Dai Gyakuten Saiban (The Great Ace Attorney) Import Thread | Eat your fish and chips

SDCC is currently going on, and Capcom has a panel on Thursday with "first looks and reveals". Now would be a great time for an announce!
I bought the game in anticipation of the US never getting it so a localization announcement tomorrow is practically guaranteed.

He's definitely sillier and more error-prone than the original Holmes, but he still has his moments of surprisingly sharp deduction and forethought.

The fact that they also put up the Trilogy and AA5 on sale and some 3DS themes recently... Please please PLEASE!

If it's not localized soon it will likely never will be. Also enjoy Apollo and AA5 when you get to them!

:p But anyway, with the recent and ongoing sale, this panel, be right after this game comes out in Japan and all, this is probably the best time to reveal it lol.

Does Comic-Con ever stream its panels? If not, then hopefully something pops up in the news tomorrow evening. (Hopefully Periscope comes to the rescue.)

Does the game treat Holmes' character with respect? Huge fan of the original Holmes stories and a few trailers made him seem like a bit of an idiot, I'm hoping his character is treated as at least a little competent.

From the demo Holmes seems to be an inversion of his literary character, reaching wrong conclusions based on the evidence. He seems a bit like the bumbling, bragging, well-meaning oaf archetype AA relies on heavily.

The game does tend to use older kanji/vocab... but it also tends to provide furigana as well in those cases. So it's not terrible.

I don't even know why i clicked on this. I want to go into this game completely blind. Just waiting for the inevitable western release. I guess the temptation to know even a little more about this game was far too great...

Oh right, I forgot to download the game yesterday because I solely thought about my new job D: I'll get it tonight after work.

I've been just fine so far and my Japanese is sooooooooo damn "meh".

hmm... that does sound good. I love AA, so putting in a bit of work won't trouble me. It's on the japanese eshop, right? Might download it when my japanese n3DS arrives tomorrow-ish.

I got my copy from e-capcom.com and it was a special bonus. I don't know if other retailers are doing the same deal.

Yup, just under 6000 Yen. If you've played previous AA games in Japanese, you'll be just fine. So far, 80% of the text is normal Japanese that even uses Hiragana for pretty common words mixed with Kanji. 20% is older Japanese (especially for numbers, pronouns/titles and the witnesses), but like GSR said, there's always Furigana for those parts.

I'm halfway through case1 and like it a lot, best thing so far was
the baby; gotta love him pulling his dad's mustache or being diverted by the pinwheel

Hopefully impressions are positive? How much is it like the phoenix vs Layton game? That was the only one I did not like very much...

Might pick it up in a month when I'm on holiday in Japan.

Also, thanks for the impressions regarding level of Japanese. As I've finished Phoenix Wright 1, Layton vs. AA and AII 2 in Japanese (miles 2 being by far the hardest), I think it might actually be doable.

Stream's started up again with episode two. Beware spoilers! (And the basics of the case probably count as a spoiler, without going into details.)

What happened to your twitch channel? I clicked the link in the OP and it says it was closed.

Capcom ninjas are more forward thinking than I thought. I know they go hard after YouTube, didn't realize they did the same for Twitch archives.

Thanks for the reminder, though - I'll remove that link.

I just began second case and I have a question (rather heavy spoiler, I guess):
Asougi is really dead? Seem like a bit of jerk move to kill him right after an amazing first case where he helped so much.

Did Case 1 last night. It was nice. Not great, not bad, but nice.

Animations are just phenomenal, there's no other way to put it. My new favorite animation thus far of all the 3D games is easily Naruhodo's new "damaged" animation where
he is sent flying into the wall behind him from shock
. It was easy, as all beginning cases are but it didn't feel very hand-holding, at least not AA5 levels. They tended to introduce new evidence seconds before you need to use it, but you still needed to find a connection such as
recognizing that Watson's wound in a newly shown photo matched the emblem on the plate
which isn't told to you by Naruhodo and two other characters like AA5 did.

But the case went on too long. Way, way too long. It's weird too because I thought it was going to end on a really high point when
you realize the poison only affected Watson because of his tooth surgery
which did what I love about AA in taking old evidence and giving new meaning to it as the case progressed, but then it just kept going. What was also odd is that despite being three segments long, there were only four or five testimonies. The length of the case certainly wasn't helped by repeating the "we can't let them get away" -> "but there's nothing we can do..." -> "If there are no other issues, the witness is free to go" -> random "HOLD IT!" sequence so many times. It honestly felt lifted straight from Investigations 1's Case 5 when dealing with that killer. The content of the case and the logic flow of how the case unraveled made sense but it needed to trim the fat and get some polish on the dialogue. It did the job though of teaching the mechanics, setting the tone, and starting the story as two big issues of the case are still unresolved, namely
the motive for murder
. One thing though that actually irritated me with a bit with how the case progressed was
Jezel going "yeah, I hid a gun under my skirt". The gun in the skirt was dumb since Naruhodo immediately goes "I'm pretty sure she has lots of places on that outfit to hide a gun" while everyone else tells you to shut up and you just roll with it only to be told later that that was totally the case. It'd be like "The killer could've gotten out through the vent!" "Vent's too high" "What if they jumped?" "Impossible because of reasons" and then later "Yeah, I got out by jumping to the vent."

The weakest part so far I found --brace your hearts-- is the music. It sounds very nice with classical instruments which feel very reflective of the era the game takes place in, but many of them had very similar, leisurely tempos to them as if they were all variants of the initial cross-examination theme. The "Logic and Trick" variant is really good, but the "Pursuit" variant felt the weakest to me. Even then, it's not bad by any means just...the tempo's too slow so it doesn't feel very exciting to me. It would be an amazing "Objection!!" theme, but as a "Pursuit" theme I feel it lacks that punch we've come to expect.

GSR's already uploaded a sample of Pursuit here for those curious (be very careful of the related videos to the side and maybe hold up your hand to block them. They're safe right now but I had the killer of the final case of Investigations 2 spoiled for me when I wanted to listen to that game's pursuit theme thanks to them. As more people play and complete the game you never know when some one will post uncovered breakdown vids)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt_SxnCDcZ4

One thing I am confused about in the sequence of events in Case 1 is
when did Watson get the burn on his wrist? As I understand it, he and Jezel were talking, Naruhodo walks over to say hi, he leaves, Watson gets poisoned and dies, Jezel puts the steak in front of Watson to make it look like he was alone, shoots Watson's body after dropping the other gun that Naruhodo picks up, and then leaves. So why did Watson's wrist get burned by the plate? I know he was already dead but did she put his hand on top of it or slip it underneath his hand in an effort to make it look like he was eating it? I'm having trouble visualizing how Watson's wrist got on that hot plate when he was killed by a paralyzing poison outside of Jezel intentionally moving his hand onto it for some reason
.

Looking forward to Case 2 and Holmes
enjoying the "teeension of a crime scene" imitating Cabanela
tonight.

The "there is nothing we can't do", "We can't let them get away" and many others are always overused in the recent AA games. It was insufferable in GK2 and AA5 so it's disappointing it is the case here too :(

Nice write up. I agree most everything there except the music (which is working great for me.) In particular,
the case definitely went over the top in the "last chance" moments, and the poison - while giving us a cool murder method and a neat moment in Jezail's bottle antics in court - felt like more of a detour than it should have given the case ultimately came down to showing who shot him, anyway.

Re: that last point of confusion:
that confused me too. I suppose it could have happened when she turned the body around (they focus on his arm slumping down in the intro scene), but that's a stretch.

Yeah, the pursuit theme is really the weakest in the series. One of the two objection themes in the game is actually more fitting to be a pursuit theme.

But I love all other tracks in DGS so far.

I really like the Pursuit theme as a song actually, but it definitely has a very different feel from the other ones (JFA's felt different too, but in a different way). All the other music I've heard so far is pretty great though.

Re: that confusing point of Case 1:
After being shot Watson slumped over onto the plate at some point. That's when he left both the mark and the blood. It was probably right after being shot. If Watson was sitting right next to Jazelle, which is plausible if she said "Hey, come closer, I want to tell you something..." right before fucking up the poor dude, then there isn't any real problem here.

Also, yes, it was way too long. I felt like there was way too much excess dialog. I think they could probably cut out so much dialog that the case could be completed in half the time without really cutting out anything substantial. It was still a pretty good case though.

If that was the case,
he would've had a stain on his shirt from the steak
.

Actually I think I figured it out just now.
I was assuming she did everything after he died since that was to explain why he didn't scream from getting the burn, however since he died from a paralyzing poison and not a gun, she started rearranging the scene after the poison took effect rather than when it finished which makes sense because she decided on the spot to frame Naruhodo after he saw her there. I think she did put his hands on top of the steak or at least near it to leave fingerprints or to make it look more like he was by himself at the time while she was also pocketing the other glass. He was still alive when he was burned but couldn't scream because of the poison and the impact from the gunshot jostled the body so his arms were at his side when she turned his chair around.

Yea, case 1 is definitely too long.
It's not really that I have a problem with the length, just that it feels like nothing is really happening for the amount of time you spend.
Like the bit with
the koban under the steak. Do we really need the whole segment on teeth marks etc when just the very existence of the coin being under the steak in the first place should be proof enough that they were swapped?

Yes, exactly. I was thinking that the entire time.

Ended up buying the most expensive of the limited editions of the game and waiting on that to arrive. My regular limited edition did arrive today though, so just waiting to get home to give it a go! So excited and seriously hoping Capcom doesn't shaft the western fans if the game is localized (yes, I'll buy a digital version if that's the only way to play it, but given they know the fanbase exists and are foaming at the mouth for this and AAI2, there really ahouldn't be much excuse is the way of a physical release).

Well the World of Capcom panel seem to have started by now. Fingers cross heh.

And yeah just listening to the Pursuit theme, it does feel like it lack a bit of omph that the others have, but still sounds nice.
