Can Nintendo win you back?

This is mostly geared to those that jumped Nintendo's ship at the start of the Wii era, but anyone is more than welcome to answer, obviously.

We're all familiar with Nintendo's drastic change in direction during the Wii era. Once they tasted that Blue Ocean, they ran with it full speed ahead, but a lot of gamers out there, some who have been with Nintendo since the beginning, felt cheated, or let down. Nintendo seemed more intent on making games that would appeal to a broader audience, which led them to forget about their core consumer.

More recently, Nintendo has seemingly started to understand that the Blue Ocean strategies of yore are not what made them popular, and are not going to make them money. We've seen them dish out a lot of fan service left and right, and it seems like it's going to continue this way.

There's still a lot to be fixed, more notably, their 3rd party relationships. So, my question to you lot is, what did Nintendo do to lose you, and what can they do that would bring you back?

They still make great games so they got me until they stop. So they need to keep doing that. Don't really mind the 3rd party relations thing since I usually have multiple consoles

Just get big on third party, awesome hardware, make awesome first party stuff more like Xeno Blade and not just Mario and friends and I will most likely find it appealing.

They're a corporation, I feel nothing personal about any business decision they make that is in the best interest of their business.

If they make a product that appeals to me I will buy it. I honestly don't care who makes my games or what platform they play on.

So I guess I can't say they lost me because no one actually has me. I struggle reconciling people's blind loyalty to products and companies sometimes.

So I guess as long as they make products that I know I will enjoy then I will support them. I don't buy all Nintendo products, and I sure as heck don't support all of their wacko business decisions, but I do buy the games and system(s) that appeal to me.

I also don't think Nintendo should worry about pleasing one group or the other outside of focusing on deliver good content and focusing on all customer satisfaction in general. I know that's a generic answer, but it's pretty simple.

Nintendo lost me 2006 with the Wii, I'm not really a fan of the WiiU's gimmicky controller either but I still plan on picking one up when the price drops and a few more games come out, probably sometime next year.

If they made a console that had the vast majority of 3rd party games, with no major loss of features.

If they had a account system up to par.

Then I have no issue having a Nintendo console as my main. However, I see this as things that Nintendo will never do.

"Blue Ocean" was hella good for them, It got them a ton of money with the Wii Fit and Wii Sports games and still we saw things like the Mario Galaxy games under it. The Wii U just did nothing to retain the audience; there was no novelty or modernity that was applicable or communicated well during its release. Plus, existing during the time of the smartphone boom is not helpful - bad timing.

It's really not "me" that needs to be won back, it's more third party people. Personally I'm most interested in the Japanese devs, but some support from other Western devs would be helpful.

They have never really lost me. I have just changed, and my gaming interests have changed a lot as I have grown older. I do not mean that Nintendo only makes kids games. I just know that as my interests go in different directions then Nintendo is going.

I still love the hell out of the company but my focus is more on PC gaming and more online based games such as Destiny.

Edit:

Mario Kart 8 drunken couch play is the best!
Wonderful 101 is freaking brilliant!

They've lost me by providing second rate hardware and technical infrastructure in the past few years, combined with my distaste for amiibo DLC and terrible online systems.

Their saving grace is unique games, but honestly if I never play another nintendo game in my life I don't think I'll even notice. Its hard to see what they could do to win me back, the easy answer is providing casual games I can play on android/iOS but going down that path is extremely scary (for Nintendo) and I don't think the company that comes out of that would be one I recognize.

I currently own a New 3DS regular (white), New XL (black) and a Wii U.

I don't think they need to win me back. I never left. As long as Nintendo games are available only on Nintendo consoles, I will never give them up. There is absolutely nothing else in the industry that comes close for me.

I mean technically they have me cause I do own a Wii U and 3DS but that's cause I own everything. Nintendo has been reduced to that kind of fun side thing of the industry in my mind which is fine. For them to fully win me over they would have to change so much that they would not be Nintendo anymore.

I didn't feel cheated or disappointed. I just think the games aren't compelling and a lot of the marketing is lame. The Splatoon commercial gives me a headache. I no longer own Nintendo hardware from DS era onward.

Never left, I'm having fun with their games. Currently playing Puzzle & Dragons: SMB Edition, and Xenoblade 3D. I have a list of games I have yet to play. And I'm excited for their E3 Digital Event.

I was a huge Nintendo fan growing up. Hell, I'd probably still put the SNES at the top of my "best consoles ever" list. But, after a few years of the Wii, I fell out with Nintendo.

Over the past couple years, I've often been seriously envious of people who still dig Nintendo's output. I asked for a 3DS for Xmas because I wanted to see if it could bring me back into good graces with Nintendo.

And I've barely used it. Only game I've completed on it is Shovel Knight. Played a couple hrs of 3D Land, SMT, Fire Emblem, OoT, and couldn't bring myself to finish any of them. Can't tell if I'm just too cynical to enjoy Nintendo anymore, or what, but, nothing they do appeals to me anymore.

Maybe someday, but, the way they're headed now (Amiibos can go to hell) I just don't know if it'll ever happen.

they're the only ones who haven't lost me. And that's not to say I haven't given everybody in this race equal consideration. I've already sold my PS4 and Xbox One and I don't know if they can win me back.

lmao that's awesome, I love how his cheeks are the shoulderpads

They haven't lost me. Many of Nintendo's problems are related to their failure to adapt to/accept/abide by changes in the industry—changes which have pushed me out (F2P, broken at launch, emphasis on graphics over gameplay, online-heavy focus, etc). I do think Nintendo could do a few things to improve, but they are defenders of the old guard in a sea-change I'm just not interested in.

If I buy Super Mario Bros 3, I own Super Mario Bros 3 on the Wii, the Wii U, the DS, and the 3DS. and whatever the next system is.

a virtual console library that is gigantic and completely connected through a unified account system. every single NES/SNES/GB/GBA/N64 game should be available on the virtual console. with online functionality implemented. (if I could play snes bomberman against my friends like 15 years ago on my Dell laptop, I should be able to do it on video game hardware today)

if I knew I could buy a SNES game today for $8 or whatever (which is honestly absurd when you look at prices of 1-2 year old games on something like PSN/Steam) and know when the Super Wii Nintendo System 2020 comes out in I'd still own that SNES game, I'd buy 100 games tomorrow.

They never lost me. I am yet to jump on a Wii U but that's more a supply problem, I have the demand already and await a $200-250ish Aussie price.

I still love my 3DS but they've lost me with their home consoles.

Make it so NX doesn't suck, and make the amiibo shit less prevalent in everything. This glorified DLC is sickening and cramming it down our throats by way of locking out already make content is a physical version of a mini-season pass. Why.

I think Sony has to lose me first, before that's even a possibility.
I rarely get more than one console each generation and Sony serves my interests better.

Nintendo is my second choice of console/handheld after PlayStation, and my third choice overall after PlayStation and PC. While this is below where Nintendo had been to me in the past where it was always my first choice, it is above where Xbox and Mobile are for me currently.

This seems oddly timed. They haven't been blue ocean-focused with the 3DS and Wii U at all. They're already more or less the core-focused company they were in the Gamecube era and earlier.

They "lost" me because I hit puberty and started wanting to play games on Xbox and PC.

They "won" me again when they released a number of games on the Wii U that was a pleasure to play and being the only current gen console to support backwards compatibility. It was especially great because I could go back and play the Wii games I missed.

I'm also biased because I work there :p

region free
decent hw specs
normal controller, not waggling, not screen, not any strange thing
Metroid
F-Zero
1080
Wave Race
Viewtiful Joe 3 (something a la Bayonetta 2)
a better 3rd party support

than I would start to consider it

Nintendo didn't loose me but I am not buying consoles/handheld day one.
No games = no day one purchase unless it has b/c and playing games from previous gen games in next gen devices doesn't incur a fee and it doesn't need previous gen controllers...

Unified account system.

Coming with the new rewards program and Iwata stated that a unified account system was happening since about a year or so ago.

Anyway, Nintendo never lost me. I still enjoy their games a lot and games are what matter most to me. I'm actually finding it harder to get into other systems because the games I see look unappealing to me. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

normal controller, not waggling, not screen, not any strange thing I use my Wii U exclusively with the Pro Controller. Nearly all games support it and very few dictate pure usage of the Gamepad
Metroid wait for E3
F-Zero wait for E3
1080 oh man, you'll be lucky. play the GameCube one via Nintendont on your Wii U instead
Wave Race see above
Viewtiful Joe 3 (something a la Bayonetta 2) you already have Bayonetta 2. Viewtiful Joe 3 is never gonna happen
a better 3rd party support lol

than I would start to consider it

I think I've outgrown Nintendo. It may be silly, but art style is a greatly important thing to me, and since now all their games have a clean, safe boring look they don't draw my attention much (though I do recognize the gameplay may be as great as ever). That's just a minor thing though. Nintendo just doesn't excite me much anymore. Maybe if I dig up my Wii and play some games that will change.

With their current hardware philosophy, they will only ever be "if I have every other console and a lot of spare money lying around" hardware choice.

You know, despite all the BS when dealing with Nintendo, they'd be hard-pressed to lose me as a customer.

I have some news for you.

You know exactly what he meant by unified account system; as in being able to access and download your digital games and such on multiple consoles/handhelds with ease.

I supposed its possible. I haven't purchased a Nintendo system for the last two generations and to be perfectly honest haven't really missed them. There is just too many other great games to fill the void. And this is after owning every Nintendo home console from the NES to the Game cube. I just have no interest in owning their hardware.

If I could buy Nintendo software without having to invest then their machine. If I could play Nintendo software on my Android tablet, PC or PS4 then yeah. They could win me back.
