I don't see why they cant work for post launch firefight using the Warzone maps/AI scripts as well as a low res split-screen coop for campaign/MP.

Come on, these are staple, classic features and the more I think about it the more I'm pissed off.

I seriously believe the ONLY thing people will be able to do is play Campaign if they don't have internet/XBL.

I think they could LAN still for customs. They'd need one box to have an internet connection, but it wouldn't require a Gold account AFAIK

EDIT: This may be just for tourneys, i guess? I suppose they'd need to release a "H5 Dedicated Server" app for Xbone for normal folk to run offline customs...

Here's what we have that's "new":
- Spectator/Oracle mode
- Arena/Warzone "modes"
- Squad based campaign
- Supposedly bigger campaign with more open elements
- Weapon tiers/skins/customization
- Req packs
- 4 player online coop w/ JIP/dropin/dropout

Here's whats old that's missing:
- Campaign theater
- MP theater? Will spectator allow saved films?
- Splitscreen in Campaign
- Splitscreen in MP
- No BTB at launch
- No firefight
- No Spartan ops

TBD:
- Offline custom games?
- Forge features?
- Fileshare/browser?
- Custom games browser?

So many missed opportunities.

I feel like I'm being a whiny bitch about it though, but I can't help but to feel they needed to really exceed expectations with this game. I'm sure they're busting their asses, but I'm not gonna lie and say I'm not disappointed each day we get more news.
 
I'm glad this split screen thing is a complete non-issue for me. I'd prefer they not compromise game performance for this, if that's what it comes down to. If they can get it working then great. I personally have never cared for the handicap that comes from playing on just a portion of my tv. I much prefer just taking turns on games in that case.

Can't wait to see how 343 tries to explain why theater will be downgraded yet again or why there will not be a Campaign theater.

Let's look at the sections Halo 5 will launch with.

Campaign
Multiplayer
Forge
Theater
Custom Games

So fucking barebones it's a travesty.

So, Halo 3?

But then you dig down. Campaign is 4-player co-op. Multiplayer is 20+ maps at launch.

Forge is supposedly much better, will hold judgment until we see it.

Not really barebones in any sense of the word, but it is less then something like Halo: Reach, sure.
 
So I was browsing some behind-the-scenes stuff for Jurassic World and during this bit where someone from Legacy Effects is describing the manufacture of the Apatosaurus animatronic...there's something in the background of the interview that catches my eye...

I think they've been doing Halo props since... maybe the live action ODST stuff? Definitely Reach and "Deliver Hope".

Just noticed the spartan helmet sculpts on the right.

Halo: Blood Dragon spin-off pls. Dinos and everything.

Halo + Dinosaur/Kaiju creatures sounds amazing. Plz.

Also, can we talk about the REAL star of Jurassic World?

Poor engine design is the only explanation. Cut the feature too early to even care to try and bring it in. Split screen is not impossible. Amazing that OG Xbox level hardware can somehow manage 4player split. Such technical prowess.

idk man, its game development. I doubt they wanted to cut splitscreen.
 
It's sad when your friend asks you why you're giving 343 your money and your only reply is "because it's halo"

And then he lists the very things that are posted here and the only thing you can manage to say is "but....Halo"

Frankie basically stated this. He said it wasn't an easy decision, but the overall quality of the game was going to suffer if they didn't cut it.

I pick and choose what to bitch about pretty carefully. I let a lot of things slide because realistically half the shit GAF bitches about is irrelevant, and maybe that's why JC thinks I'm jem or some shit... BUT not having splitscreen AT ALL is a legitimate reason to be upset.

The quality of the game IS suffering.

Hopefully we don't learn about anything else being absent or "missing launch".

The no firefight or spartan ops pisses me off the most. Sometimes it's just fun to play against waves of enemies, etc. I know during Reach or Halo 4 after j got bored of slayer or objective I'd do some fun mission of spartan ops or do firefight. There's nothing for a single player to do alone besides campaign in the game. You have to play with 24 players in warzone etc.

Without live gold, the only thing you can do in this game is a single player run through campaign.
 
Though losing split-screen is kind of a big deal to me, if it is the cost we must pay for rock-solid 60fps, I can swallow it.

I'm more worried about what this is going to do to the player base in the long term. Is the next CoD going to have split? I know that Battlefront 3 does (but only in offline modes). If I was a kid begging my folks to buy me a game I'd beg for one that I could play with my non-xbone-having friends.

Split-screen is a huge deal for casual gamers/beginners. Split-screen was the only reason I got into Halo in the first place.
 
lol, I don't think I ever ran into a decent guest, they always drop huge negative bombs. Plus if the player quits you lose two or more people.

Seeing 2 to 3 guests show up usually means the match is going to be very one sided one way or the other. I'm okay with seeing splitscreen make it's exit stage left, especially if it's due to the overall quality of the rest of the game.

I would use split screen at least once, probably more when my son is older... but I guess that's a few years off.

maybe Halo 6 will have local splitscreen for campaign.

Being okay with them leaving things out at launch or at all is just moving the goal posts.

Btb should be there full stop. Don't care if Warzone suffers.

Forge should be better. Fullstop.

Do you honestly believe I remember or care about every result somebody might have pulled off? Your performance in Halo 5 is irrelevant to me, even if you went positive. When people state opinions as facts and they are terrible at the game they are talking shit about, then it's a different story.

Either way, I'm done arguing with people over this. Talk shit all you want.

Pretty good interview with Kevin Franklin (Multi designer at 343i). Design decisions behind Warzone and Arena, wanting to remove randomness from Arena (like DMR bloom spread, grenades getting shot out of the air), etc.

And not sure if this has been posted but official statement by 343 and MS about split-screen and LAN:

"A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to Ars Technica that Halo 5: Guardians will not support any form of split-screen multiplayer, nor will the game natively support LAN play. "The decision [to remove all split-screen modes] was an extremely difficult one for the team, but one that was necessary to deliver the biggest Halo game to date," the representative wrote in a statement. "343’s focus is to ensure that fans get the best Halo experience yet, and the team felt a split-screen experience would compromise the gameplay design and the visual bar they’ve set."

The representative pointed out that Halo: MCC was not built with LAN support, as well, but we have found that LAN connectivity can be used in that game so long as all connected Xbox One consoles are also connected to Xbox Live via Wi-Fi."
