They should have just added a character from Fire Emblem: If that was a sword user. Then at least it would be a "new" character.

It's kind of crazy, I was just playing Super Street Fighter IV 3D as Ryu in arcade mode 5 minutes ago and I come on GAF to find this reveal.

A multi-platform title that originally launched in arcades and was released on practically everything but your toaster is justification? I guess we should get Doom guy in the game then, I mean it WAS on the Nintendo 64.

Apples and oranges. Ness is a Nintendo character and Smash Bros is a game that celebrates Nintendo's wide history of IPs. Ryu isn't a Nintendo character, and unlike Sonic or Megaman his history of featuring in Nintendo exclusive products in almost nill. I'd argue that Snake also didn't really deserve a spot, but at the very least The Twin Snakes was still mildly recent when Brawl came out.

Well the SNES version of SFII was easily the most popular. It's the one everyone remembers playing and I would even go so far as to call it the definitive version of that game. You also had SFIV as a launch title on 3DS which did well in terms of reviews and sold over 1 million units.

Like, we have Pac Man in sm4sh. I think the only games he has on Nintendo systems are the 3D Pacman ones. I don't even think the original arcade Pac Man can be found anywhere on a Nintendo system. But sm4sh was co-developed by Namco so i think they were just throwing them a bone.

Anyway, I do see what you mean about the IP/3rd party issue. From what I remember Snake was put in Brawl because Kojima begged him to be put in melee but there was no time so they put him in brawl instead. I still think Ryu's got stronger ties to Nintendo than most capcom characters. (except phoenix wright)

SFII sold 12 million on SNES, turned SF into an important franchise, and was a major exclusive during the 16 bit era. We wouldn't even have Smash if SFII didn't take off on SNES.

Since when was it exclusive? I had it on the Mega Drive way back in the day. Hell I didn't even know a single person who owned it on the SNES.

For me, personally, unless said character has at least a couple of exclusive titles under the belt within the last decade they don't really have strong enough ties with Nintendo to be featured in Smash over the multitude of Nintendo IPs that aren't represented yet. Inkling being a trophy and Ice Climbers still getting the shaft while Ryu gets a slot despite having no exclusive presence in like, forever, doesn't seem right.

Awesome to see Ryu there! Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Megaman, and now Ryu. Just a game of icons. Don't care all that much about Roy. Honestly, he (and Marth kinda) was just kind of "there" for me during the Melee days. =P

Man do I feel bad for Sakurai. Certainly takes some of the wind out of tomorrow's presentation.

I'm plenty willing to hear people talk about SF2's significance, but I really dont think Smash is a fruit of the Street Fighter tree

Some of the logic being displayed against Ryu's inclusion is really strange when one considers the history of the franchise.

Ryu also puts to rest the apparent rule of one character per third party. Maybe characters like Eggman now have a shot?

They can't JUST put in Ryu without anything else relating to Street Fighter releasing on Wii U, right?

?

I spent too much time on that Miiverse picture. They HAVE to port it.

Time for another Sega rep.

Bill Trinen can just get Other Ocean like Gio Corsi did for the PS4 version!

Rhythm Heaven music?! But no new Rhythm Heaven stage...? Huh, why would that be in there...? Wait, this isn't the first time a patch has added music in an update for future content...

Calling it now. Rhythm Heaven music was added because we're going to be getting a Rhythm Heaven character and stage in a future update! C'mon, Chorus Kids reveal!!

People may be disappointed because the data from the update has spoiled the reveals from the Smash Bros. presentation, but remember, that's only the content that will be made available now... Surely there's going to be at least one reveal for future content, too!

I'm guessing to thank Capcom for putting Street Fighter and Monster Hunter on 3ds

I really think that people try to find politics where there probably aren't any.

Ryu is an iconic fighting character. Smash Bros. is an iconic fighting series. Nintendo and Capcom have always enjoyed a good relationship.

Sakurai probably just picked up the phone to Capcom.

Dang that stage looks sick!! I hope it doesn't have any shitty hazards so that we can add it in to the rotation of sm4sh stages that we don't have to play on omega mode.

That's very true. Look how much money Capcom and Nintendo make together with just Monster Hunter.

How come the reddit leaker didn't mention miiverse stage? Is it a separate update they didn't get?

Still awaiting smash bros custom moves for the dlc fighters..!
