Playtonic unveils Yooka-Laylee (Banjo Kazooie successor) [Kickstarter LIVE - Funded]

I don't see what is weird about it. Then again I am woman and I know how it feels not having enough positive representation in fiction.

I'm a man and I want Yooka to be female sooooo badly. I'd even be okay if they were both female. But the more I look at that Vine video, the more I am convinced that Yooka is indeed female and Laylee is male.

Awesome! :D

My only complaint with the footage is the camera, it follows the characters a bit too much during the jumps. But it's so early, there's plenty of time to refine it.

Yeah, I noticed that too, but since it's a concept video more than anything no big deal. Other than that it looks pretty good.

They seriously dont want to tell everyone what gender they are? I dont know what bothers me more, the fact that theyre basically trying to hype that up or that people care about the gender of an animal that most likely wont even actually talk and will be a bunch of random noises

The latter bothers me, specially since when we get an answer whatever it is there'll be people complaining for a reason or another dismissing the whole thing.

This got me thinking.

How would everyone want their voices to be? Would you want it to have voice actors or, like in Banjo-Kazooie, the sounds?

Well, Chris Sutherland is on the team and he did the voices (mumbling) for Banjo and Kazooie + Grant Kirkhope did Mumbo/Jinjos/etc, so I think they'll probably go that route again

This looks great. Really like the character designs (I love bats and chameleons are cool too) and the little gameplay snippet looks promising. I'm so happy that this project is a thing. Loved Banjo-Kazooie back in the day.

It's strange to let the gender of these little creatures be the decisive factor in backing the game imo.

You would be surprised how many people back something just because of the backer awards or stretch goals as opposed to the game itself.

I do that (it's a little bit of both, but still), I don't think it's that weird. If there are no good backer-exclusive goodies then I might as well just wait till the game comes out to pay, right?

My main issue with Kickstarter is mostly people who make the games don't have level 1 done to show off. Seems these guys put in their own funds to make level 1 for a pitch video. So yeah, going all in.

Well, the thing is Playtonic said the game will happen even if the KS fails, the purpose of the KS is not to fund the game itself, but to put it in as much platforms as possible, as i understood.

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
People saying gender doesn't matter because they're animals just reminds me of how people used that excuse in the Transformer and Minecraft threads...

The MAJORITY of animal mascot characters are male, and when there's major female characters, they're often the same type of animal as the male---Amy Rose, Krystal, Dixie Kong, Babs Bunny, Minnie Mouse, etc.

I found Kazooie as a kid, and even more as an adult, to be such a great character because she bumped that trend---she was allowed to be her own animal, and wasn't a gender swap of a pre-existing character. It also helped that she was such a hothead and delightfully rude character that went against the usual theme of the female animal character being stereotypically girly and otherwise bland.

Might seem like a little thing to you, but you know, even the littlest thing can be the decisive factor to tip the scales for someone on the fence about backing a project.

So the music vine was nice but also bothered me a bit when we could see the back of laylee. Why don't they have a tail? Whether in a membrane or on it's own I need a cute little bat tail.

My backing of the Kickstarter tomorrow is contingent on:

- Yooka Laylee Amiibo
- Yooka getting some articles of clothing like Banjo did
- Yooka or Laylee's gender being changed to female.

All of these would be amazing, especially the clothing. I'm going to bet that Yooka is a girl and Laylee a boy, the reversal would make so much sense.

Bracing for dat "Yooka-using-Laylee-as-a-gun" fan art.

at first i was like "What would Laylee shoot?" then i remembered they mentioned a sonic blast thingy as one of the moves for Laylee, so i can see it, Laylee shooting cartoony sonic waves.

Now i sort of want it in the game.

Gonna be honest, I'm not feeling this right now. Maybe when the game is farther along it'll seem better, but it just looks really generic right now.

While opening this thread, I was going "hmm, what's getting people so excited on this?" That's because I'm made aware of the existence of this game.

Soon afterwards, I am sooooooooo backing this game once its KS page goes up. Is it now?
