Way of the Samurai 4 PC |OT| High Definition Megamelons

On my way home I convinced myself I needed to buy this. Then I had time to think.

I need to save money for various huge expenses this year, so I'm going to do the smart thing and wait for a sale. This game does look right up my alley though and I'll be watching everyone's participation in this thread.

I like that someone on Steam just uploaded the entire Samurai Champloo soundtrack as a mod.
Oh god.........that's just f'in amazing and fits like a glove since the game is already pretty wacky itself like Samurai Champloo. If there's a breakdance style like Mugen's I would definitely try to find it lol.

Also someone needs to mod a random character who walks around with a guy behind him who beatboxes.

I managed to fix that weird controller issue by using x360ce

So what do you keep between playthroughs?

I just got this awesome iai style and I'm hoping after I finish this play through I'll keep to keep it for my next run it's fuckin awesome.

Okay I can safely say the Samurai Champloo mod makes the game far more entertaining. When the battle track kicked in for the final assault of the route I was on I damn near got goosebumps.

Only finished once but you keep styles and blades and some of the NPC missions seem to stick so you don't have to grind them every run.

- All styles, items, parts, money and weapons as long as there's space in your chest (you can upgrade it in the unlocks menu)
- Crime rate
- Sensei will be in the dojo and Dojima will be the smith if you finished their quests
- Hospital, casino and language school remain open or closed
- Your dojo members and level

Wait you inherit the crime rate? Does it go down?

Crime rate is tied to several factors and yes it is retained between playthroughs:

To make it better
Buying items and paying for them.
Do sidequests from the magistrates
Some random positive sidequests
Sleep at the inn

To make it worse
Buy things, but don't pay
Do the gambling den or thief sidequests
Do random mean sidequests (killing someone when asked by thugs for example)
Sleeping outside, vagrancy

Sorry I've not been on here much post release. The Steam forums have kept me fairly busy.

I just thought I'd let you know that the latest patch should add mouse support :)

It also should fix the audio distortion and hopefully a few of the crashes too.

Woohoo thanks :D

We’ve just uploaded another new build to Steam.

This one fixes the audio distortion that some of you have been experiencing and also adds (as frequently requested) mouse support.

We've also made several coding changes which should address some of the crashes.

New mouse functions
Moving the mouse controls the camera
Left mouse button = weak attack
Right mouse button = heavy attack
Middle mouse button = block

The mouse should also support the various sub functions and combos involving these buttons.

Does it fix the issues with Depth of Field? Particle effects and some lighting effects seem to be just blocks, also. Possible issues with transparency?

EDIT: Nope, still broken. Back to waiting I guess...

Is it just me, or do audio levels for voices seem odd in the latest patch? Most cutscene voices are too loud and every other kind of voice is too quiet.

I just gave the mouse camera controls a try, and they aren't bad. Some improvement suggestions:
  • Even at the highest sensitivity, it's still too sluggish. Could do with a huge increase in the range on the upper end.
  • When you strafe/walk sideways (e.g. pressing W and D at the same time) then the camera gradually tries to rotate back behind your character. This is natural with a controller, but feels really strange in a KB/M scheme.

Audio seems to be all over the place. Sometimes loud and other times really quiet. At least crackling seems to be gone. Also auto-targeting, as mentioned earlier in thread seems to sometimes break for reason or other.

Man this charm and sword title system just doesn't seem fun at all. Guess I could see myself doing it if I could freely just salvage everything I loot and when I finally find a 3x anything I could freely move it to any sword I want instead of it being stuck in that certain sword part. 3x Big Shot in a Basal Blade? Tough luck. You're going to use that because stats. After you find 2 more parts that is..

Other option seems to be to find, say 10-20 copies of a sword you want to use and just constantly disassemble and re-forge it until you have 3 parts of the sword with the 3x charm you want. Guess that's an intended option since it's free to do. Just takes time and luck.

After that there is the engraving, which apparently can't be transferred from your current sword to the new ultimate one you just spent x amount of hours crafting.. Blaaah.

Anyway aside from bitching about the supposed "end game" aka moving to the highest difficulty possible to loot more styles/swords. I'm still enjoying the game despite some weird design decisions in it. Think I've hit almost all the bad endings soon, or at least I hope so. 30 hours in so far so really take all above complaints with a grain of salt. Since you don't actually need to do any* of that grind if you stick to easy/normal.

I could ramble a bit more about the Dojo or fishing, but I'll save it for later when it's not 4am.

*1x Life&Death sword is a must, but that is fairly easy.

So wait if you strengthen and harden a sword a bunch of times and then you disassemble it to use the blade with other parts will that remove all of the boosts you had on the blade?

Would assume so as it even removes charms you might have had, it just turns into generic sword parts. I've only melted/disassembled one sword I upgraded, but didn't do anything else with it.

Strengthening and hardening are still the easiest upgrade things to do however, because you can grind money and scrap metal without RNG. Not sure about full upgrade to 500 str though, because not there yet either.

If you are having trouble earning money, do a bunch of side missions. The ones where you go talk to someone, kill someone, or clean up stuff are the easiest. The bigger side missions also give some good dosh if you find the collectibles on site (like the junk for thieves missions).

Man, the choice system in this game is amazing. Kinda wish it was used in a more serious game.
Play the first game in the series.

I LOVED WotS 1 and despised WotS 2 (which was garbage). How does this compare?
I posted my thoughts on this issue here. I feel the first game is still the best, but 4 is certainly no slouch and it's most definitely better than 2. 4 has significantly more content than 1, but at the expense of the tightly woven branching of the first game.

Yep, first WotS was amazing and a lot more serious than this. I remember finding it used at a Blockbuster waaaaay back for around $6.99 and bought it because I remember reading previews of it in either Gamepro or EGM. On my first time playing it, I remember dying like 3-4 minutes at the start because of that one event lol. If you have a PS2, definitely find the first game whenever you can and replay the crap out of it. Never played part 2 or 3 btw so no comment on those but I generally heard 2 wasn't great and dunno much about 3.
-------------
Also I just found Prajna cave, Sensei and the Thief guy earlier today.....had no idea that I missed them completely on my first play through lol.

Got my first ending. It says normal ending, but I'm pretty damn sure this is bad ending.
the boiling pot... but I'm a squeeky clean noble samurai, the hell

Since you can choose a
female character
after your first playthrough, does that change anything in the game or is purely a cosmetic choice?

There is at least one funny dialogue option in that area but I think the game just always assumes you are using one of the three default characters. But not really sure what that is spoiler worthy when people here are telling us how to get the optimal results for a first play through.

And I think I need to mess with that Samurai Champloo soundtrack mod to add in some Shogun 2 music.

Not sure if any of you have been following the DLC related discussion on the Steam forum. But this announcement was made over there:

"Regarding recent comments about the mention of bonus DLC in Way Of The Samurai 4’s product description, we’re happy to offer the following explanation:

Our original plan was to launch the game with a 40% Pre-Purchase discount along with bonus DLC, after which we planned to apply a 20% discount to the game during its first week of release. However, we later decided it would be better value to keep the 40% Pre-Purchase discount but then apply a 20% discount to both the game and all DLC during the release week instead. Unfortunately the original game description wasn’t updated to reflect this.

As a way of making amends, anyone that has purchased Way of the Samurai in the last two weeks will automatically receive a free copy of
Flame Over in the their Steam library. Additionally, we are also extending the 20% discount for one more week.

Thanks again for all your feedback and support – it’s hugely appreciated by everyone here :)"

Which should explain why you now have Flame Over, if you didn't already have it.

levious

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
Haha, saw flame over in my recently played and was wondering what was up. So what was the issue, dlc was originally going to be included?

Thanks for the bonus game.

Alright I've got 5 endings down, just got the samurai straight ending.

I keep running into Akemi at the graveyard and I swear she's up to something ultra fishy. I'm gonna have to explore that more in my next run.

Looks like they've fixed the issues that people were documenting. Good time to jump in. I was expecting some fan loophole to get around it in a few months. Nice work Ghostlight.

I want to get this, but how 'playable' the KB/Mouse setup is?
I don't own a gamepad and don't plan to buy it just for this game.

I finally beat Kinugawa on harakiri after like a ten minute long edge of my seat fight and when I rush over to pick up Nerveknife, my character throws it the hell away because apparently the analog stick was still slightly tilted. I quickly run in the direction it flew, find it, and then it fades to the credits before I could pick it up again.

It all happened in the span of like 5 seconds. What kind of evil person made this design decision? It's a good thing I wouldn't want to use that sword because there's just no way I'm redoing that fight.

I messed around with it a good bit, but I play with my controller mainly since I've gotten used to it.

It plays fine, you'll have to do some rebinding to group all the functions around WASD since the original layout was more of a WASD IJKL thing. The mouse controls the camera, left click is fast attack, right click is heavy and middle is guard.

Something to keep in mind that the Dpad normally controls using items as well as selecting swords from the sub menu, so I would personally rebind the at least the up and down functions on the Dpad to be near WASD. R and F are good candidates.

The Way of the Samurai series really hates completionists.

Some things like the extremely short window for rare weapon drops are just baffling.
Getting the best ending is always obtuse.
Quite a bit of side-content requires a guide. Night-crawling the unique NPCs? Good luck ever figuring those out on your own.
etc

When it comes to picking up weapons you can only get once a run I just kick spam and say screw it to the samurai evaulation.

Especially when doing stuff like the light of hope ending.

The series has always had those 3-5 second nailbiters where you've downed the boss, you rush over to kick the unique weapon and get it in your inventory, only your inventory is already full and now the screen is fading out... We've all been there.

We've added a few more options to the ini file.

FOV - changes FieldOfView in-game (excludes cut scenes)
EnableDOF - set this value to 0 to disable depth of field effect
EnableHDR - set this value to 0 to disable bloom/glare effect

The voice audio is much better in the new version. I no longer have to choose between being deafened or being unable to hear in-game voices :p

However, now the game has a 100% crash rate for me when alt-tabbing back into the game. Used to be it would crash if you did this during the intros, but now it always crashes if the game loses and then regains focus.

In the previous patch, the problem was that once you did this you'd see the fish cursor in the middle of the screen forever, so I was hoping the note about the cursor displaying would also fix that, but... :p

Edit: It doesn't crash if it's windowed, but switching to windowed does make it crash.

Sweet I hope disabling DoF effects makes the game look less blurry when the DoF screws up.

I'm having such a painful grind trying to get my double big shot sword to break the 400 damage mark. It's only got crazy eyes on it but I think after some more reforging and doing the yakuza kill mission I should be able to get it to 450 just with all the swords broken down + kills for the appraisal and then I can jump into harakiri no problem. I'm at 360 right now with 20/15 refine

Kasshin Iai Jutsu is easily becoming my favorite style, especially once I realized it had 75% damage reduction on it. The whole thing is just so stylish and flashy.

Here's my way to dominate in high difficulties: Isobe Swordfighting (a Waki style that comes from a thief mission) has two moves, Guard and Thrust.

Thrust in particular has great range, but if you have a Big Shot sword, the damage is enormous. It's a fast and easy defense breaker. I have it in my own custom Waki style and nothing else even comes close. Even on harakiri, they'll kill the toughest enemies in 2-3 goes.

Oh wow, I have that style but I've never bothered with it since I just wanted to screw around with an Iai style and I ended up loving it.

With 2x bigshots on hard and 300 strength on the blade a lot of the moves basically 1 shot people. Even the simple one two pommel smash into slash attack takes out half of a dudes health and on lesser pranjas I've had the simple pommel smack or sheath check outright kill people before they even enter combat.

I'll give it a spin because that sounds insane though

Nishastra

Guard and Thrust both seem to do more damage than their numbers would indicate. Guard in particular isn't even listed as a defense break, but it is certainly getting the Big Shot bonus.
