No word on which characters might be time release, or if this will be the initial cast of characters, with more characters available via time release.

Gameplay Features:
# Position change has been removed and left/right throws are back. Throws might also require different inputs depending on the motion, like in Virtua Fighter, and they will leave you in different situations. For example, if King attempts a suplex and you escape it, you will land behind him, with his back turned towards you.

# There will be a mixture of infinite arenas (Tekken Tag) and finite arenas with boundaries (Tekken 4) in the game. It's unknown how the stages will be distributed. Some arenas will also be finite, but will be extremely large, so the chances of finding a wall will be slim.

# A Soul Calibur II-style conquest mode is being considered.

# Juggling system is going back to how it was in Tekken Tag

# No more universal low parry.

# Character customization will be handled via card system, like in Virtua Fighter. Players will be able to add items to their character and change the colors. No word on how extensive this will be compared to VF.

# The crush moves (temporary name for this feature) are essentially moves specifically empowered to have purer anti high or anti low properties, up until now Tekken has always been a little shady in this area. When the opponent executes such a move your hit box will be voided and your move will be crushed every time. For example, Law's Dragon Sweep will act as an anti-high against Kazuya's WGF, so that the former will always connect if the two attacks meet.

# The forward left and right throws in Tekken 5 cover a much longer distance (view the screens below) than ever before by taking a step before actually executing the throw. We suspect this is an alternate attempt at curing the back dash runaway issue from Tekken Tag. Limiting the back dash in Tekken 4 only led to jabs getting over prioritized, so hopefully this means the back dash will be longer again to avoid this while curbing the runaway potential with the long range throws.

# Jumping attacks will actually have jumping properties in Tekken 5, so low and special mid attacks will easily lose to or whiff jumping attacks. For example, in the past a jump kick could always be beat with a crouching jab. This was based solely on hit timing and the hit box of the move in question. In Tekken 5 the results will be consistently in favor of the jumping attack in this scenario.. This is similar to Virtua Fighter where some jumping attacks would 'crush' low attacks.

A very nice set of changes. It's good to hear they are working on the gameplay more so than the graphics. This should be one with all of Tag and T4's strengths with no weaknesses.

I shall journey far and wide to an arcade to play this bad boy.

I don't care if Raven's a Blade-deriative - he looks BAD ASS.

DJ Demon: I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice Bob. ;)

Anyone know who the old dead guy is in the Trailer?
The one dead in the rain with Feng Wei standing above him? That's Asuka Kazama's now dead father/dojo master.

Bob comes from the old T3 days when nobody could pronounce Hwoarang.

I'm hyped for Bruce. The knees are back!

Heihachi is in? Kick arse. :D
omfg, just imagine him in Devil form. That's the only reason he's ever wanted Kazuya or jin. This is very much kick-assish.

Burrriya!!!!</paul> Ha, people actually call him Bob?

More Tekken 5 Details Emerge
[May 28, 2004 at 9:48pm]

Author: Bryan Dawson

Abstract: The most anticipated fighting game of the year, just got that much better. Find out what's new.

Full:
Thanks to an interview in the upcoming issue of Arcadia Magazine in Japan, and our trusty friends over at Tekken Zaibatsu, new information on Tekken 5 has been revealed. Some of what we already suspected has been confirmed, while other new bits of information have surfaced.

While we originally assumed Kuma would be a playable character due to his inclusion at the end of the E3 trailer, the developers have confirmed that he will be a time released character. In addition the new Jack has been officially dubbed, Jack-5. If you're wondering what happened to Jack-3 and Jack-4, it's safe to say that P-Jack and GunJack have taken those numbers.

Continuing with more characters, it has now been confirmed that 30 or 31 characters will round out the Tekken 5 roster once all of the time released characters have been revealed. We already know of 21 characters, and now we can share with you another five. Bruce Irvin and Anna Williams will be returning to the Tekken lineup, in addition to a character using the fighting style of Sumo Wrestling. This may or may not be Ganryu from previous Tekken titles. In addition, Eddy Gordo will make a return appearance. We do not currently know if he will once again be a palette swap for Christie Monteiro or if he'll have his own set of attacks and a separate square on the character select screen.

Rounding out the character discussion is the confirmation that Heihachi Mishima is not dead. You heard correctly, despite his apparent death in the E3 trailer, Namco will be bringing back the head of the Mishima Zaibatsu for yet another tournament. It is unknown whether or not he'll be the Heihachi we all know and love, or if he'll be changed due to the explosion or possibly the Devil Gene mentioned in the Tekken 4 storyline.

A few new gameplay elements have also been revealed. At least some of the stages in Tekken 5 will be infinite like the stages in Tekken Tag Tournament. So far we have seen several stages with walls, but it's difficult to determine if these stages were completely enclosed or not. Nevertheless, infinite stages will be making a return. In addition, the wall push has been removed in favor of the standard throw system used in previous Tekken titles.

Namco is also attempting to make Tekken 5 less realistic than Tekken 4. The developers used the example of lasers and fire attacks such as the ones used by Devil and True Ogre in Tekken Tag Tournament. Does this mean both characters will be returning to the lineup? Anything is possible, but neither character is confirmed yet.

Last, but certainly not least, Namco has confirmed a custom color mode similar to Virtua Fighter 4. Presumably, Namco will use a card system like Sega did with VF4 in the arcades, but that is not currently known. An example of the character customization can be seen by agile viewers of the E3 trailer. Christie Monteiro is shown in two slightly different outfits. One looks almost identical to her Tekken 4 outfit, while the other simply adds a bandana.

It appears as though Tekken 5 will be addressing almost all of the complaints players had with Tekken 4, while taking the series back to the gameplay style of Tekken Tag Tournament. In fact, there have been several rumors circulating that a tag feature would also be reintroduced in Tekken 5. We'll have more information on Tekken 5 in the coming months.

And that's from May 28th but oh well.

I'm not really digging the return to Tekken 2-style corniness. I've just recently gotten into Tekken 4 and it's a more fulfilling experience for me than Tag was.I just hope some of the gameplay features that were in 4 (push/wall/juggle combos, for one) are kept for the sequel.

Namco removed the push/position change feature for Tekken 5.

so, basically, all the things that made it bomb in japan and made namco have to shut down playmax?

Indeed, especially since TTT's tag system was far more exciting, complex and teamwork based than DOA's tag.

Tag would bring the Tekken mojo back with T5.

Lastly, we need a bad assed final boss. Heihachi in a diaper does not cut it!

A boss with everyone's moveset at the tap of a button like Unknown would rock. Ogre only had the moves of character's he's killed, but someone like him would rock. Namco hasn't ever been too creative with boss moves. A T3/T4 Jin option would be cool, too. Devil mode! >:D

We need to have an option where we can play as T3 or T4 Jin. I prefer Jin's T3 moves over T4 anyday but Jin's T4 moves aren't a slouch either.

No no no....please Namco, do not make another final boss that mimics every characters' moves. It's a lame cop-out for character design. I want to see something new, in both character design and fighting style. There has to be a fighting style that Namco hasn't used yet...perhaps something military-themed like Krav Maga or something with lots of counters and holds, maybe Aikido?

I don't get it. Why in the trailer does it say "heihachi is dead" and the story revolves around that... but he's not dead? What's the point of revealing he's not dead when the story is about him dying.

That's another one of those Tekken plot twists. Like how they keep throwing each other into volcanoes, just to witness the seemingly dead character reappear in the next game. Maybe he's not Heihachi per se, but a devil of some kind, with superhuman powers. You know.
