Dark Souls 3 announced (Early 2016, PC/PS4/XB1, Miyazaki Directing)

I'm convinced Miyazaki was not that involved in this game. I think they just plastered his name there to get people excited.

Why do I think this? The CG trailer tells the tale. In the trailer, we see a Giant King with a hole for a face. This is a DIRECT connection to Dark Souls 2, a game Miyazaki had nothing to do with, which shows.
Miyazaki is a genius, a visionary. Demon's, Dark and Bloodborne all have a distinct Miyazaki touch, something Dark Souls 2 lacks.

The point is, if Miyazaki was directing this game, he would never borrow from a lesser entry like DS2. He would never borrow from the "lesser vision" of his subordinates. Because,as I said, he is a visionary, one of the greats. It makes no sense for him to stoop to such low levels. It's beneath him, if you will.

The giant in the trailer gives it away. Miyazaki is not directing. And the reason is simple: Miyazaki doesn't need help from the lesser minds.

...The mere notion of Miyazaki actually using anything from the clusterfuck of the lore that is DS2...
Preposterous.

You have a point.

After we've had a chance to play the game it'll be self evident if Miyazaki was directing or not. It's called confirmation bias.

I did not see the packshot posted earlier:

did someone point out that the character seems burining from the inside like the giant from the trailer?

Mixed feelings about this.

It's obviously a Dark Souls game but they really needed to make it clear that they were making a clear break from the themes and characters of the second game. In all honesty they were just not as cool as the first game.

Ideally to maximise hypu I would have liked them to finish by going full circle and do a game that was set before Gwyn's age of fire. But that could be double edged and retroactively ruin the mystery of the original.

Dark Souls would really be better off with faster combat I'd say. Of course it can have much more variety in play styles, but I can't go back to this slow combat style.
Then don't. No one is forcing you!

I for one don't consider DS combat "clunky", I consider it deliberate, and I like that.

Big lol at this post....
Even with Miyazaki it's still a sequel and not a new franchise (a new one with most/some gameplay of previous one)
It explains the similarities and contination of the franchise lore.
You can deduce nothing from that.

Ds1 rolling was fine. It was that you could only roll in forward back left or right. There wasnt an 8 way roll/Dodge like in BB and Ds2. BB does the 8way dodge much better than Ds2 though because the control is tighter and there's more weight to your character, which doesnt make it feel like your moving all willy nilly all over the place.

Again BB has 8 way dodging rolling, but its much tighter than Ds2s version. Go back and play bloodborne you can dodge northeast, southeast as well. The animation is just tighter and keeps the player facing the enemy so they can get right back in quickly.

Okay bloodborne isn't just 4 directions, but it's still less than DS2, which isn't 8way, it's full analog. DS2 gives you the exact same roll controls when locked on that you get when you're not. BB's dodge is not as powerful as that. The dash is fast, but not as strong as the roll in BB.

Dark Souls controlled smoother and more precisely than DS2, DS2 was floaty, and it's Parry was nonsense, rough animations and hitboxes and all that.

DS2 had better rolling just because of the 8 way direction, everything else about rolling was eh.

Anyway, enough of that, so it was confirmed Miyazaki is directing Dark Souls III? That melting sun implied as much but I am super glad to hear.

Even if it is there are plenty of people that think similarly. The DS2 hate and Miyazaki worship brought out a lot of weirdness in people over the past year.

There are also plenty of people who think differently. There're a lot of differences between DS2 and DS1, and it's hardly unreasonable to think the second game falls far short of the first.

Then you start to wonder why, and one of the possible reasons is a change in director / staff.

I agree that blind Miyazaki worship isn't the best viewpoint from which to assess games, but I absolutely loathe when people think that the reason people dislike DS2 is that it was made by a different team. That's merely a potential cause of the numerous symptoms that originate from the game itself.

TL;DR:

Purported crazy logic:
Miyazaki is super great -> Dark Souls 2 isn't made by Miyazaki -> Dark Souls 2 is a weak sequel to Dark Souls 1

Actual (at least, my) logic:
Dark Souls 2 is a weak sequel to Dark Souls 1 -> Dark Souls 2 isn't made by Miyazaki -> Perhaps Miyazaki is the "secret sauce" that has made the Souls series so beloved?

The biggest problem DS2 had was not the director but the messy development the game had. DLC shows the team is capable.

so the "PC version is later" early rumours were complete bullshit then?

it was bizarre that the platform that sold a fuckton of DS2 would not see a day 1 release
