DS4 build quality is garbage. Why would Sony make such a cheap controller?

If your triggers are sticking out of the box and you didn't "do" anything to it then warranty it. That's not a design issue, you got a defective unit.

Also, people are crazy the DS4 is much, much better build quality and materials wise than the DS3.

No this was an issue that developed over time. It's really a Destiny issue. Destiny has murdered my controllers.

If i hold ot the way i want to, which is a fairly natural way, the little lip under the triggers digs into the side of my middle finger knuckle. It gets raw and red after an hour of dmc4. I have to wear a band aid over that area to prevent it from happening. A little more rounding would've prevented this.

Had the console since launch. On my 5th controller.

My 3 black ones had the rubber tear off the sticks, my 1 white one's rechargeable battery completely failed.

I am on a camo one now, hopefully it will last longer since its the newest model out.

Meanwhile, my Wii U pro controller and Xbox One controllers have had zero issues.

If you're willing to open up your DS4, you should install some new sticks and get some thumbstick grips to keep them from wearing off.

One of my DS3s got an slight upward sticking on the left stick after 4 years or so, but that is all.
My DS3 does the same thing. Left analog sticks when it goes up towards the upper left position. Weird...
As for the DS4, only bad thing about it is the horrible battery life. But I don't play for more than 2 hrs at a time and when I do I play wired anyways so I hardly notice the issue.

Not a great controller to begin with, but the issues make it far worse for me. I've had to buy three controllers as well as three sets of analog grips to protect those.

Had a DS3 since 2009 with heavy CoD play and haven't had any issues with it.

My launch DS4's R2 started to squeak while playing Destiny but that seems to have stopped. Don't play the UFC demo though. My analog started shedding its skin and I never played it since.

The triggers are my biggest complaint. My launch DS4's right trigger broke when Destiny came out (thanks to Scout Rifles!) and I've noticed how fragile they really are now. I can deal with the battery life and I've yet to have any peeling on the sticks. I just don't want to call up Sony if my current DS4 breaks or have to go out and buy a new one.

I love the feel of the DS4, but yeah, the sticks are awful quality. My launch DS4 sticks wore down to nubs in hardly any time at all. The white DS4 I got in December last year has held up nicely though.

Battery life is annoying, but most of the time I'm not playing 4+ hours at a time like I might have back in the day so it doesn't bother me much. Haven't had any issues with triggers.

My DS4s have been doing a decent job of being my primary controllers until my Steam Controllers arrive in October. :)

Only issue were squeaky triggers, but that was fixed in 2 seconds by spraying some silicone lubricant in them.

My R2 button was creaking for a little while and then just stopped one day. Was really weird but annoying for the short time it lasted.

The only problem I have with mine now is the battery life but I have long charging cables that I normally use for my phone anyways so its not too much of an issue. Would still be nice if they lasted longer though.

For the record, I purchased my PS4 in March 2014

The DS4 has zero problems... now that Nintendo Gamepad thing with the pathetic 4/5 hour battery life is the real hell's spawn.

DOUBLE STANDRADS ARE CUTE
I don't own a WiiU but the fact that the DS4 battery life is even comparable to a controller with a big SCREEN on it is patheeeetic. Does anybody know why the DS4 battery life is drawn out so quickly? It has to be something like streaming audio or the TouchPad, right? I refuse to believe they got a significantly cheaper battery than the DS3

Yeah I don't think the new DS4s are any better just that if I got a new one it would feel better simply by being new. Triggers would work battery would be stronger etc.

Ok yes the wiiu pad out of the box is worse than the ds4 out of the box battery life. But i swear my controllers are dying even quicker than a wiiu pad out of the box now.

You're being sarcastic right?
XD

Point been that the Gamepad caught tons and tons of flak for the battery life and that's with the metric ton of features it has. Whilst the DS4 has comparable battery life (somewhat higher) with much less features yet haven't had as much criticism.

Maybe Sony will release and improved controller for a modicum 149.99.

I just order replacement sticks. You can get 20 get them for cheap. I think china ships 10 of them for $1.50~

Caps are another option. Since I ordered a ton of these sticks I don't worry about replacing the sticks every year if I have to.

Got my PS4 a year ago, and my DS4 is fine. The grips on the sticks aren't as grippy as new DS4's that my friends have, by the build quality seems fine to me.

It's more comfy in my hands than the XB1 I tried at PAX East last year, which is a far cry from the DS3 vs. 360 controller.

If you want cheap, look at DS3, that thing was cheaply built.

You're prob better off just fixing your old ones instead of buying a new one. I imagine the cost of parts & a small screwdriver are much cheaper than a whole new DS4.

No problems here. I like to think I take care of my stuff and some people report the weirdest things with the controller. What are doing to the controller?

Yep they are, I have always owned Sony consoles, their controllers were usually the reasons why I picked them over the competition, but the DualShock 4 is just bad and overrated.

I have both the PS4 and the Xbox One, the One controller isn't great by any means, but at least it feels durable and the dpad actually works better for fighting games.

The terrible dpad, cheap rubber on the analog sticks and sticky triggers are enough to justify a revision of that controller.

This is kinda ridiculous, just cause you don't have a problem with the controller doesn't mean these don't exist. You can pretend like it doesn't but you see people complaining about very specific things, that should tell you right there that problems do exist

And I shouldn't have to spend more money, open my controller for battery and sticks, etc, just to get a decent controller

Best controllers so far I have used.

2 x launch ps4 with 2 x ds4...

360 analogue drift and not centring made them average at best..

The only issue with the DS4 is the thumb sticks rubber which is easy to fix for £ 2 with a rubber grip, which we put on both at the start so never noticed issues with rubber as its behind the grip.

The triggers are great and no drift in analogue sticks,

Because that $100 price advantage at launch sure helped them.

But honestly, I don't know what people do with their controllers. The battery life is crap and I guess that the rubber on the analog sticks isn't the best, but other than that my launch controller still works flawlessly, as do the ones of almost every person I know (IRL) that owns a PS4.

The DS4 is actually the first console controller I've had issues with (the rubber on the sticks). I've played through 8-10 games, which the controller should handle IMHO.

Bought my PS4 December 2013 and my controller actually feels better now rather than worse. At first the triggers would stick a little but after a lot of use it seems to have gone away.

Sticks still look brand new. I've dropped it so many times and feels solid. Guess it's just your luck. Can't really be saying they are all terrible cause that's not true.

If you have a problem then take it up with Sony or who ever you bought it from. To be fair the battery life could be better but doesn't bother me too much.

I bought my PS4 back in November and haven't had any issues out of my DS4. Got a white DS4 in December and that one has been great also.

Honestly have no clue what you people are doing to your controllers. I game on mine heavily due to Destiny, The Witcher 3, Mortal Kombat X, and now Arkham Knight and it still looks brand new, sticks and all. The battery life still sucks but it makes me scratch my head to come into threads like these and see people acting like their DS4s are falling apart after taking them out of the box.

I have 2 DS4 controllers. The original one that came with the PS4 is still in great condition. I bought one of the white DS4 controllers when they released and that one has some peeling issues starting to happen with the left analog stick. I am really wanting to purchase one of the anniversary controllers when they come out a little later this year but I am hoping the issues that Sony seems to have with the DS4 are resolved by then. It is definitely frustrating when you are spending $60 on them.

This controller is legit monkey shit.

You can not possibly defend it.

I am using my 3rd DS4 because TWO died (triggers breaking) on top of other issues.

Thank god it was under warranty.

YMMV. My two launch day controllers still look brand new. My favourite controller I've ever used. The only area of improvement I'd like would be the battery life.

I've never had issues with my controller. Been perfect. I've played for hours and hours at a time too.

Not really defending anything but that's my experience with it.

It's really simple if you keep your thumbs on top of the analog you will likely have no issues. If you push them from the sides It will get a rip. Once the rip starts it's over at that point. Sony needs to add tougher rubber for people who push on the sides. It's definitely a design flaw.

I actually mostly disagree.

I've only had one problem with my OG DS4, which is the same problem most had with their day1 PS4 pads. The control stick peeling off.

However, I actually LOVE the sticks. They dont increase in dead-zone even REMOTELY as fast as the Xbox 360 controllers. I had to buy one seemingly every 4-6 months because the right stick always became shit, making shooters unplayable for me.

I use it to play games with. Weird, huh?

The hinges on the triggers are the worst. They're just two little plastic things, had them break on me playing Driveclub. Luckily it was replaced by the online store I bought it from, but the guy on the phone knew exactly what my problem was as soon as I mentioned R2.

I had my PS4 since day 1 and I have non of the issue that people keeps saying in these threads I really feel like I bought a different console than everyone else my DS4 is as good as new no problem whatsoever so people stop generalizing it's getting hyperbolic

I've gone through 3 as well, even worse for me was the fact that it took 2 months for the controller repair service through Sony because they forgot they even got it. And the controller they sent me back was scratched up and now a few months later, sticks have ripped. It's getting ridiculous.

It shouldn't be a problem anymore with recent controllers. You have launch models.

The "new" controllers are not different

Weird, I think the DS4 feels great, and a huge improvement over the DS3, which is one of the cheapest, shittiest controllers ever.

My triggers lost resistance so fast and now feel like Hasbro playset pieces.

Controller is disappointing for that alone.

I have a couple now, one from Oct 2014 and one from last month, and theyre both pretty sturdy.

I think the design is very good, it was producing a couple of million for launch in Chinese factories without proper QA that led to dodgy ones being released. Since manufacture has slowed, I feel the ones produced now, including the ones I own, are very good.

Yes it is weird that their quality control is so awful that one set of users can have a great experience whereas many others have a completely opposite shitty experience. Except when it comes to battery life. That's a shitty experience we all get to share.

The problem with the sticks wearing down on DS4s is a widespread thing. It just happens from basic wear and tear, but way quicker than it should.
