Steam Controller trailer, $50

Whoa, they added a second stick.

I got a demo of it two years ago. I played Burnout Paradise and thought it worked great. That was two years ago and they've had time to improve it. The addition of the second stick is a great plus. I'm in.

Second stick? Where?

Doesn't the PC version of FFVII support mouse?

But it should work with basically anything. You just configure what suits you best. The trackpads can emulate multiple things.

That's what I wanted to know, if it can act just like a normal controller it would be great.

FFVII was just an example

If I was to purchase it on steam today, would I pay now or when it comes out?

The fine print says they go ahead and charge you at the time of purchase. But you have until it ships to cancel for a full refund. Kinda wished they'd just wait until it shipped like Amazon, but a full refund isn't bad either.

I'm looking forward to trying the controller, but I'm especially fascinated by the trailer itself. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that from Valve.

Fine print also states refunds are credited back to Steam Wallet, if I'm not mistaken.

How does the haptic feedback stuff work? Explain it to me like I'm a newborn

Rumble hasn't really changed since the N64 rumble pack. It traditionally uses a spinning motor to shake.

You can see it there in the bottom right.

The Steam controller uses a linear actuator. It's more like a piston that moves forward and back.

It will probably look something like this.

This should be able to create a much broader range of sensations than the old spinning weight, because it is much more precise. Think of it as higher resolution shaking.

How much of an actual difference it will make in games? Jurys still out on that one, but I want to try it.

Anyone else think they picked Game in the UK (for example) as they have a lot of walk in stores?, it will easily allow all stores to have demo pods to try the controller before buying it - this is something that will help a lot of people really, to see how it feels before putting some money down on one.

I'll take not having to spend extra money on batteries.

And the fact that the PS4 has a crappy battery doesn't mean the solution is AAA. You can, you know, use a good battery instead. The DS4 being crap doesn't make a case for using AA batteries.

I prefer AA's as I have a bunch of Eneloops I've accumulated over the years. But it's not a deal breaker either way. Not a big deal to have two DS4s and a charger dock. Though I prefer having less dock/charging cable clutter.

I think it may just be the quality of the video, but the aesthetics are a bit weird to me. The Steam logo in the middle sort of reminds me of the original Xbox controllers, though obviously not as big. Buttons look weird in general (I think the Xbox One buttons look weird, too). Trackpads, analog stick and triggers look fine.

As for uses, not really sure this is for me but for happy for the targeted audience to get a chance at a peripheral that might improve their gaming experience.

I'd like to try this, not fully sold on it yet thought. The DS4 is working just fine for me and i can use my mouse on its trackpad as well.. :)

Not really. I don't see a need to reinvent the wheel here.

They're suboptimal for a wide variety of genres, and particularly the burgeoning popular genres of the day (MOBAs, MMOs, puzzle/strategy games like Candy Crush or Clash of Clans, etc.) They don't have to go away or anything, but they're showing their age.

Definitely going to wait for widespread impressions first. Even then, I'm not sure how much this would apply to me. I have no real intention of playing pc games on the couch.

$16 for shipping? They didn't show that on the checkout screen... kind of shitty. Might cancel now and wait till I can buy one in Game stop or from amazon.

I ordered the controller at GAME. I'm a bit wary of climbing aboard the V1 train though.

Assuming there isn't a hardware issue, a lot can be done over Steam via updates, since most of it is software / firmware. I don't there's another controller with such a solution other than some mice and firmware updates. I heard eventually they will be opening up the controllers to third parties to do their own, so things like different designs and built in lithium ion batteries will probably be a thing

I guess they look suboptimal to me for anything that requires 3rd person world movement.

That small moment in the video when you see the user having to swipe his thumb multiple times to move Geralt really stood out.

I have on ordered now since I think it's the only controller compatible with Steam Link.

I wonder if the gyro allows you to enable Splatoon-like "third analog stick" type of control. It just works so well. Either way I'm was big fan of this controller back when they first announced it and I still am. Dope trailer. Shows exactly why the controller has so much potential.

See, my mind is blown at the thought of anyone considering dual analog as a standard for precision of all things.

Please don't put words in my mouth. Tradtional controllers =/= precision (I wasn't referring to controller precision Vs. a M&K, but rather subtle stick movement Vs. Trackpad swiping). Third person action games such as The Witcher, Batman, Assassins Creed etc are fine for a controller. For anything requiring precision, I use M&K.

Edit: As I said, I'm not really willing to spend $50 on a device that will undoubtedly be mixed / preferential in terms of comfort, rather than a revolution to current control schemes.

Very curious to try this, but I'll hold off for impressions & widespread game support. Definitely seems like the kind of things games will need to support natively for good results.
The entire point of the controller is that no games need to support it at all. It emulates a mouse and keyboard, so it's instantly compatible with every PC game ever provided you can find a reasonable button layout.

Preordered! Yes! Yes! Yes!

I have such a backlog of games waiting for this controller.

I also want to try using the pad as a wheel, which I've heard is possible but wasn't in the commercial.

Looks pretty interesting... I wonder if this is going to play tricks with me being a left-handed mouse/kb user (but standard gamepad config user)?

Already preordered via GAME because it releases almost a month earlier. Got my hopes pinned on this working out well enough for the lounge and mouse games. Also looking forward to seeing the dynamic firmware get tuned up over time

If it is as they said last time, it is bluetooth but with some sort of custom stack for reduced latency - you can use standard bluetooth and not get the reduced latency, but there should a dongle that comes with it should you want the reduced latency. Steam Machines apparently have that capability built in

So the dongle is basically for those who want to use this on a Windows machine?

I don't need it if I get a Steam Machine?

Although on the Alienware Steam Machine you can hide the dongle in the port beneath the console, so it's not intrusive anyway.

Did not know this. Pretty Cool.

If I preorder, do they charge me now or when it ships? If they wait until shipment I'll go ahead and preorder one so I can have it early.
