Sony is Building a Hostage Crisis!!!!! (List of Games to Kickstarter)

I think I'd be okay with this as long as it's only left to games on the edge.
A game like Uncharted should not be crowdfunded.
A game like Shenmue that likely may not have had any other chance of popping up, though, that'd be awesome.

It was more of a joke than anything. But I do think this is a practice that doesn't need to become a norm for them.
So trolling. Got it. Solid contribution indeed.

I'm ok with this, TBH. People will back games they want, and it'll end up being similar to preordering but could end up with heavy discounts. And who knows, maybe some games that would otherwise never get made come out of this. Don't see a problem here.

Honestly this is a very slippery slope to go down. Shenmue 3 is one thing, but I hope we don't see the random IPs that probably could be financially viable on their own accord kickstarted because- "Why not?"

If the end backer gets a game they've lusted after for a decade for $29 and enough people back it to hit the Sony funding trigger, I'm not seeing this 'slippery slope' that is continually being thrown up. Everything on GAF seems to be a slippery slope and context is everything. Shenmue would NOT have been made without that show of faith and enough people wanted it to happen. You mention financially viable IPs getting thrown in the mix? Don't back them. Its very simple.

If you get a copy of the game at a discounted backing tier regardless for a game you would have insta-bought anyway then equally I'm not seeing a problem.

A genuine Crazy Taxi for PS4
Daytona USA 3
Virtua Fighter 6
New Virtua Cop
Model 2 / Model 3 Arcade board comprehensive collection

A decade I've wanted the above. They aren't happening on their own. Give me a chance to put my money where my mouth is Sony / Sega and let fellow fans do the same.

For you.
And it wouldn't be a problem but development can fall through and you won't get the game or your money back.

Actually, you will. By the rules of Kickstarter, you have every right to get your money back if a project fails. Of course, but it can be a bit of a hassle and with many projects it's not really possible.
But in a project with major publisher backing behind it? Come on now.

That is the nature of being an investor. You are no longer a consumer, but an investor.

Calling it an investment is a misnomer, because you don't own anything in return; a goodwill donation is closer to the nature of crowdfunding, where you *might* get something you want in return down the line.

1. DLC
2. "Exclusive preorder bonuses"
3. On disc content

And a plethora of other examples of publishers locking things behind premium paywalls nickel and diming consumers. Gamers are a very passionate bunch, I just don't want to see us as a community exploited. There are those of us well to do who can afford to submit one thousand dollars to Shenmue 3 and the ilk, but this Kickstarter philosophy can be either really amazing or really awful, and so far I'm not liking the odds where I trust a mega corporation with enough integrity to not ape me of all my income.

That happens and will always happen regardless of KSer.

We are to blame since we vote with our wallets.

You really think that Sony supported crowdfunding campaigns would not deliver the games people put money on already? Sorry, but this isn't the same as a typical KS where they aren't tied to a major corp that can have their multi-million+ dollar image completely destroyed by a stunt like that. I think it'll be fine.

Why should Sony crowdfund own and healthy IPs?

They are losing money in that process if they are using Kickstarter with the 5 provision and the rewards and not going the traditional route.

Wait. So Suikoden 6 by Murayama has a chance to become a REALITY?

Serious?

What do you want sony? Ask me, and it will be done.

Read the KSer rules. You become an investor. You are investing in someones else's company.

Some have kickback and returns on sales to their investors from crowd funding. Project Cars being the most recent.

Yep.

Phantasy Star Online, PLEASE.

Megaman Legends 3, PLEASE.

Ape Escape, PLEASE. (This is a Sony one, so I guess doesn't really count)

Chrono Trigger something, PLEASE.

Legend of Dragoon something, PLEASE. (Also, Sony)

These are my demands. =)

And if this were to happen, there would no doubt be legal action taken by consumers and/or Kickstarter themselves.

Isn't there really no teeth from KickStarter? The can chide you but when you put money into a kickstarter you are essentially donating with the hope of getting something.

They aren't bilking anyone. It is volunteery, is it not?

So, if they put a wipeout kickstarter up and no one backs it, you know the game is truly dead. If they out MML3 up and it gets funded, you know it's actually coming with published support. So I see no downside with this.

It's extortion, a hostage situation. "Give us X dollars or you'll never see your favourite game again!" All that would be missing is for the Kickstarter to have a picture of the franchise hero with a beaten face holding up a picture of a recent newspaper to really bring the reality into the situation there.

And the fact that it's being discussed to happen again alone tells me everything I need to know about how this is going to turn out. What defines a "risky" idea for a game will be stretched thinner and thinner and thinner.

Isn't CyberConnect2 thinking about an HD remake of the first game?

They've hinted at a game. They never clarified if it was an HD remake or a sequel. They have 3 games in development, currently, that we know of. A VR game, a photo realistic game and an open world game.

I don't believe them. For some reason, I think Sony didn't expect the success of Shenmue and is just looking for a way to keep the ride afloat for now.

Yyyyyyep.

All that "oh come on, it's just a one-off, publishers wouldn't bilk us for cash like that repeatedly" starts to come off as pretty silly now, doesn't it?

Well, first a publisher would have to create a Kickstarter, no? That's not what happeneded here however. All the money of the Kickstarter is going to YS.Net.

I do find amusing that people really believe that Sony is somehow getting money directly out of this Kickstarter. Sure man, a couple of million dollars would clearly make a huge ass difference to them. Sure.

Crazy idea...what if Sony just funded the games?

Where do these funding concern trolls creep out from ?

Concerns, about funding.

About funding.

You're already paying for the game.

30$ for freakin' shenmue 3.

Please crawl back to whatever cave you came out of.

I'd vote this. I'd put a few hundred dollars for this. There's no chance in hell though, for a wide variety of reason....
The producer is working on a new Front Mission for Square right now.

There was a ChromeHounds like game on KickStarter called MAV, it's on steam now and it's about to go to beta soon

To those unhappy about that type of practice: you pledge or you don't, nobody is forcing you to invest in a kickstarter project.

Getting tired of hearing how unscrupulous this all is. How unethical it is to want to get the ball rolling to create games that otherwise would never be? Yeah in a perfect world these publishers would run around with their magic wands proclaiming "You get millions to develop the game! And you get millions! And you! And you!"

So what's the alternative? We all have these giant wish lists and they keep getting bigger and bigger and nothing is ever done to make them a reality. But at least we made a stand and said "NO! This shall not be!" for whatever silly reason. Thanks, slippery slopers.

We had Suikoden Tierkreis in 2008, which was not that great.

It was ok game, not a bad game by any stretch.

But then again I want the continuation of 27 true rune saga.

Sony if you pull this shit and make Suikoden 6 into reality, then fuck you will be forever my hero.

It's been 9 years since we saw legit suikoden saga people. 9. fucking. years. 9! NINE! It skipped the entire generation!

It's a little strange, but there are plenty of IPs and talented veterans out there that people want to see. If they want to help kickstart something from Sakaguchi, Avellone, etc., or some dead IP that people have been asking for then fuck it why not?
