I've only got a 37" 720p TV, but i've been ok with it. I Monster Hunter on the Wii U was a mess though.
There's also a very real option of buying and playing a different game. The solution is to either sit closer to the TV or get a TV that is appropriate for the viewing distance.
The fact that they thought the original version was acceptable suggests that the devs had little regard for anyone that wasn't playing with a monitor on a desk, or a large TV in a dorm room.
Right. So you're telling me that your cynicism tells you that people never admit their mistakes and never seeks to correct them even after tons of fans ask them to. And this is of course ignoring the fact that, again, they've already said that they're working on fixing it.
Jesus christ.
Only problem with this is that it seemed to be an afterthought. How can anyone have tested this and thought this wasn't a problem unless they only tested on a monitor at a desk?
Because they most definitely just play-tested it on computers. It's not too uncommon at all, especially not for a studio that's invested so much into PC games previously.
If you're on ps4 do this http://kotaku.com/legally-blind-gamer-can-finally-enjoy-more-ps4-games-1695264255
Never knew about it until today and it's awesome
This is an awful response, and a horrible pressure to put on consumers. Your 40" TV is already very large. It's not you, it's the poorly planned interface.I sit 6 feet away from a 40" TV, and have not had this problem in other games.

I still would like a bigger TV though, maybe 50" would be the sweet spot...
All text is now just a tiny bit bigger than it was. No slider sadly, and no option to go back to the way it was for those who felt it was already fine.
It's big enough for me now, I tried reading characters bios and entries for the bestiary (the sections I struggled the most with) and it's just the right size for my TV/distance, but I'm not sure it will please everyone, especially those who couldn't read anything at all, because it's a small increase in text size.
I managed to take a screenshot of the new size in the glossary. PC at 1080p.It was really small for me before, so this doesn't sound great, but I'll check it out this weekend and hopefully its ok, I really want to play this game
Can anyone report if the patch really makes a difference?

Unfortunately subtitles are still the same size btw. The most noticeable increase is probably in the item descriptions, crafting pages, alchemy and such. I think the best course of action at this point for those still struggling would be to try and decrease in some way the distance between them and the TV. It's what I did before the patch and again after the patch today, because after a few hours of playing I feel the text size is actually still too small for me, most of the time anyway.
Honestly, this is an issue I've had with modern games which are waaay too keen on using small fonts for 'clean UIs'. Yeah it looks pretty, but my eyesight is garbage and I hate squinting.
The problem with increasing the font size for subtitles in this game is that often the subtitles carry on one sentence after another with no break at all. With a bigger font you're going to end up with 3, 4 or more lines of subtitles on the screen. The usability isn't going to see an effective increase. It's just a disaster all around. They cheaped out on the timing and line breaking of subtitles as video games often do.
