Thanks for the write up, Datschge. I appreciate it. The Baba article got me curious since there was a lot of stuff that happened that I've come to forgotten.

A bit disappointing with how the Tales staff turned out.

So have you guys heard about the backlash about Zesteria and Alisha?

Don't care, anyone (with tastes) knows Mikleo is a better heroine anyway.

Plus every time I look at Alisha all I can think is "Did this lady forgot her pants?".

Can we talk about how behind Tales of Games are visually speaking?

I mean Arc Rise Fantasia characters look and emote better and its only on a Wii game running on Dolphin for this shot. Animation are not bad either. (Forget the awful english dub)

Are Rise Fantasia feels like a lost Tales game with different turnbased combat too lol

I like the game more than a lot of RPG last gen including the entire FF 13 saga and Tales of xilla 2.

I actually rather Imageepoch port arc to Vita then the criminal girls thingy so more people can experience the game.

Just finished Symphonia and Symphonia: Dawn of the New World back to back.

Loved Symphonia, although a few of those hours dragged on pretty hard story wise (not to mention obvious plot twist from miles away). I really enjoyed the characters and the world.

I thought Dawn of the New World was decent. I expected to hate it considering everything I read in past Tales threads, but it kept my interest. At first it was a bit jarring hearing
Lloyds
new voice after just sitting through 60+ hours of Symphonia, but I got used to it and just explained it away to myself that it's been 2 years, and he's young, voices get deeper! I love the hell out of the skit banter also. This is the first 'Tales of' game I've played with voiced skits, and a lot of the back and fourth was really charming and added to the experience. Tenebrae is too awesome. About that plot twist though:
Finding out that the Lloyd who attacked Palmacosta and Flanoir was just Decus in disguise was a bit disappointing. I was hoping they had some sort of elaborate excuse to why he would have turned heel...

With Abyss and Symphonia Chronicles done, it's time to head for the PS3 era 'Tales of' games. Going to start with Graces f this week.

Glad to see you enjoyed the Symphonia duology! DotNW is really not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Graces f has a great battle system and plenty of post-game content but a rather lacking story.

Graces felt like it was trying a wee bit too hard to dive into complex political intrigue, and that ended up taking too much screenplay from everything else.

ARC actually had several members that worked on Symphonia and Abyss before, Miyajima (ToS and TotA scenario) did the story, Hisano (ToS and TotA battle programmer) did battle programming and Kanemaru (ToS script director and concept designer) did planning and level design. The similarities were definitely on purpose.

i considered getting ARF...before i heard the dub

Undub it, that's what I did. The game's actually quite a lot of fun so far.

Pretty sure Niko is mentally challenged though. What an idiotic character.

e: the romantic stuff is soo hilariously heavy handed and in your face though lmao. i love a romantic sub plot but this is going a bit too far lol.

ARF bas basically a turn based Tales Of.

It did have some big problems though, like the party getting completely re-arranged over and over and pivotal characters missing for boss fights (which wouldn't be so much of a problem if the game bosses weren't hard and actually required strategy).

Fast forward 3 months, and here I am; completely done with my Tales run. Tales of Graces f, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Xillia, and Tales of Xillia 2 all completed. What an enjoyable series of games (to stave away burn out I mixed in a few other games along the way).

Earlier I sat and thought about which one I would consider my favorite, and I really couldn't come to a decision. Gameplay wise Graces f hands down, and for story I'd probably go with Vesperia. But as an overall package? I'm not sure. I do know one thing I'm sure of though... I sure love me some skits and victory chants. So much goodness, so much personality. After finishing each game I found myself on youtube looking at victory compilations of each iteration just to catch a glimpse at some of the ones I might not have come across in my playthroughs.

Now to join the wait for Zestiria.

Edit -- Vesperia is probably my favorite intro, next to Xillia

So I was thinking of getting this art book for the series but I've never ordered from one of these sites that has stuff imported from Japan to the US. Is CD Japan a good one to use or is there a better one I could go for? I saw this book listed on Amazon too but it was over $20 more. Then again for this order I have no idea how much shipping will be for this.

oh oh, that artbook is lovely, got mine last week

yes, CD Japan is pretty good, my friend uses it a lot and helps me order stuff too from it

shipping would probably be like less than 20 though, if you go with the cheapest option. books are pretty heavy.

You can order it from Amazon.jp too.

They ship books and CDs internationally, 12 dollars and a bit more for shipping but you'll get it in like 2 days, lol

Picked up Tales of Graces F in the sale and played a few hours. Nothing to really keep me so far. I'm waiting for the game systems to open up, which I assume will happen once I finish the prologue. Making fun of Hubert is decent for passing the time, I suppose. Also, it might just be me, but I think I adore Laura Bailey in most anything she does.

Prologue is painful to sit through and only becomes more so with every repetition. Thankfully it's actually skippable in NG+

Ye, the game gets a loot better after the prologue

Well, gameplay-wise. Story or characters never get any better, they're terrible from start to finish.

Falk

Well, to be fair, Hubert went from a terrible, annoying trope to a somewhat less annoying trope.

I found him far more annoying after the prologue. The whole "arrogant smart prick with glasses" trope is pretty much bottom of the barrel, though still slightly above "kind childhood friend who just cares about others too much."

He made up for his crap attitude by being one of the funnest characters to play in the game. Dual swords, to Twinblades, to Dual Pistols, to Bow. It was ridiculous. His crush on Pascal in the future arc made him a better character as well.

Holy fuck, you just made me realize I never played as anyone but Asbel

In a game that has a bunch of different characters and one of the best, most fun battle systems in any RPG ever in my opinion

I may have to replay the game as Hubert now. Hopefully I've still got a clear save file on my HDD so I can fuck around with the grade shop stuff.

Just ssaw this.
Is there a GAF consensus on the top 5 Tales games?
How are they ranked?

Addendum: I have my ToP SNES repro on its way in the mail =)

Is there a long-running franchise that isn't?

Sonic, Final Fantasy, heck even franchises without really bad games like Zelda.

...........I have no clue.

if anything, the tales series is probably one of the most divisive in terms of a ranking consensus, haha

From what I've seen here:

Vesperia is often ranked high.
Symphonia is close high-ish.
Abyss is.....idk
Graces is good combat/bad story. Rebirth gets the same rep for bad story, good gameplay.
Destiny DC is the one good one the states never got.

Any other sorta-common feedback worth stating?

GAF's 2013 Essential RPG voting thread had it as:

  1. Tales of Vesperia
  2. Tales of Symphonia
  3. Tales of Destiny
  4. Tales of the Abyss
  5. Tales of Graces f

Vesperia is far and away the #1 and the only Tales game to make the Top 100 in the 2015 version of the Essential RPG thread. But after that the margins for Destiny, Abyss and Graces are so low that you can swap it with any other English released Tales game... Well except the handheld ports/remakes.

It feels like Luke has a lot to do with it. Some people find him absolutely unbearable from beginning to end to the extent that they're unable to enjoy anything else about the game. The rest only find him unbearable until the tragic events that force him to grow up.

Personally I belong in the latter group and I actually think Abyss has the best Tales story and one of the better JRPG stories in general. Loved the twists and, aside from Luke being just ok, all of the characters were fantastic.

Im in a wired group then...
Luke was......interesting when he was a spoiled ass but the party was cool with me.

Then THAT event happened and the party were just asses about it. Luke post-event/haircut was cool, but damn he whined like no tomorrow. Party was meh after that

Jade and Guy were the best tho.

Oh, yeah, for sure. For a while there I was actually pro-Luke, anti-everyone else lol. But iirc, everyone got better sooner or later.

I admit it's been years since I've played TotA, though. I should replay it.

Surprised Phantasia doesn't rank, I thought it would make the top 3.
