Obscure Wii Games worth checking out?

Personally, I did. A few parts are confusing but you can get the general jist of the story without knowing the language. 2 things to note, you don't need the balance board and you might need a save file to get the game working. If you do need a file and you end up playing, shoot me a pm.

(I did a quick search to see if a translation surfaced, and it looks like pewdiepie played it - lmao - but someone translated his playthrough)

Thanks for the response. I have a balance board and like using it so I probably will.

I don't know how obscure these are, but some gems outside of the regular Nintendo wheelhouse would include:

Elebits
Dewy's Adventure
Sin and Punishment 2
The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return
The House of the Dead: Overkill
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
Little King's Story
Munchables
Klonoa
Ivy the Kiwi
Mushroom Men
Geometry Wars Galaxies
Nights: Journey of Dreams (better than it gets credit for, if you can stomach some of the BS they front load it with)

Have Umbrella Chronicles but didn't like it. Debating whether to get HOTD 2 and 3 when I have 3 and 4 on PS3 as well as Overkill though I already finished that on Wii (was Halloween bundle deal).

Own everything else but Ivy the Kiwi. Added to list.

Edit:

good for you :)

How about BlastWorks? Definitely an underappreciated gem!

Since it'd be on much more capable hardware I think even Sandlot wouldn't have trouble pulling that off :p

Yup. Got it.

What the hell is it with people naming popular and well known Wii games?

OP asked for obscure titles. I guess no one knows what that means then.

Yup. Got it.

I like you ;)

btw, the wiiware game by Trials HD devs I was thinking about is MotoHeroz. Even with the 'z' Nintendolife still gave it a 10/10

Wii was a weird console because most 3rd party games didn't sell well enough to be considered a mainstream success, regardless of quality.

Sonic Colours is maybe not obscure but doesn't get enough praise.

Also Red Steel 2, Prince of persia 2010 spin off, Mario Strikers, de blob, Jett Rocket, Klonoa remake.

Own it for that reason.

Own everything except Jett Rocket.

You need to read this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=635546

I think there was another one like it but I forgot what it was called and don't wanna go through all my old subs.

Will do. Thanks I guess I didn't think things through and didn't emphasis that I meant really obscure stuff that usually don't come up in these threads.

Still I got some remonders of titles to get a discovery of Dawn of Discovery.

I haven't read all pages of this one yet, did you post a list of all the ones you have? That might help :)

Otherwise you'll be getting a lot of recommendations for "obvious" ones, I guess.

It was a spur of the moment thing because Gamestop is having a now rare b2g1 sale this weekend. I may only be able to go tommorow so while I'm looking at stuff I thought it would be nice to have some suggestions since most stuff will be less than $10.

My incomplete list of games is on some drive somewhere. I rarely use my laptop except for school work. I honestly surf the Web more on my Wii U than my laptop.

I just use my Note 3 for everything.

Actually, he looks like neither. I suspect this was its own Wii game that got the Forgotten Sands moniker slapped on it for stupid marketing reasons.

Which made the whole thing confusing as hell.
I originally had no idea that it was a completely different game. And the Wii version is REALLY REALLY awesome. Also has tons of bonus material, bonus levels, challenges and so on and so on.

The HD Forgotten Sands is basically dog crap.

Has anyone listed "Go Vacation"? Now that's also an awesome game.
There is also a game called "Secret Files: Tunguska". It's an adventure game and I really liked it. The successor wasn't nearly as good though.
And I also really liked "Shadow's Tale" (EU) / "Lost In Shadow" (US). Nice platformer, where you actually play as a shadow.

And just giving points for:
de Blob 1+2, although de Blob 2 lost focus
Endless Ocean 1+2, one of my favorite games on Wii

Maturity, bitches.
Another Code R is the sequel to the not-very-super Another Code: Two Memories, also known as Trace Memory in North America. While the games don't have a colossal amount to do with eachother, there is some continuity that makes playing the first game feel required. Gameplay-wise, this Wii sequel has mechanically matured a lot, and flows a lot more naturally. Hotel Dusk clearly taught them a lot in how to make these games. Much like Hotel Dusk though, a large part of this game is basically 'slice of life' stuff, with only a faint whiff of mystery. The game's presentation is just fantastic, and is in my opinion the best looking Wii game.

Played this game a few months ago (in an effort to play games I already have rather than adding to the backlog) and enjoyed it despite never having played the DS one. There was only one time I felt like I had missed out on a detail which was easy enough to look up
her ghost friend from the first game
and it had no real impact on the story so it didn't even matter. The game does a good job at filling the player in on necessary plot details from the first game.

So for those curious about Another Code R, it's perfectly playable without playing the DS one IMO.

This thread has made me nostalgic and so depressed.

Really puts into perspective the abrupt death of the B-tier retail release.

You should tell us what you have. 120? Assuming none of that is shovelware, you probably already own everything worth owning. I personally have 80 or so games and basically have everything I want myself

Ok I'ma dig deeper!
edit: bolded the ones I recommend most

Rogue Trooper: Quartz Zone Massacre (I enjoyed it!)
Trackmania
Thruspace

Tornado Outbreak
(Both de Blob games and both Boom Blox are a given)
Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Deluxe or Ferrari: The Race Experience (don't remember which is better)
Let's Tap and Let's Catch
(Did you finish "You Me and the Cubes"? don't think I ever did...)
428 (Sega's visual novel - considered good, but probably helpful to know Japanese)
Takt of Magic
(Assuming you own Pandora's Tower)
NPC DK Jungle Beat (or the GC version if you can find the bongos)
Shaun White (there were 3 games, one was skateboarding, might've been crap though).
NPC Mario Tennis
Rockstar's Table Tennis (supposed to be good)
Pro Evolution (I think 2012 was best, best to check)
Both PokePark games
Disney Guilty Party
Wii Play Motion (I think it's good for what it is)
Samba De Amigo
Aragorn's Quest (developed by the same team that made Battalion Wars)
Ghost Squad
Gunblade NY & L.A. Machineguns
Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings
James Cameron's Avatar (I think I read it was decent)
The unlocalized DQ spinoffs
Samurai Warriors 3 (and Sengoku Basara 3 Utage if you don't have it)
One Piece Unlimited Cruise 1 and 2
Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop (some said it was fun)
Mercury Meltdown Revolution
Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga
Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers
Lost in Shadow (aka A Shadow's Tale)
Monster Hunter G
Spyborgs (supposed to be bad, could be interesting if like that kind of stuff)
Sakura Wars
Inazuma Eleven
Harvey Birdman
Lost in Blue: Shipwrecked
Baroque
Wii de Asobu Chibi-Robo!
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus
Line Rider 2: Unbound
SoulCalibur Legends
Castlevania fighting game
Bomberman Land and Bomberman Blast

Castle of Shikigami III
Bonsai Barber
Chronos Twins DX
Rock n' Roll Climbing (WiiWare) or whatever it was called
Crystal Defenders R1 and R2
Dive: The Medes Islands Secret!
Dr. Mario Online RX
DRiiFT Mania
Drill Sergeant Mindstrong
escapeVektor: Chapter 1
Grill-Off with Ultra Hand!
Gyrostarr (thought it was fun, if too easy)
Flight Control
Frobot
HoopWorld (enjoyed it for a while)
Horizon Riders (not actually sure this one came out lol - I seem to remember playing a demo)
Liight
Lilt line
LIT
Maboshi's Arcade
Magnetica Twist
Military Madness: Nectaris (WiiWare sequel to the original)
Onslaught (pretty amazing for a wiiware title)
Mr. Driller W
Pearl Harbor Trilogy - 1941: Red Sun Rising
Rage of the Gladiator
Snowpack Park
Rabbids Lab
Space Invaders Get Even
ToriBash: Violence Perfected
WarioWare D.I.Y. Showcase
Water Warfare (if you enjoyed Onslaught)
Zombie Panic in Wonderland

A hundred times this. Easily one of the best games ever, a better Pikmin in my book. And the studio behind it died because no one cared.

Kinda pointless thread when you already have 120 games, though.

The vita port is in english and its better than the Wii version.

So long I've been looking for some boss and soundtrack material of the Vita version to clarify if it even has the same bosses and tracks. I could never find anything. It does have the same bosses and tracks, right? I believe so because otherwise it would be absolute dog shit and I don't see the point of the "remake". The original has some of the best and funniest bosses I've ever seen in a game.

Does it have the classic soundtrack of the original, i.e. Mozart, Bach, Gershwin and so on? The same number of tracks?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBStytItsGs, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCwOuPxE34Q

This, for example. Is this even in the game? And the respective boss fight? But even then, the generic "animu" art design instead of the funny, creative designs the original came up with, the lack of colors and humor makes the remake look like a poor man's version, sadly.

If you like Japanese RPGs for their gameplay, Arc Rise Fantasia is pretty solid. The voice acting gets a bad rap, but really all of Ignition's localization effort was pretty poor. The characters aren't too great, especially the lead females. They are awful.

The battle system is fun though, the game gets reasonably challenging, and weapon and customization system is really neat. As someone who doesn't care much about story, those elements were easily enough to carry the game for me and leave me with a positive impression.

This ^^^^

One of the most fun and challenging JRPG I ever play last gen. A lot of SideQuest with amazing Hunt type MiniBoss fight. Truly a hidden gem .

Dusk Golem

A 21st Century Rockefeller
see, many of the complaints I see used against Fragile Dreams made sense to me once I'd finished the game and understood what it was.

Yes the combat is frustrating and flawed, but it's because you're a young kid who's never fought anything in his life. Destructible weapons falls directly in line with a core theme of the game (fragile and fleeting nature of all physical things). Furthermore, soooo much of the game's combat encounters are optional. Choosing a more pacifistic route will avoid some of those troubles, but also not leave you optimally prepared for the various forced combat scenarios.

Then stuff about retraversal and long drab stretches through tunnels, or long boring climbs up/down ladders played in to the bleak and lonely feel of the entire game. adventures are going to contain very dull portions, providing time to reflect. It's just the kind of thing that was clearly deliberate and that you dont really find in many other games. yea, I just sound like an apologist...

No, I understand, the stuff I mentioned, combat, breakable weapons, doesn't bother -me- too much, just slight annoyances.

But FUCK that motion-sensor room, Crane boss, and that game where you have to catch Crow in the amusement park.

Order Up! was a great game that I lot of people mistook for shovelware. It's a cooking sim, with some restaurant management and a very good sense of humor.

We Ski & Snowboard was the best use of the Balance Board outside of Wii Fit. It was basically an open world skiing game. Nothing mind-blowing as fall as challenge, but it's a fun and relaxing game that offers something you won't find elsewhere.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
WiiWare is something I've mostly ignored but I'd imagine has a ton of interesting stuff. Cubello in particular is one game I've played that's really awesome - something like a match-3-puzzler crossed with a lightgun game, using that awesome Wiimote pointer. There's also Konami's "Rebirth" series and I've heard good things about Fluidity.

So many people hated on the Wii back in the day for being too 'casual' (and to be fair, there was a TON of absolute garbage), but it still played host to some fantastic titles (the obvious ones, Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade), and some really interesting niche games (mostly mentioned above) - Klonoa Remake, Sin and Punishment 2, Zack and Wiki, Opoona, and Kororinpa in particular.

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny
De Blob 2
Excitebots: Trick Racing
Trauma Team
Lost in Shadow

Art Style: light trax
Fluidity
Tomena Sanner

Excitebots is probably the best multiplayer arcade racing game that no one played. If you miss the less intrusive role of items in MK SNES and have people to play with GET IT.

Pirates Plundaar! is a side scrolling beat em up that is well worth the $0.99 at gamestop. It's like Guardian Heroes or Castle Crashers just not as good. Still pretty fun and even 4 player!

Cursed Mountain
The Calling
Lost In Shadow
Fragile Dreams
Xenoblade Chronicles
Last Story
Pandora's Tower
Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Yes, it was re-released on PS3/Vita, but this is the original!)
Madworld (I got it for $2.50!)
No More Heroes 1 & 2
Zack & Wiki
The Conduit 1 & 2
Obscure Aftermath (and get the first game on PS2!)
Dragon's Lair Collection (includes Dragon's Lair 1 & 2 + Space Ace)
House of the Dead Overkill (and get HotD 2 +3 set while you're at it)
Resident Evil Umbrella Chonicles & Darkside Chronicles (and Wii has the definitive version of RE4)
Nights
Klonoa
Okami (definitive version of it)
Red Steel 1 & 2

Opoona.jpg

Opoona is a super fun and silly little RPG with a unique job/work/quest mechanic. You also play it using only the nunchuck. Fantastic little game that doesn't get mentioned very often.

It's probably not considered "obscure", but Wario Land: Shake It! is woefully underrated and overlooked. Of all of the great sidescrollers of that era, I'd put it behind only DKCR and Rayman Origins. I had a ton of fun with it.

How is Sakura Wars on Wii? better here or on Playstation 2? it's the only entry to get an English translation - correct?

I think the PS2 version is more desirable since dual audio.

Apparently it's the worst Sakura Wars game though, regardless of platform. I wonder why they localized this instead of say, the PS2 port of 3.
