Batman AK PC Perf Thread of DARKNESS, NO SETTINGS [30fps cap / intro removal in OP]

Just curious, is this video common and what mostly everyone is experiencing while driving the Batmobile?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86g8UtO87h0

Similar to what you're getting? Constant drops to 0-5 fps or is the video an extreme example?

I think that's an extreme example, but that is how frequently the slowdowns are. I'll drop to 20 with motion blur when I swing the camera around in the batmobile.

The worse is when it switches to a cinematic, i have dropped below 20 before on that

Remember when gamespot gave this game a 7/10 and every fanboy jumped on them for not rating it as 11 out of 10 even though they didn't play the game. (referring to subtitle) Rocksteady should not be forgiven on this
gamespot rated the ps4 version, which seems to be fine
the existence of a shitty version shouldn't negatively reflect on the good version imo as long as the issues with the shitty version are also clear and mentioned somewhere

Managed to play for 2-3 hours straight without there being any real problems performance wise. At 1440p (DSR) my FPS is sitting at 65 with the lowest drops being in the 50's but with G-SYNC it's been pretty smooth.

My main grip is the textures not popping up properly. Am I the only one getting it at every single location that I go too? It's extremely jarring and takes forever for the texture to even pop up. Feels like I'm looking at a PS3 game whenever it happens.

You are not the only one, the game was terrible garbage collection and you vram is probably full or near full the entire time. Hence the lack of loaded textures.

My game looks exactly like yours in that regard.

there are alot of issues with this port... memory management is at the top of that list for me.

Got it free with an Nvidia card and I still feel cheated.

You guys getting those textures.... try resetting your FPS limit to 30 and see if it still happens. I did that and revisited similar areas and the textures loaded in fine.

Known issues aside, has there been a way to turn off chromatic aberration?

nope :(

This game is a monster when it comes to memory.

I've noticed a peak of 7GB VRAM usage on my Titan X maxed out at 3k resolution. Seems to sustain about 6.5GBs gliding around the city.

How could 970 owners report 5GB of VRAM usage, when their cards only have effectively 3.5GB?

Anything is possible with this game

I meant the Titan. Thanks for pointing that out

I know this off-topic, but this Polygon article is as lazy as this port:

Polygon said:
Yesterday morning, developer Rocksteady Studios took to the game's official support forum to note they were aware of the issues and working closely with "our external PC development partner to make sure these issues get resolved as quickly as possible."

It remains unclear who the third-party developer was that worked on the PC version of Arkham Knight

What? Polygon, c'mon. It says Iron Galaxy in the credits.

nope :(

Yeah but then you have the problem of... a 30fps limited game :(

Sigh... these vram issues are killing my desire to play tonight

Yeah, I see that now. Who the hell made that comparison? Would haven't surprised me, though.

Some guy on eurogamer posted that. I assumed that he'd done it by loading the games from the start but apparently he was much further along in the story mode on PS4. My bad for not checking before I posted it.

I've finally managed to download the game for the second time (the first one I screwed everything up by trying to check the game cache - I know this error has been fixed, but I'm not falling for that again). To be honest, the game seems to run pretty smoothly on my configuration (never drops below 30 fps, except in the infamous Batmobile scene where it runs at 25-26 fps). Of course though, since such an happy ending would seem a bit unfair, I'm forbidden from enjoying this game because of the black screen plague affecting my gpu (a Sapphire R9 290 4 GB, reference design).

By the way, I'm running the game on this rig:

i5 4670k @ 4.5 GHz
8GB RAM
Sapphire R9 290 4GB w/ AMD Catalyst™ Driver 15.6 Beta
Win 8.1 Pro 64 Bit

This is similar to what I was getting until I realised AMD had mislabelled their patches and I had installed the Win 8.1 on my Win 7 machine. After a full uninstall and getting the correct drivers those extreme dips went away.

Yeah I can also confirm that textures pop in quicker if you leave it capped at 30.

You can see why they capped it in the first place.

well, this port is never going to get DX12, they obviously don't care THAT much. 2-3 patches at best and after last DLC is out, they will be leaving it.

Guys rly, i think it will be needed a enormous effort to fix and put this game in a AAA level title which it seems it is on the consoles... (console made game) so i dnt think we will ever have a miraculous patch that will fix this terrible disrespectful pc release ever... don't wanna jinx anything here, just i don't believe in miracles...

Black screens? just go into CCC and drop your mem by increments of 25mhz, 50mhz does it for most people.
Also disable any kind of HW accel, flash or browser, this should stop any black screen issues cold.

Nah happened to me too. A whole cliff wouldn't load in for me until I got right up on it. The little things like electric box, door and window frames never load in.

i7-4790K 4.0GHz
2x GTX 970
16GB RAM
All settings maxed

I'm not noticing any framerate issues, and haven't had any crashes. The only issue I've noticed was a couple of low LOD textures. But apart from that, performance seems fine.

Here's what I tried to make it work:
  • Disabled SLI. Set PhysX to be on 2nd GPU
  • Installed game on SSD
  • Left 30FPS cap on

Obviously 30fps isn't ideal. But the game is totally playable for me, and it hasn't detracted from my enjoyment of it.

What's really fascinating about this is that it actually reminds me of old school PC gaming. I remember playing Crusader No Remorse on a 486dx2/66 and getting stuttering like that when things would explore. It was very common for lots of HDD access interrupting games back in the day. Heck, I remember in Deus Ex, when things would explode, I'd often miss half the explosion due to this. I use to think "man, those explosions must be AMAZING if it's causing performance to dip like this". Ahhh, memories.

Truth be told, the performance in this game is actually right in line with how Half-Life 2 ran at launch. Loads of stuttering that could become just as severe, very long loading times, and unstable frame-rates. This was on, for the time, solid hardware (Pentium 4 3.6GHz + 6800GT).

It's perfect now but, at launch, it was just as bad as Arkham Knight in that regard. It was just as unacceptable to me then as it is now, though, but others seemed less bothered by it. Of course, things WERE a bit different back then indeed. We expect better these days. Just had to chuckle to myself when thinking back to those days.

In 2015, Arkham Knight PC is 100% unacceptable.

That's so weird. Maybe the streaming thread doesn't have high enough priority when there's too many frames to render? Awful.

Lots of the post processing appears to be in the depth of field pass, and turning that off from the ini will remove CA as well. But it also removes a shit ton of other stuff.
In theory you could probably turn that off and then add the other effects back in with master effect and such, but I don't know if anyone is crazy enough to do that.

Thanks for the tips :)

Unfortunately, the memory trick doesn't seem to work for me. I've already tried many times in the past: the gpu becomes stable for something like a week, then the problem shows up again.

I'm definitely gonna try with the HW accel though.

With the MaxFPS edit and texture issues, what are you guys setting it to? I had mine at 0 last night that disables the in-game limiter completely and was using Afterburner instead, and I could be completely wrong on this, but I don't seem to remember noticing any low detail textures or pop in. Going to double check it now, so I'll edit if I'm completely wrong, but thought it worth throwing out there.

Ehhh... I'll just wait for the main problems to be fixed then. Good thing I'll get to play the game in September when I go back to uni, hopefully everything will be fixed by then.

Regarding that DX10 thing, I'm fairly certain it's only Smoke and Paper that do it. I can't run MSI Afterburner OSD with those two on for some reason, works fine with rain and light shafts though.

AHAH! so this explains the issue i been having not been able to get MSI AB to show inside the game. i eventually figured it out by disabling GW!

So to confirm and this is 100% correct for me, if i disable GW then MSI overlays shows, if i enable then it disappears. DX10 = WTF!

ok so now im really PISSED! devs go fuck urself
