If I had to choose and list five anime series that I really liked, I'd go with (in no particular order):
  • Kokoro Connect
  • Monogatari series
  • Paranoia Agent
  • Baccano!
  • Welcome to the NHK

If I had to make the top five into a top ten, I'd add Kill la Kill, Evangelion, Madoka, Psycho-Pass and Fate/Zero to the list.

Gangsta ep. 7
Damn, I guess that is one way to solidify a relationship. That is some really fu(ked up stuff right there. I guess we know why he wears an eye patch now...
Can't help but feel that there was some truth to what Worick said to Delico about hating Twilights.

Another new show by Bones:

Bungou Stray Dogs
Director: Igarashi Takuya
Screenplay: Enokido Yoji

Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers, and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They're tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi's future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!

Please someone free Igarashi from this eternal torment and let him direct a good show again.

well, yeah, that scene would do it, but hey, there was something deeper in their relationship, so it's all good...

Aside from that, is watching Chiyafuru worth it? It's been in my Crunchy queue for a long time now...

Given its in my Mal top 5 I think so. S2 drags a little in spots, but I love it anyway.

I'm Gonna Die in 30 Days Please Bone Me Already/Gokukoku no Brynhildr 08

This show is going to get me banned eventually.

Naruto Shippuden 425

Madara being Aizen, Sakura being Sakura, quite a bit of padding, bad animation that improved a bit for that Massive Chibaku Tensei sequence. Jesus Naruto looks really silly with this pink face skin of his.

Evangelion and RahXephon on his writing credits?

He has potential.

But his latest efforts on Melody of Oblivion, Star Driver, and Captain Earth are incredibly disheartening.

It's been sitting there forever, maybe I'll give it a try, lol. There are so many other thing that are like 1/2 done, but Crunchy is so much better than the other streaming services.

GOAT taste confirmed

Kokoro Connect was incredible

lol. Somehow I missed the fact that the script writer for Diebuster and FLCL also did Star Driver and Captain Earth. Clearly I need to watch the latter two.

Just watch Star Driver and call it a day. But don't expect anything close to Diebuster or FLCL. That's just setting yourself up for disappointment hell.

Can't help but feel that there was some truth to what Worick said to Delico about hating Twilights.
I always thought Worick and Nico were the best of friends. Through thick and thin and all that, surviving in a broken world. After that though, I really don't know. I feel like it's a partnership if anything in order to keep each other alive. Plus there's that bit in which
Worick tells Nico after he killed his whole family in front of him that he won't let him die until he suffers through the worst pain possible.
Really messed up relationship that those two have.

Also why does Goku now have neon blue/green/(??) hair. Wut.

Dead

well not really...yet
Star Driver isn't great as a whole, but has some really good moments and episodes and is overall worth a watch.

Captain Earth is completely worthless

Nope. Nope. Nope. Don't do that do yourself.

You think you can stop him? That only spurns him on.

In other news, I might have to check out Diebuster. Didn't like Gunbuster really, but because of that I may actually like Diebuster?
Can't argue too much with Phaze's taste either...yet.

Dead

Captain Earth was the proof to never trust Bones.

until they pull another Space Dandy that is.

you mean uuh-so-good. green hair is next
more like never trust Enokido/Igarashi

Promise traditional mecha series

deliver bland shit, even the character designs were bland as hell

Yeah, I really like what the show is doing with their relationship and its development. There's some pretty good tension writing going on without being too overwrought.

He became a Super Saiyan God (red hair), then a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (blue hair).

Yet, somehow, none of this bullshit is as laughable as GT, yet.

School-Live ep. 7
Kinda of a cute episode mixed in all of the depair of the past episodes and the situation at hand. The last scene was cute, but in actuality, it made me sad at the same time. I wonder if they are going to keep going with the story even after the 12 episodes are done. I mean, I know the manga is still ongoing, but damn. Do they ever get any "hope?"

God damn, I have Prison School (manga) withdrawals. Well, now I can be one of those manga readers that can't help but compare the anime to the source material.

As long as you're not expecting any tension or drama because the result is always the same.

Or any stakes because the characters are all completely interchangeable.

Just because you know the outcome doesn't mean there can't be drama. The climax fights were all extremely well done and Takuto was pushed into a corner in a few of those fights.

Yup, I like the blend of current events with flashbacks all throughout an episode. It's making for some great story telling and character development.

So Dragon Ball is the new Street Fighter. Wonder what the next level of power will be called

Gintama is too long but it's AMAZING. It's funny that they keep mentioning how they're about to end and despite that they have like 300 episodes. I'm still kinda early, at 110, but so far it's one of the funniest animes that are also dramatic with great action. The Yorozuya of animes.

Also, a top 5 animes as others posted:

-Steins;Gate
-FMA: Brotherhood
-Kokoro Connect
-Gatchaman Crowds
-Baccano!

Probably Gintama will be there once I finish it. :)

Since he and Vegeta can become Super Saiyan God Super Saiyans, it stands to reason that there will be second and third transformations come the third arc of the series.
And there certainly can be tension and suspense even if you know the good guy will win.
Not with the way that anime was set up and especially not with the quality of the scripts for that show.

Not with the way that anime was set up and especially now with the quality of the scripts for that show.

Tension requires the hero to be in some form of danger. Episode 8 presented him with Sugata as an opponent who was actually more skilled than him, and Takuto barely won by the skin of his teeth. The show properly built up to the fight, delving into Sugata's personal problems and responsibilities, and Takuto was pinned down for most of the fight. Yes he won but that's largely inconsequential to how he got there.

Episode 16 had Takuto getting the shit beaten right the fuck out of him. The conclusion to the fight was one giant asspull but the rest of the fight was very well done from a storyboard and emotional level with Takuto considering why he was fighting in the first place and his desire to become a pilot. He had a 'loss of faith' moment and considering his position, there was tension into whether he would actually win or not.

I think you're under the illusion that Takuto breezed through the show when he barely won quite a few of the fights and him having the best mech in existence saved his ass under numerous occasions.

More Yukine angst. Yay.

I wouldn't worry to much about there being Yukine angst on par with S1 if you disliked that.

Trailer looks good, OP music sounds great like the original. The only thing I'm worried about for anime-only watchers is that (manga spoiler)
Hiyori losing her memory might feel like a retread of the anime-only ending arc of S1, unless they change that a bit.

I'm under no misapprehensions.

There was literally no way he could have ever lost any fight in any fashion, so he won. It doesn't matter that for fake-tension's sake they had him "scrape by" a few times.

It sounds like I'd really like Star Driver.

I don't know, it has a ton of flaws, mainly resulting from being too repetitive. That said from an animation standpoint, it's also one of the best looking mecha shows in existence and the climaxes are very well done. I wouldn't recommend it but there are people that like it, Corvo for one.

That's like saying GaoGaiGar has no tension because you know the heroes are going to win.
