Steam Controller trailer, $50

I have a catalog of about 10 or so games waiting for this controller. Feels like I've been waiting forever.

I plan to use my Surface 3 to play said games for the time being. If the controller works well and I never once have to get up from my couch and start frustratingly mousing around the TV I'll be happy.

Could potentially get me back into PC gaming.

This is something I have always dreamed of having as I love using a controller but I can't get used to the 'keyboard' part of the KB+M control scheme.

If the compatibility is as good as an Xbox 360/Xbox One controller, day fucking one for me.

Edit:

Day one it is lol.

It works with everything since it can mimic a KB/M.

Even old games like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex will work, no problem.

It's the solution I've been waiting for since hooking up my PC to my TV.

I'm so stoked for this. Never again will I have to ask if a new PC game has controller support. They all do!

When I come into these threads, people have difficulty understanding that this is the main reason for the controllers existence.

There are literally thousands of games that aren't covered by xinput. Can I play System Shock with a controller? Warcraft? Hearthstone? Nope. Now I can.

I am going to buy the steam link and controller so i can sit in front of my tv playing pc games.

Finally have a use for 4K TVs. This is gonna be good.

I bet Steam Controller 2.0 drops the analogue. As you can see even in this thread people need baby steps to something different.

Don't you love design predicated by ignorance?

Haha. I ordered one then immediately remembered that I'll be living elsewhere by October once I find an apartment. I wonder what their policy on changing shipping addresses is.

I'm surprised at the enthusiastic reception of the device in this thread. It still doesn't look intuitive to me, but I probably thought the same thing about analogue controls the first time I saw them on N64.

I really need to try it for myself.

I wouldn't go thaaaaat far. The community bindings are pretty great, but there are still clumsy issues when manually binding keys vs a game designed with controller support in mind. Properly supporting controllers, especially in menus, will still be important on the developer side.

Even in retrospect the N64 controller is fucking ridiculous though. The analog stick was fine though. Sorta, octagonal gate and missing a second, but otherwise alright.

Same here. I'm sure they'll let us change the address provided it isn't right before it ships.

Honestly Ill still likely use a traditional controller but its nice to have alternatives.

I could definitely see a bunch of games that would benefit from this.

Yeah when I had my HTPC running SteamOS you could tell how essential the Steam Controller is to that whole initiative. Just not having to keep a keyboard/touchpad handy to start up games lacking full controller support is a huge improvement.

I bet they won't. I bet that people soon realize that tap and drag isn't a substitute for the movements and feel of a physical analog stick. This is a laptop trackpad morphed into a handheld controller, all the force/haptic feedback in the world couldn't replace physical, moving parts.

I didn't like it all that much after trying it out with Dying Light at PAX East, but I'm willing to give it a shot. The learning curve must be pretty big and I didn't get a chance to get used to it in just 10 minutes of gameplay.

Gaming with a trackpad. Yeah, no. There's absolutely no substitute for a second analog stick.

Looked crazy awkward having to slide around just to rotate the camera in The Witcher 3. It's like playing a 3D game on my macbook trackpad.

Joke post? That is same thing as saying I will use my middle finger to move the analog stick on a 360 controller.

Fuck yeah! Cant wait for this. Jugling the keyboard mouse and gamepad from the couch is getting old.

the community layout is the killer feature I'm buying this for. Can't wait for people to set up the controls for old games like the Tomb Raider or Legacy of Kain series

You can play city building games that are as KB/M heavy as you can get without issue. It's right there in the commercial.

As Grief said, there are thousands of games that will never get controller support. They will work with the Steam Controller.

Trying to pre-order a Steam Link and a Controller from Gamestop.com but it keeps giving me an error that doesn't say anymore than "OrderSubmissionError" when I go to finalize my payment.

Anyone else getting this? I'm number 54 in the livechat support que. -_-

So is the shopping cart broken for everyone? Or just me? I'd rather order from Steam and use Steam wallet funds than from GameStop. I'm in the US.

I've got beyond good and evil from a seam sale, never played because Kb/m only. October is gonna be good

Will I be able to cold boot my PC with this? Hate getting off my couch to do this every time (yes, I'm that lazy). And the thing keeps randomly waking up from sleep mode no matter what I do so I sort of gave up on that and shut it down completely.

Then by all means jump in. You can actually thumb a trackpad. It controls poorly.

In fact, it controls similar like it shows with camera controls in the trailer with the Witcher 3. Tap and drag, tap and drag. I'll give people 2 days before they are utterly sick of it and put the thing back into 'simulate analog stick mode'.

I thought the early birds would go a lot faster. I am sort of worried that some of these are simply going to get moved to the November date. Anyways, my order is in for both.

Thanks.

I think it must help that the pages Steam links to on EBgames is broken, will just redirect you to the page you're on rather than send you to the order screen. You have to search for the item manually on the store to get it to show up.

Damn... Just read that this was for pre-orders and they would still be limited? Is either Steam or GameStop still taking orders for October 16?

The physical analog sticks are only good because of features like auto aim. With the STEAM controller you can use skill, not to mention it's better for PC genres like RTS.

Is there some kind of crazy demand for this? I ordered directly from Steam about an hour ago using steam wallet funds and it went fine.
I was a little worried cause I had to run out and get a steam card to cover the cost.

Maybe I wasn't being paranoid after all.

Suprising since the controller and the steam machine seem to garner a lot of hate but now people seem to be jumping on the controller at least.
Unless some ebay users are taking note of the limited early supply and are hoarding for some reason.

Valve amiibo.

Both are right now, but I don't know how long that will last for. The general release date after that is 10th November

Charge when it ships or charge now?

Now on Steam, but when it ships for practically every retailer
