate_comics_spider-man_2011_-_present

then these?:
http://marvel.com/comics/series/18508/miles_morales_ultimate_spider-man_2014_-_present

*if it helps out I kinda open to reading most characters, mostly familiar with the big names, are those feuds that happened in the last few years with Cyclops and Wolverine good? Where to start?

edit: I guess the feud did lead to the recommend "all-new x-men" in the op?

Marvel Unlimited can be poorly organized at time, often because every series is listed as the official title. This is especially bad when important issues, like say an annual, need to be tracked down elsewhere because it's officially a part of the "Spider-Man Annual" or "Giant-Sized Spider-Man" series, for instance.

To answer your question, Ultimate Soider-Man issues after #133 can be found under "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man (2009-2012)" on Marvel Unlimited. The Miles run starting in 2011 is all on Unlimited, but for some reason is listed as still happening. It leads into an event at the end and then the Miles run starting in 2014 takes over. It's confusing, I know. I've learned that most things are on Marvel Unlimited if you look hard enough.

So I've go into comics the last few months, with great help from a friend after him lending me over 40 DC books. Thoroughly enjoyed most of them and highlights include Hush and Black mirror! Started my own collection now with some marvel ( Wolverine and Daredevil) and just tonight I've purchased the first two volumes of Lazarus. Just a quick tip if you're reading new 52 supergirl I'd recommend also reading H'el on earth, I hadn't and became pretty confused in volumes 3-4.

Are there any rumblings of DC launching a service similar to Marvel Unlimited? Such a missed opportunity imo.

None. Like I mentioned in the main post, they're definitely not as digital friendly as Marvel, but they're also not against it. They haven't figured it out yet like Marvel. Another reasoning for this could be due to them looking at their sales numbers and they can't afford to lose their purchases on Comixology like Marvel could with a free code.

Which is kinda funny when you realize DC were the first to go day and date on digital releases.

That's so bizarre. I still believe it has way more to do with their financial standing vs. Marvel's than them being incapable of making it happen. Someone at the top thinks it's a bad idea.

DC's really dragging their heels on the digital front. They need to get trades up. I'm not gonna buy months and months of singles on CMX for old releases.

I do wanna try to read a DC book next month though. Either Power Trip or Bloodspell. Marvel has so quickly edged them out for me the past couple of months, haha. MU doesn't make it any easier.

They were also the first to have digital trades via that agreement with Amazon when the Kindle Fire first launched, but since then they've gone kind of stagnant on the digital front. It's probably DiDio's fault.

Supposedly, he's very focused on single print issues. It's also why their TPB release schedule is so garbage.

They do seem to be better at keeping archive stuff in print than Marvel, but not by much.

I will give them credit for building up their digital back catalog, they probably release 15-20 classic issues a week on CMX.

It still pisses me off that DC doesn't have a digital service like Marvel Unlimited, but I can also see why they wouldn't want to get involved with that too.

It's a shame because Marvel Unlimited is making it so I'm reading 90% Marvel stuff overall and completely ignoring DC's superhero stuff. Not going to lie, this hobby is probably the most expensive in terms of how the cover price and how fast I can consume the content, and Marvel Unlimited made it affordable to me.

Bucellato and Manapul Flash run is fun as fuck, the art is hnnnngggggggggg. Heard the run lasts till issue #25 oh well, I'll savour it while it lasts.

Absolutely. Up until about five years ago I would make weekly trips to the comic shop and drop $30 on average. I stopped primarily because of the cost...you hit it right on the head. Marvel Unlimited makes it easy for me to catch up and not drop too much money.

Just gonna repost the question I had in the Comics OT, hope that's cool:

Okay, so maybe I'm going crazy, but it seems like on Comixology (my go-to place for comics that are not on Marvel Unlimited) there's a LOT of time I can buy a trade paperback of some run for $15, or the individual issues that make up the run for $2 each, meaning I save a few bucks just getting the issues and not the trade. This is especially prevalent with Image Comics

Is there some value proposition I'm missing on the trades here? It makes sense in physical print, but not really with digital

Yup very true with Image. Just picked the issues that make up Lazarus Volume 3 for $10, while the volume itself is $15

So anyone following the current crop of X-Men books? What's the best ongoing to get into at the moment?

I limit myself to five series to follow because of my budget (my current pull list atm: ASM, Batman, Daredevil, Hellboy and friends), but I think I can fit one more and I've been craving some X-Men action for a while.

Pretty much. I can buy all the issues of Supreme: Blue Rose right now for $14, or wait for the trade to come out in July for $15. This whole thing seems weird but whatever

Question: After hearing on GAF how amazing Ultimate Reed Richards is, I wanna read his story. I'm a comics dabbler at best these days, so how do I locate the stuff his story is in?

That's a tough question because... well... there isn't any at the moment.

If you haven't read Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force or Jason Aaron's Wolverine and the X-Men runs, I'd recommend those over current X-books. Although I do enjoy Spider-Man & the X-Men right now after it's rocky start.

DC really needs to come up with something akin to Marvel Unlimited, I want to get into Geoff Johns Green Lantern run, and right now that's seems pretty fucking daunting. Too many issues.

Ultimate Fantastic Four is available digitally on Marvel Unlimited or comixology, sadly I believe the paperbacks are all out of print.

Better than IDW's physical books

They're like $17.99 or something for four issues. Shit is ridiculous.

The first omnibus is out and volume 2 drops this summer. Volumes 3 and 4 will likely be next year.

It's also available in a bunch of paperbacks, I'd be happy to give you the reading order.

Just get the new omnibus. It's well worth the money and even though it might be $60, it doesn't require a day one patch, and multiplayer works because ComicGAF will always be there to talk to you about it.

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
Isaac you son of a bitch.

In regards to Alan Moore, his work is extremely hit or miss, and some of his other work like Halo Jones (which is god tier IMO) is a bit too deep for new readers. I will flesh it out throughout the weekend, but the only other Moore titles that will probably end up on the list are Swamp Thing and From Hell. The other titles such as Leage/Halo/Ect. are better left as books for intermediate fans to discover and read after they are familiar with a particular writer's style.

I beg you to put Top 10 on that list. God tier!

I would definitely skip out on Ultimatum, U. Hawkeye, and U. X-men, IMO.

Just noticed this thread. Excellent idea. It's a shame how many misconceptions there are about comics and it's good to try and help people figure out a way into an admittedly complicated industry.

I'll definitely add some of that stuff tonight. I'm going to hopefully add Dynamite, IDW, and Valiant tonight, along with all of the artists next to their books which I just completely ignored by accident.

For people who want to start reading comics or for people who are tired and burned out I HIGHLY recommend the following:

Moon Knight:From The Dead
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0785154086/?tag=neogaf0e-20
JUL140728.jpg

Black Widow:The Finely Woven Thread
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PSN1C06/?tag=neogaf0e-20
51ChzswyeQL.jpg

Excellent reads, beautiful jumping on points, you don't have to know anything about the characters (moon knight is for all intents and purposes a reboot), you don't need to read ten other books and miniseries to understand the story, each issue within is a self contained chapter. Writing and art are top notch. I found them at the library and picked them up after being burned out by DC and Marvel's continuity event crap and was totally enthralled.

What's the reading order then?

I was thinking Rebirth--->No Fear--->Revenge--->Wanted etc...

Yep!

Rebirth > No Fear > Revenge > Wanted > Sinestro Corps War > Secret Origin > Rage of the Red Lanterns > Agent Orange > Blackest Night (you can read GL Blackest Night or skip it, it's pretty contained in the main miniseries) > Green Lantern: Brightest Day > War of the GL's > Sinestro > Revenge of Black Hand > Here you can read End or read the Rise of the Third Army and Wrath of the First Lantern trades, Johns run is pretty contained to End if you wanna skip the crossover stuff.
