I hope all future Martin Q&As work the same, where they quickly recite the most popular/repetitive questions (favorite character=Tyrion) super fast at the beginning.

I love his answer regarding his decision not to let a board game manufacturer produce a real world version of cyvasse.

Yeah, that was a really smart decision.

"You may see some extremely shocking things on the show that come up in the next season or two - but I'm not sure you could consider them spoilers because they're never going to happen in the books. They can't happen in the books."

based grrm

I've always been thrown by how he pronounces Cersei.

How does he do it?

Anyone ever listen to the audio books? I did 4 or 5 on a long drive a while ago I forget which. The way dude said "Brienne" was the craziest thing I ever heard. Like "Bry eeeen" except he somehow also made it sound like he was swallowing in the middle of pronouncing it.

I always thought it was weird that GRRM doesn't follow his own rules with names (that's assuming he has rules).

Tywin = tie-win
Tygett = tie-get
Tyrek = tie-wreck
Tyrion = tier-ian

Following the other names within the same House it should be more like tie-ryan.

When I read the books I thought it was pronounced Tie-re-on

I thought Hermione was pronounced Herm-ee-one and Dumbledore as Dumb-bleh-door.

In ASOIAF I thought Theon was Thay-on, and I thought Damphair was
Damp-hair duh
.

Either way, it's weird it's tier instead of tie.

I think so too.

Also, I always mispronounced Targaryen as tar-gar-yen (like the Japanese money) even though that doesn't follow the same rule as Daenerys and Viserys. Also, Aerys as air-iss instead of Ares (like the Greek god).

I was a total Hermeeohn. I hated her name, hated her character because I hated her name. Once I found out the true pronunciation, which I thought was fucking amazing, I softened on the character.

I may seriously do a HP re-read after IaF since I'm digging it so much and maybe now I can read the books without thinking her name is the wizarding equivalent of derp.

I always pronounced Tygett=ti-get and Tyrion as tierian. So I think it's 50/50.

Blame English / Germanic languages.

Man I really like Jaime in the Riverlands (until the Stoneheart confrontation because Stoneheart is lame and whatever). Just chillin' with his bro Marbrand, goofin' with his coz the Warden of the West, getting wisdoms from his dope-ass auntie Genna.

"but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you. I said so once to your father's face, and he would not speak to me for half a year." What a dope-ass auntie. #teamlannister

Yeah but think about how you say "tyranny" as opposed to "tyrant." The ny at the end shouldn't change the way you pronounce the preceding syllable, yet it does. (for Americans anyway.) So those inconsistencies exist in real life.

Also with words like Targaryen and Jeyne etc,I just assumed early on that GRRM likes to replace traditionally "i" sounds with a "y" because he thinks it looks cool and unique. I find it to be a bit lame tbh.

1.5 months later I still haven't gotten past page 40 of book 5. That depresses me.

Since January I've been steadily reading all the books (starting with book 1) on my work commutes and enjoying the hell out of them.

I really hope something can galvanize me into reading a couple of consecutive chapters. Because season 5 is the only season of the show I haven't watched and I am DETERMINED to read book 5 before I touch season 5.

English laughs at your rules.

Damphair's first AFFC chapter is one of my favorites in the series. It's such a perfect set up chapter for that region, and almost feels more like a short story/prologue than a traditional POV.

(I suppose that makes sense given that it was once a part of AFFC's original 100+ page prologue)
