Is the Batmobile the worst AAA gameplay mechanic in recent memory?

I absolutely adore the Batmobile and think it's integrated into the game fantastically. I love roaring through the city, using it to propel myself into the air and then calling it back and landing in it. Or taking out the goons surrounding a Riddler informant with the cannon and then jumping out to instantly interrogate the informant.

The way it seamlessly appears from just offscreen at a moments notice when called. The whole thing is just amazingly well implemented.

It also gave the Riddler puzzles a huge shot in the arm.

A couple of tank combat sections aren't well designed but, overall, I think it's a wonderful addition to the core gameplay in the Arkham series.

Using the batmobile remotely to get out of tight situations justified it's use for me. I found it pretty cool but that's just me.

Batmobile is a lot of fun.

I think Rocksteady wanted to inject some variety into the formula of gameplay and for the most part it worked out really, really well.

I'm not finished with the game, but I don't mind it at all as a puzzle solving thing. What I don't like is how much it gets used for combat - it really didn't need to ever be used for that, I find the whole transforming battle tank to be simultaneously silly looking and un-batman like. Not that it's against his moral code, just it doesn't feel overly batmanish.

heard everyone complaining, but after actually playing, it really isn't THAT bad, if anything, I sorta like it. Wish it handled better, and the game does lean on it too much, but I feel the hate for it was way overstated imo.

Fuck no, god damn I hate hyperbole. Batmobile was fine, tank combat was fine, just a little too much near the end.

I'd argue that Uncharted 3's melee combat has just as much of an issue with regard to the whole "we invented a new gameplay system that is sometimes good and sometimes bad and added it to a franchise that was already an extremely complete package and now we need to force players to do it all the time" thing.

So many times the game forces you to drop your gun so you can punch a few guys.

I actually like the batmobile over all, well at least the battle mode for it, driving it is kind of meh to me. The only part is the game where I hated having to use it was
in the tunnels near the end, having to lure the the arkham knight to the dynamite, it would give such crummy angles.

Also controlling it when you jump is kinda rough but still overall I like its addition, I like the change of doing some batman stealth type missions, mixed with the great combat system mixed with the batmobile.

Feel just the opposite. The predator and combat stuff is great but it's been 3 games of it. The batmobile brings some variety, and I'm enjoying it tremendously.

Looking at the op, it echoes some posts I've seen in the ot. I don't get it, but hey different strokes. Sorry you aren't enjoying it.

Lol what? No....

It helps with navigation a lot and it's forced in certain parts to progress but it's not the hyperbole that you base this thread on. I love the remote controlled batmobile and some of the riddler trophy implementations.

We finally get the Batmobile, something more than just a cool-looking drive-able vehicle (which people would criticize it for) and people don't like it - while it's OK to feel that way, the developers vision was what we got....and I personally find the inclusion to be great, despite some misses in the implementation, mainly the controls in battle mode and some of the drone encounters. Still my GOTY so far.

I had more fun in the Batmobile than I ever did with horse riding or the combat in Witcher.

lol...that's one way to put it...while somewhat unfair to the Witcher 3.

I feel like it woulda been awesome if used ONCE as a cool surprise.

Like, "oh shit, where the fuck did all these drone tanks come from!?", and then it reveals the transformation, and you use it once or twice ever to fight a small group of drone tanks.

But by overusing it, it did kinda get lame.

The horse in Witcher 3 had some annoying moments.

I haven't played much of Batman so I can't really comment on that.

Coming hot of the heels of completing The Witcher 3, that horse + Geralt's overall movement was really frustrating me, but towards the end I'd accidentally fallen off so many cliffs I became numb to it....

The Batmobile on the other hand....who the hell isn't enjoying plowing through everything in sight with that vehicle of carnage?? That thing is awesome!

I'm split on it. I loved using it and actually found it more fun than gliding around empty rooftops, but its use for puzzles, etc was ridiculous. Literally too much of a good thing.

Exactly my feelings. Liked doing some of the combat and racing stuff, but there was too much and I wasn't a fan of the puzzle stuff with it. Any "open the door for the batmobile" sections were the fucking worst.

Planet Scanning from Mass Effect 2 and Power from Dragon Age: Inquisition.

"Towers" from Ubisoft open world games, but only because of the pervasiveness of them, they were okay the first time or two.

I have not played Arkham Knight but the batmobile couldn't possibly be more frustrating than instant-fail stealth missions...horrible game design. Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs and the Assassin's Creed (although Unity dropped it?) series all use them.

Thankfully game developers don't listen to people like the OP and make every game the same thing. The batmobile introduces amazing gameplay variety, it's used in all sorts of ways. Yes you can argue the amount of certain missions is excessive but the gameplay ideas with the batmobile were great.

Another great addition to a franchise. Each installment needs a major gameplay addition to keep it fresh. Much like zelda and the new items each game.

So much skill involved in the drone combat man. Sometimes you gotta point, then shoot. Sometimes you gotta move the tank slightly. Phew. Don't know how people keep up.

If this mechanic is what you consider needing practice and skill, you ain't got room to lecture people about games being made super easy.

a little bit of skill. it's not gtav/saintsrow3 driving, which is what people expect in games, otherwise we get frustration leading to 'worst thing evah!' comments.

Combat with the batmobile is not my cup of tea. Really don't enjoy that aspect very much

The puzzle solving and riddler races I'm fine with and I love just driving around in it

Also controlling it remotely feels very batman-esque

It does feel forced pretty quickly though but never that bad overall

Eh, the batmobile has missiles, rockets, etc pretty frequently over the years. And an actual Bat Tank was in one of the most iconic Batman stories ever (The Dark Knight Returns).

Planet Scanning.

And we have a winner!

I loathe the Batmobile. I hate every time it's forced onto me, I hate that they replaced boss battles with boring ass defeat the same drones for the 789,945th time. I hate the controls for it, as someone else put it on another board, it's a fucking shopping cart on a sheet of ice. For something new they force the player to use it way too damn much. Everything I go to there's some bullshit reason I have to get the Batmobile there with it.

Fuck the Batmobile.

Right now at this point Origins and City are the better games for me all because of the fucking batmobile.

Well, one of the ongoing problems is how insanely prepared Batman is for everything, like Alan Moore prep time level of toys that Batman has. Oh, your high performance automobile also just happens to have a transforming battle mode with 60mm cannon that was not worth mentioning until this time? That's quite a surprise. Would have been better to just have to take a trip to the bat-shed to install some missiles for a single confrontation, maybe strap some weapons onto the Bat-wing to do a bombing run after you take out some AA defences or what not.

I do like those parts of batmobile the video game, overall driving around, flying out of it and gliding through the skies, using it to complete some of the non-race riddler puzzles, bringing it around to clear out an area.

My main issue is every two seconds "I'm sending 20 tanks at you, sit in a spot and shoot them" "go pull this switch so the car can come through this area", etc.

I'm actually at a point in the game in which I think i'm not going to play it anymore, because theres like 25 tanks and helicopters flying in the sky and I have to take them all out, and I just can't deal with this lazy mechanic anymore. Its just pure laziness on the developers part IMO, no disrespect to those who put in so many hours to make this game, but fucking hell the level design of this game is just terrible.

How you can go from a cool section in which you take out 8+ guys in a room in any way you want, to sit in a corner and shoot 50 things because we couldn't think of anything creative, is just beyond me.

It seems like instead of trying to come up with more cool areas, its just plop the batmobile in a corner and shoot while things fly at you.

The Batmobile is awesome and feels great. Default battle mode controls feel good too. Nothing like blasting some enemies and get blind sided by the powerful scanning vehicles...release battle mode and skid off around the block...and end up behind said enemy and blow them to pieces....feels so damn good.

The Batmobile as a peripheral form of travel is fantastic. Speeding around the streets of Gotham smashing things that get in my way is awesome. I also enjoy it's inclusion in races and puzzles. I actually think they didn't go far enough with it as they could have done some really cool set piece chases.

The Bat-tank overstays its welcome and then some. Is lazy as hell and the gameplay basically amounts to a slightly more visceral game of Battleship.

Maybe it depends on how often you do side missions but I don't think the tanks respawn often at all. If you mainline the story I can see how it might feel like "man, I just cleared the island of tanks and now more showed up" but, at least the way i played, it just wasn't frequent at all. I would actually get a little excited when they show up again (not because of the tank combat which I like just fine but don't love) but because it usually means more checkpoints and watch towers and I found those a blast to clear.

This is why Batman and Robin works really well if you watch it as a Batman parody movie and not a real Batman film lol.

Batman Ice Skates equipped when they just found out the enemy called himself Mr. Freeze on the drive over?

Sure, why not.

I love that it actually requires some time to master, unlike other open world games with really boring car physics. (Sleeping Dogs, Watch Dogs, GTAV to a certain extent)

No I have no problem with it. I actually liked the tank battles but what I hated about it was it's over use in the campaign. It was shoehorned into almost every damn mission. Cruising around and the optional use was fine. But having to platform to certain rooftops, hunt down certain vantage points to hit certain things, use it to actually progress through buildings (I'm looking at you Ace Chemicals), etc were just not fun. It should have been something you could optionally use if you wanted to. Also wasn't a fan of the boss fights that required it.
