DS4 build quality is garbage. Why would Sony make such a cheap controller?

I've owned every playstation console and never had to rebuy controllers even back when I could only afford the one it came with when I was a teenager. Now I buy two day 1 just like with every console I buy and both my DS4s are falling apart already. My issues im experiencing. These controllers have never been thrown or treated outside the norm.

Triggers are sticking randomly. Gotta love playing an fps and suddenly being stuck in ADS mode or letting off a shotgun shot when you have limited ammo.

charge life is pathetically short. I'm getting less than 4 hour play time on my controllers now. Their charge life is ridiculous. This is with the LED on dim setting.

The sticks are shredding. This isn't really a huge issue but I mean really Sony? Did you not expect people to use your controllers?

Controller body panels don't fit together smoothly. Screams made on the super cheap.

It's pretty annoying paying a hefty amount for a controller that's garbage right out of the box.

Edit: on comparison the Xbox one controller feels much more robust and quality. However it's barely been used so I can't really say much more than that for my personal experience.

Agreed, I'm disappointed with the DS4 too. I don't even bother playing OlliOlli 2 because of the sticks rubbing off

Yeah, the build quality is really atrocious, especially the sticks. Need to replace them when I have the time.

Contact Sony support for a warranty on your controllers? Also, if you bought using a credit card, contact your credit card company for the extended warranty (if your card has it).

Keeps production costs down, I guess.

Fucking bullshit that controllers are $74.99 in Canada, though. There's probably $15 worth of materials in one... If that.

Yikes. Yeah I don't mind paying for a controller but I expect the money I pay to actually go into the controller I'm buying with quality parts. The ds4 gives me the same feels I got when I had to buy the damn $100 launch wifi dongle for the x360.

To sell you a 399$ PS4 in 2013.

The DS4 is garbage. Wish you cpuld use the Xbo or Wii U Pro controller instead.

The DS4 has zero problems... now that Nintendo Gamepad thing with the pathetic 4/5 hour battery life is the real hell's spawn.

The battery life, the shitty analogue sticks and the triggers are easily the biggest problems with it.

I've not had issues with the triggers themselves but it's easy to see how more intense players could have issues with them depending on what games you play.

I can't play GTA or Driveclub right now because of right trigger issues. I know I can remap the controls but the original controls are what work best for me so I choose not to play them instead.

Eventually I will buy a new one but I have switched and do most of my gaming on my xbone now. Hopefully it's controller lasts a bit longer!

Mine is fine after extensive use. But I take care of my things. Never handle them with anything on my hands, never use force on them etc etc.

One of my DS3s got an slight upward sticking on the left stick after 4 years or so, but that is all.

I'm day one so pretty sure they are both out of warranty. I'm just replacing them with modded specialty controllers (taller sticks, buttons on bottom).

Got my PS4 three weeks ago and so far no problem with DS4.

Maybe it's a problem with early DS4.

Took about a year of use for mine to turn into crap balls.

Ok yes the wiiu pad out of the box is worse than the ds4 out of the box battery life. But i swear my controllers are dying even quicker than a wiiu pad out of the box now.

Sorry for your issues, bro. I understand to reach $399 they gotta cut corners somewhere, but this is a real annoying problem. I used some analog stick covers and my thumbsticks have been working fine ever since. The triggers can also be unstuck and the battery life be made longer if you're willing to do some surgery on your DS4 and get a cheap battery off Amazon.

I bought the thumbstick covers as a precaution, but I've had my DS4s for 6 months with no issues.

I must be one of the lucky ones. Launch controller. Still like new. Use grip it's on the sticks anyway always have done even last gen. No sticking etc. Only trouble I have with them is the shitty battery life. Drains like hell on batman and did on tomb raider too.

Terrible controller, one of the worst for me. I wish they would at least make an attempt to try new sticks or better r2 that doesn't stop working.

I still don't understand what you people are doing to your controllers. I'm still using the same controller since launch, minimum 2 hrs a day, and the sticks are still totally fine.

I have a launch one and the only issue I've had with it is the shitty battery life. Yeah, it's pretty bad, especially after the PS3's great battery life.

I hate playing GTAV because the touch pad. Using the left analog stick, my thumb will sometimes barely touch the touch pad and draw out a shotgun or something while I'm on a mission, which can fuck things up.

The battery life and the triggers are my main grip with it. Why the hell does it die so fast when you have the Xbone controller lasting for days on two Double A batteries? Amazes that they STILL have yet to give us an option to completely turn off the bar light.

I have this shitty third party USB SNES controller. The plastic feels about as thick as the DS4's... But it costed like $10.

My DS4 analogs are already fucked. I'm waiting on Xbox One analogs via post, but it's ridiculous I even have to. I got rid of my PS4 after I beat Bloodborne, so it's just my 2P PC controller and it still managed to get the analogs wrecked, and the R2 squeaking. :|

Don't the more recent versions have better build quality? I bought my PS4 when TLoU came out, and aside from the crappy battery life I've had no issues with my controller. Not that I've used it thát much, but still, after some intense games like Bloodborne I've yet to run into any real issues.

New controllers aren't any better or don't have different sticks

Idk man. I actually really like the DS4. I know it's had a lot of reported problems but mine has been fine. I just bought the PS1 themed one as well because I actually prefer the DS4 to XBones controller.

My only problem is the abysmal battery life. Same for the WiiU gamepad. I actually have a charger with both types of cables octopussying out of and outlet behind my chair so I can charge and still play for longer than a few hours. Playing FFXIV on a DS4 on my PC and it was a struggle before I rigged this up and that is with the damn light bar and rumble turned off.

I might as well now. I thought about doing this in the past but was afraid I'd break them. Now they are pretty far gone anyways!

The only actual difference is the matte buttons. Anything else noted is a placebo effect from having a new controller.

I think they are.
My original controller has problems with the trackpad which doesn't seem to function anymore. Clicks still register, but swipes won't.
I also had to replace the thumbtacks a couple of months back.

I also have a new white controller and I switch between both as the other is charging.

Zero problems with the white one so far and it's already 8-9 months old.

Get the official extended battery pack for the Wii U. It easily doubles the battery life as I get between 8-12 hours playtime now.

My only gripe is with the thumb sticks wearing out w/ the early ones. Battery life isn't a problem since I usually charge after each session. I've had L1 not decompress properly but it seemed to have sorted itself out.

Have two DS4s since release and haven't had a single problem with either one. And I'm not overly careful about how I handle my controllers.

So build quality wise I think they're excellent.

When I had a PS4 a year ago my right stick rubber rubbed off within 4 months and the stick would get stuck in the R3 down position. Gamestop wouldn't take my PS4 for trade in last summer because of the controler. Had to buy a used ps4 controller from them on the spot for $54 to complete the transaction. I later decided to by put new rubber stick on my old ps4 controller and try trading it in again. They only gave me $30 for it. Thats been my experience dealing with the PS4 controller. Not a good one.

Same here got that bundle don't seem to be having issues with the sticks yet. I also abuse them regularly with Olliolli 2.

If your triggers are sticking out of the box and you didn't "do" anything to it then warranty it. That's not a design issue, you got a defective unit.

Also, people are crazy the DS4 is much, much better build quality and materials wise than the DS3.

I like the ds4 much better than X1 or Wii U.

Whoever did the design is brilliant. But the build quality is as if its made of cardboard. I got grips for my peeling sticks and had to remove the springs from both R2 buttons.

I'm glad I swapped out my DS4 joysticks for the X1 joysticks. You can buy the X1 sticks for very cheap on Amazon. Swapping them out was quite involved though :/

But I'm someone that is awful at that stuff and could still do it following the tutorial posted on GAF. It's now my favorite overall controller to use.

Add me to the hate train; peeling sticks aside, I'm not a fan of the battery life, that light and I've just gotten used to the spongy feel of the triggers. The ergonomic design and the d-pad are ace, but not the evolution I wanted from the DS3 to be honest. I know there are workarounds to my issues, but I don't feel like paying more for stuff I feel they botched.

And dammit why does the PS button this time around still activate when a piece of dust lands on it? :p

The surface of my thumb sticks is wearing, sure, but everything else seems fine. I think controllers in general are overpriced. The Wii U's pro controller is amazing in terms of battery life, but it's stupidly overpriced. As are the Wiimotes. As is that stupid new XBone controller. But accessories are an easy space to make a profit.

Yeah I mean if it was just one I'd think it was just a bad controller but both are doing it. I gamed on the PS3 quit a bit and ps2/one were my only consoles so they got heavy use when I was younger. These ds4s are the only controllers to let me down and it hasn't even been two years with shared use. That's bad.

They actually did change the sticks. Not that it matters, there are plenty of people who have day one controllers who have never had a single issue. I don't think the original sticks were the problem but rather just batches that were bad for whatever reason.

I bought my PS4 day one, and I bought a second controller 3 months ago and you'd be hard pressed to figure out which is the newer controller. I've not had a single issue with either.

And Op, search is your friend, we've had this discussion a dozen times already.

Build quality is pretty awful. I just got an XB1 and I was very impressed with the controller. Those triggers oh man....

My launch controller looks the same as well, and I bought a white one 3 months ago too. Neither has sticks that are peeling but they're both worn down to where they're smooth now. Also my new one has a squeaky ass right trigger. It's very annoying.

Yeah, it actually feels cheap but it does the job perfectly. I especially love the sticks, call me crazy. In fact, I replaced the 360 pad I used with my pc with a DS4. No complains afaiac, except the shitty, shitty battery life.

Okay, then I guess I've been going easy on it then.

Agreed. To me the DS4 is an allround fantastic controller. When I pick up the DS3 again it amazes my how much worse it feels in comparison. Biggest difference is that a sweaty/sticky controller is like a thing of the past with DS4. The material just seems to absorb all the sweat

Had the console since launch. On my 5th controller.

My 3 black ones had the rubber tear off the sticks, my 1 white one's rechargeable battery completely failed.

I am on a camo one now, hopefully it will last longer since its the newest model out.

Meanwhile, my Wii U pro controller and Xbox One controllers have had zero issues.
