Naughty Dog wraps up Uncharted 4 mocap

Huh, didn't realize they were using facial mocap this time around. Wonder if it's just to help drive down costs
I think they are still going in and adding hand made touches. Really it makes sense, it was weird that they didn't use it for TLOU and instead recorded the actors' faces and animated the faces by hand based on the recordings.

I don't believe this, if ND is not making any more Uncharted games after this Sony will build a new studio to carry on. I'm fairly confident we will see Nate and crew in future games.

i can almost guarantee that there won't be another uncharted game with Nate as the main character. Naughty Dog are really billing this as Nathan Drake's last adventure cleverly not implying last uncharted game. there will be another uncharted at some point down the road but with a new character and maybe some guest appearances.

ND is not using the same tech as that animated gif. It's way too heavy for gaming consoles to simulate micro detail/skin stretching in realtime.

I believe you guys are overthinking the delay. I think they just needed more time and were ready to release the game early next year.

The game will sell regardless, so I'm sure there was no strategic plan to move it.

Pretty much, they will have spent more than 4 years working on this game when you add in the year the other two directors were on the title. ND is a big studio and said that a small portion is working on a new IP, due to which it's conceivable that over 200 people are making UC4 at this present time. It's not going to be a cheap project at all and what's been shown so far looks incredible, so excited for this game. They won't want to risk the quality of the title which can get totally fucked up due to some game breaking bugs, that would not make ND employees very happy and for Sony a buggy game would mean lower sales in the long run.

UC4 is going to sell really really really well, heck I think the Drake Collection is going to pass a million with ease. By name alone UC4 will sell well at launch, if the game is great then the quality of the game will take care of sales.

Everything else releasing this year bar Black Ops 3, FIFA 16 and Tearaway looks like shit to me so it's going to be a slow end to the year but UC4 early next year has me incredibly excited. Just waiting for the UC4 MP to start and that will determine if this is the first game I purchase since GT5 in 2010.

I would be shocked, stunned and pissed off if Uncharted 4 gets delayed until October/November 2016. With that said, im fully expecting it to be released on March 18th or March 25th 2016.

I prefer the exclusives being spread out throughout the year as opposed to being all bunched in like Microsoft does especially since I prefer Sony's exclusives and buy the majority of them.

Holiday season may be great for some Xbox One owners but what about the other nine months? I purchased an Xbox One back in April and sold it a few weeks later once I read that Quantum Break was delayed from September to 2016. Aside from Rise of the Tomb Raider, there's not one game that I want to play on Xbox One and even Rise is a timed exclusive.

So for me, spreading out the exclusive games throughout the year is perfect for me. :)

Im 100% sure ND will release uncharted 4 in march, as it makes sense that from october till then they'd gain enough new fans from the release of the uncharted remaster series. 4-5 months and the uncharted taste remains fresh.

Pushing it into late 2016 wouldnt make sense since they probably need to space out thing for horizon (sony next big ip) and TLG.

I can't wait to see their hard work. This is going to be amazing. I'm interested to see their character facial rig. Before they were using about 100 bones in the face, now they are using 300 and 500 bones for rigging this time. I thought the facial rigging for Last Of Us was pretty amazing. This is going to be even more amazing. Naughty Dog's facial animation is the best in the industry. Hopefully we will get to the rig like Last Of Us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myZcUvU8YWc

Damn, im gonna miss this series. It's gonna be tough watching it go.

Really hope we have a lot of in. Sully in UC4. Wasn't enough of him in UC1 or UC2.

I'm more worried about Elena, Emily Rose was filming Haven for a while until just recently, so I hope she had the time to be in the game more.

Agree. However, ND is so good with characters that they easily make you forget whoever's not on screen any given time.

About the series ending, it's indeed tough for us who love the series dearly, but it's kinda bittersweet for me because, while Uncharted is one of my fav franchises ever, I want to see ND expand with new IPs and ideas.

Is Nathan Drake is Uncharted? Because they have said this is his last adventure. That leaves the possibility for a new protagonist.

"Months ago" isn't reassuring considering the game has been in development for a long time. VA work & motion capture started in early 2014.

Considering threw away a bunch of the previous work months would be more than enough time.

I just meant Uncharted with the same gang and developed by ND. I'm open for whatever the franchise may bring if they keep it alive with a new set of characters and a capable developer though.

Naughty Dog has never said that this is their last Uncharted game either. Starting fresh with a new protagonist might be what is needed to keep them motivated to continue making Uncharted games.

All Uncharted games released in the holidays, Uncharted 3 managed to sell 5 million in November alone, & up to 9 million within the 4 months that followed. It also sold an additional million or two since then based on the 21 million units announcement a while back.
...Was rushed and was the last one they've released in Oct-Nov. TLoU took its time. UC4 is taking it as well. What's so hard to understand here?

So you think UC4 was delayed to avoid competition? Considering how well UC3 sold as a holiday release I see no reason for them to be worried about it possibly getting overlooked.
Well, not really, they obviously delayed it to get more time to finish the game. But even if it was ready for Oct-Nov I think that they would pushed it back or tried to finish it in Q3 if possible. That's what they're doing since 2011.

They could tell his brother story somewhat in 1-2 games leading to Uncharted 4. If Sony gives Uncharted to another studio it's probably going to be SSM. Guerrilla is too busy and Quantic Dream is not really a fit I say. Sony has literally no one else to carry the IP. Sucker Punch? Nope...they play an strategic role in WWS lineup of games and generally do their own unique thing. San Diego is MLB and small projects collabs. Bend, too small.

There was no Uncharted game after it, of course it was the last Uncharted to release in Q4. & you ignored the part where Uncharted 3 sold ridiculously well, doubling Uncharted 2's sales despite the holiday release, which is the most important part for Sony.

Why would Sony avoid the holidays when the best selling PS3 exclusive was actually released in the holidays? That makes no sense.

And every PS4 game from Naughty Dog came out *not* during the end of the year holidays. haha. ;)

Kind of taking the piss, but we're tracking towards that early 2016 date, i wouldn't count on it being anything other than that.

I am still burned by Uncharted 3 not working on certain PS3s after a firmware update. There was a thread on the ND forums and I don't think ND ever found a solution. That sucked big time for me because I wanted to play UC3 MP but couldn't.

Actually, just checked it and people are still posting the issue, those that just got a PS3. Sucks for them.

Why would Sony compete with 3rd parties in holiday season when these 3rd parties sell their consoles as well as their exclusives if not better? Don't you understand what I'm saying? It's better for them to use their exclusives in timeframes which don't have any big 3rd party releases - this way they're helping hardware sales during the periods when there are no CoDs/ACs/etcs. This is exactly what they're doing for the last four years and I think that this is a right strategy. This also mean that there won't be any "delayed to holiday season" bullshit for any SCE game.

Your argument is flawed, Sony wants money, releasing a big game in the holidays maximizes sales. Most of their best sellers last gen were holiday games. And they didn't avoid holidays over the last 4 years, considering GT6 launched in December 2013, & Uncharted 4 was supposed to launch in November this year. GT7 is also most likely a Nov/Dec game next year, perhaps GoW4 as well.

You haven't provided any reason why Sony shouldn't release games in the holidays, cramming all of them in the holidays is bad, but spreading them out including holidays is great for both us and Sony as a company, so it's win-win.

And Uncharted/GT/Halo aren't the type of franchises that should run from the holidays considering they sell better than 95% of third party multiplats anyway. Partially because they release in Q4.

Hopefully that's what'll happen. I've seen Neil insinuate that this will be their last Uncharted, but I may be mistaken.

Another team that might've been capable to do so, in our minds, was RAD, but...

Why would Sony get rid of one of their most successful franchises. Each uncharted game is guaranteed to sell a couple of million

He never did that, he always referred to it as "Drake's last adventure".

That's selling the franchise a bit short, each entry doubled the sales of the previous one.

I'm a little disappointed that I never got an Uncharted set in China(or other Asian regions.) I always wanted to see Drake scale The Great Wall, or search for the Tomb of Genghis Khan.

I think they are confident that Uncharted 4 will sell and will move consoles whenever it releases. Uncharted 3 is sitting at 10/11 million copies and TLOU I think at 8 or 9?

ND and Uncharted will be fine.

Yeah, I stand corrected. I do believe, however, that ND won't develop another Uncharted any time soon. Maybe next gen, if ever. The series will continue of course.

Or... maybe Sony and ND can find a happy medium attractive enough for them to be happy to develop another Uncharted this gen. Who knows.

I just pictured Drake climbing the wall throwing cracks. China would've been great indeed.

Emily Rose is adorable, I hope she has a "bigger" in Uncharted 4, and a new TV Show, because frikin Syfy cancelled Haven :(
It's "cancelled", but tbh, the plot wasn't going anywhere. They should've ended it when they went into the barn. At least we'll get 13 more episodes that will wrap it up nicely (as promised).

Because what's the point of releasing your best game in the dry season and then having nothing for the holidays when most people are ready to buy things.
Yeah, pretty much why I'm never buying Uncharted 4. I would have been there day 1 had it come out at the end of the year, but it coming out Feb-Apr? No way. Never touching that game. And that goes to any game that doesn't release in the last 3 months. They've all lost their business, at least from me!

Ehh, I don't think so for Uncharted 3. It's at high 6s and likely 7 million now. TLOU should be at 9 million by now I'd wager. It's the best selling game since Crash, which is impressive for a new IP.

It has to be more than that if the series is at 21 million now not including Golden Abyss. It sold more than Uncharted 2 and I think the first Uncharted topped out around 4 million.

Wow did not know that... My guess is 1 million, 5 million for the first, 7 for the second and 8 for the third. I'm really surprised it sold that much. -_-

Good friend of mine(who hasn't played them yet) was telling me that no one ever found the Tomb of Genghis Khan and that apparently the architects were murdered by soldiers in order to protect the location of the tomb. It was supposed to be this vast treasure collected over Khan's lifetime. He is telling me all of this and I am just thinking about Drake going into China, fighting Mongolian death worms, and a rickshaw set-piece...

Asian Uncharted, oh how I wanted thee.

How do you know this? They're already doing pretty advanced skin deformation if you have seen the tech videos on youtube. I don't see why this particular implementation would be that much more taxing to do.

I would assume this can be done in real time but with everything else going on not ebough overhead woul be left on a ps4 plus am assuming nd are using an evolution of their existing skin techniques . I assume they would try and incorporate aspects from this in the future but given this is a newer work maybe it's too late to incorporate into uc4 maybe later games .

Impossible, we know that it sold 5 million in its first month, exceeding UC2's LTD sales up to UC3's launch very quickly. We also know that it sold additionally up to 4 million in the next four months because ND announced that the franchise had sold 17 million (it was 13 million one month after Uncharted 3's launch), so that puts it at about ~9 million, we also know that the franchise sold even 4 additional million units since then after the 21 million announcement, probably legs between UC1/2/3, so UC3 sold additionally a million or two since then.

10-11 million is pretty accurate, if not more considering UC3 was bundled with the super slim PS3 model a year after its launch.

Isn't it late to still be doing Mocap for a spring release?

I could be wrong but I'm positive they said they finished mocap months ago?

Not necessarily, given the change in casting it would make sense that a lot of the cutscenes would have to be redone.
