So who here remembers this game?
latest

I recall hearing it wasn't very good, but honestly I don't care, I wanna play it as that cover is among the best that Toriyama's ever made.

ma man. love that cover. still sad we never got it. i was patiently awaiting its arrival after DQVIII :/

I'm slightly more hopeful for this than I was for DQ7. That is still really close to zero hope though. I don't want to have hope because I was just about over the whole no DQ7 here thing.

Has it been mentioned that the release date for the game is August 27 in Japan?

Edit: Oh nevermind it has. :p Just no one seems to have discussed it.

I think the release date shows a possible fall or February release in North America. I just really hope it happens.

This is where I'm at on the localization situation. It wouldn't take much for square to bring it here, but I'm so jaded and salty as hell after DQX and DQVII that I am expecting nothing until told otherwise.

I dont get why Square dosnt remaster the DQ games for PS4. Still love to replay this. The iPad version without voice acting is stupid.

I think it is because the Japanese audience has switched to mobile gaming (handheld and phones). It'll be easier for square to push out a 3ds port than to remaster it for ps4. At the end of the day, they will make more money on 3ds. They weren't factoring the west for this decision because if they were they would've announced this globally.

I'm holding out hope for a nod at E3. If it's ignored by both square and Nintendo, then I'm going to be furious.

Any in-game images yet? Curious to see what it'd look like.

Rather surprised it isn't an N3DS game...

Also bestest boss theme

In this case, they're looking at Japan only and in Japan the 3DS is the leading system.

While releasing such a game remastered on the PS4 could give it a sales boost, I'm guessing they went with the cheaper option.

Really though Sonty should've just driven a truckload of cash to S-E and a few other devs to lock on some exclusives. Besides SF5 at least :V

I think a better question is why remaster it for the PS4 . At least half of the series are playable on a Jpn 3DS.

Man, the entire games soundtrack is just perfect. The game oozes atmosphere with its calm music that know show to ramp up for boss battles. It's like a feel-good game. If I could turn random encounters off and just walk around the overworld and listen to that amazing theme, I would spend 100 hours alone walking the fields.

There's a scan floating around showing the in-game graphics, which looks rather good for a 3DS game.
Yeah, looks great.
I hope Enix will slap the already existing english translation and release the game in the west.
I would accept even a Download Only release.

It looks really good compared to the original. While I have the original in my collection I´m really looking forward to this release due to it beeing on a handheld and I´m really interested in the extra content in form of new playable characters and new story scenario. Beeing in 3D is also a big plus to me personally. SQEX really has to localize it, with DQ 8 beeing one of the most popular entries in the West the chances seem to be higher at the very least.

Scans certainly look good. Now just have to see how well the framerate holds up.

Also, is it safe to assume that this won't have 3D, like all of S-E's recent big name 3DS games?

DVD9 >>>>>> 3DS cartridge

amazing port job....

DQ8 wasn't a DVD9 game. It's < 4GB, which shouldn't be a problem for a 3DS cartridge.

Looks fairly good. I just remembered how much I didn't like the mostly empty world with a high encounter rate, but switching to non-random encounters should make looking around a lot more tolerable. Hopefully they fill in some new chests and goodies to incentivize exploration, maybe random sidequests or something.

I didn't even realize the enemies in the overworld picture. If they removed random encounters and added enemies on the map, it's going to be truly an amazing version of the game. The only gripe I had with the original was that the random encounters were too frequent.

I can't believe this exists.

I'm actually really curious to see if the second screen is more than just a map. Would be nice if we could have a timer for the alchemy pot and look at the progress on the bottom screen. I would also enjoy a map that allows some notes to be drawn on it.

This is basically my favorite game ever, so I'd more or less kill for an English version, especially if there are new scenarios involved. Fingers crossed - at least the fact that the original was the source for modern localisations is cause for optimism.

I don't think they got rid of random encounters. It seems more plausible that they've changed the locations of the recruitable monsters.

I just checked the iOS game and Hammerhoods show up in that exact spot as a random encounters. The only special enemy in the remote area is a heal slime man o war. Im assuming this screen shot points to no random encounters.

The only way I see this being a possibility is if they changed the locations of special enemies and there look. The hammerhead looking infamous monster is in a completely different area and carries a blackish hammer. The screen shot shows a light wooden colored hammer, the same ones that are random enemies in the area.

They got rid of random encounters in the DQ7 remake to bring the game in line with DQ9. It'd be really weird if they didn't do the same with a DQ8 remake, unless system resources are so tight that they can't.

Going off a magazine scan that I just saw, this looks pretty great. It's based off the PS2 game, rather than the Unity port to iOS/Android, which saw cuts to the original game's lighting as well as other important details (windows wouldn't glow yellow at night)

Just hope it supports 3D, really, especially after Theatrhythm Dragon Quest and FF Explorers didn't. Shin Megami Tensei IV and Ocarina of Time 3D are the gold standard for 3D third person games, Xenoblade's 3D effect was a big disappointment in comparison.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I dont mind random battles in DQ8 and dont really think that the game needs it for this remake..just hope they can reduce the loading time when switching from open world to battle and maybe speed up the battles themselves.

I agree MH4U looks amazing in 3D - would be great to wander through DQ8 in 3D as well. Even if its n3DS exclusive.

If they keep random battles, I'd like for them to add a slider that shuts them off or increases them just like bravely default. Some times I want to explore, sometimes I want to grind. Well, I guess with "whistle" there is no point in increasing the frequency.

I'd forgotten about Monster Hunter's amazing 3D. Being a 2015 game fingers crossed Square have been working with new dev kits. It seems a lot of the "big" 3DS game from Japan since N3DS launch have supported N3DS enhancements -- circle pad pro to C-Stick emulation --aside in one way or another.

Oh, and I really hope Square-Enix in the west tackle this. They seem to be happy getting the iOS ports/rereleases out the door in English given most the text had been localised, so it'd be nice if this saw the same treatment. Even if it's digital-only due to needing to ship on a 4GB game card (I presume), I'll take what I can get.

It would make sense for them to at least try. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall Enix/L5 admitting that DQ8's dungeons actually were designed with visible enemies in mind (which is why they are a lot more open than normal) and only took them out because the PS2 couldn't handle it beyond the occasional special encounter.

so they didn't chibify the game? Interesting, it retains the PS2 style.

I think camera c-stick is a given for n3DS. I think square is only making this because the iPhone port was too much of a compromise when it came to gameplay and atmosphere. I have a gut feeling this will be the definitive version of this game. I can see Nintendo of America getting behind this as a major n3DS game in America.

Just seen the scan, think it looks good and not much of a downgrade.
Hope we'll get some official pics/videos soon!

What's with the little boy and the princess (I don't remember this in the ps2 game) ? Can anyone translate this ?

They could've added in more story for the (post game spoilers)
origin story of the hero. They explained to you the story but that is pretty much it. Some cinematic and narrative between the kid version of be hero and his mother would be awesome.

That would be the best of both worlds...but for some reason i dont think they will give us that level of custom setting on a DQ remake.

A lot of JRPGs for 3DS in the last year or so had chibi/almost chibi characters designs. It created a myth that 3DS can't handle normal character models, even tho there are games that disprove it.

That just shows how dumb some people are.

Art styles have nothing to do with fidelity.

The 3DS should be able to handle this game rather easily.

Beside's making the game Chibi style would more expensive since that would require new assets. Not just in the main characters, but townsfolks and humanoid enemies.

Why would they "chibify" the game?

how can people say something quality-wise from that blurried scan? :

I guess I'll answer both of these at the same time. People earlier in the thread were claiming the 3DS would not be able to run the game looking the way the PS2 version was and they were worried the graphics would be gutted. Even though the screens are just scans, it's obvious they kept in tact the same graphics as the original version. Now, whether the game is smooth in the field or not is a different story, but the screens show it's the same game with the same look.
