Chrono Trigger Best Version - SNES or PS1?

Snes. Visually there's no real difference on PS1, but the loading times are much worse on it.

Though I'd strongly suggest just getting a 3DS and playing the DS version on that tbh.

Not the PSX one, load times, ugh. Play the SNES one and watch the animated cutscenes they did for the PSX version on YT or something.

SNES is better than PSX

The ranking is DS > SNES > PSX

PSX is still playable and I completed the game on it but the menu lags is something to fight through

SWERVE: IT's the DS. Then SNES/WII VC. Then a fevered dream of playing it. Then Chrono Trigger on iOS. Then finally, PSX.

The PS1 version is playable if that's the only way, but it's definitely the worst version of the game. The SNES version is the best in my opinion, and if you have a Wii, or maybe a WiiU, you can play it there just fine.

Snes. PS1 has major issues with both load times and slowdown with special effects or multiple layers of transparencies (The Guru on Mt. Woe or fighting the Final Boss is the worst). The only adittions in PSX are keeping track of your endings and a few videos you can directly watch on youtube, which modify the ending to tie it with Chrono Cross (something I don't really like).

I won't even talk about the DS version. using a new translation did hurt. Right now I am playing it with an Snes Powerpak, as the battery in my cart finally died.

Who doesn't have a DS? Jeez.

Uh... Me? I gifted it to my now Ex, got a 3DS, hated it and sold it.

I assume SNES has better load times? Are they substantial?

DS > SNES > Emulation > PSN Digital > PS1

Load times weren't exactly a thing during the SNES era. Some games had awkward pauses that lasted a second or two between areas or other large scale transitions, but they weren't noticeable for the most part.
The exciting feature of the SNES was slowdown when it was doing too much stuff at once.

Anything but the ps1. So SNES if need be.

But you should really have a DS or 3DS if you like RPGs at all. So get that and play it there, seriously.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
PS1 version is rancid. Just not a fun experience.

DS is the definitive version but on SNES it's still great.

Indeed. It's the one I first played, and while the SNES if obviously better, I still had a blast with it. You get some animated cutscenes, and they are sort of cool, but they aren't integrated very well in the game. Half of the time you see your anime cutscene, and then when it's come the same cutscene plays out again with sprites.

DS, then SNES.

PS1 version has horrendous load times.

DS has everything the PS1 version has, plus extra stuff and no load times. It's ideal.

Anything but the PS1 version. I have the DS version to play on my 3DS and the PS1 to play on my Vita, and I kinda regret getting the PS1 version.

SNES>DS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PSX

If you only have a PSX (or PS3/PSP/PS Vita) to enjoy Chrono Trigger, it's still better than never playing the game.

I finished the game on PSX. It wasn't THAT bad, I had no reference point since I had never played it on SNES.

Your question has been answered, but anyone holding up the DS version as the definitive Chrono Trigger experience is most likely some lanky, greaseball kid who wasn't even born when the original game released.

Yeah, I said it.

As said, DS version is best. All the extra content, none of the downsides.

I first played the PS1 version. Almost ruined the game for me. I hated it. Took the DS version to change my mind and now I love it.

I played SNES trigger, DS version is better

For the price of a SNES Cart you could probably get a DSi XL from CowBoom and a new copy of CTDS.

And that's really, really, really the right way to go.

The PlayStation version is serviceable. The loading times are annoying, but they're fine on a PSP/Vita if you're playing very casually. Like on a bus or plane or something.

But if we are playing that game, what sort of person makes this sort of generalization on internet gaming forums, hm?

OT, DS only slightly edges out SNES. I recently replayed the Wii VC version and it is a fine way to experience this wonderful game. Have fun.

I got grudge sucked!
AKA: shooting fish in a barrel.

PS1 has load times, SNES doesn't. Other than that, they are pretty much the same game. Most say the DS version is the best. I have it but haven't played it yet. Got it for cheap because it tanked at retail.

Why is the SNES version better?

SNES over PS1 for sure!

I'm surprised to see so many people here claiming the DS version is the definitive one. The SNES version has qualities over it making both desirable for different reasons. The SNES version has the better sound effects, resolution (although slightly), a more "charming" translation (opinions vary), and having the ability to play on a TV really adds to the immersion. The DS' new boss/ending is really lacking. It felt cheap, rushed, and was implemented poorly IMHO. Also playing this game in classic mode feels crunched and awful. The 2 new dungeons add nothing of value and feel like they were made with some cheap RPG Maker tool. There are better fan mods out there. The other PS1 additions in the DS port are great though!

Overall I think both the DS and SNES versions are worth checking out, and saying one is better than the other definitely is unfair. Just my two cents.

Why is the SNES version better?

The DS version has a different aspect ratio that puts some people off if they compare them directly and the bonus content isn't very good. Those are the big points I always see brought up.

If you don't look at side-by-side comparisons and don't want to do the bonus stuff anyway there's no reason not to go for the DS version, imo.

Eh, as someone who grew up with the original, having been my first true experience with an rpg from beginning to end, I always favor the DS version whenever I feel like replaying it again. The translation just reads much better imo, plus I can play it wherever I want.

Undoubtedly SNES. Though, the crappiness of the PS1 port is a bit exaggerated. I played through multiple times and got every ending on PS1.

Depends on how much you can stand load times everywhere. If you have a vita to get the PS1 version on then it can actually speed up the load times a bit. Otherwise SNES.
