In the run up to the launch of MGSV, and with the outpouring of hype and love on social media, it reminded me that this series has a very strong female following.

Something I noticed years ago, from forum posts to fan sites and blogs, and its not necessarily a genre that would typical conjured up in "Games What women like" lists.
Though metal gear has never simply been a just a stealth title.

What other (quality) games have large female followings?
For example the Assassins Creed series has always had an apparently strong female following, and now (7?) games in you get to play as a female in a mainstream title. For a bit at least

From the perspective of the FGC, Street fighter... well it doesn't have a strong female presence at all.
Oddly enough, Dead or Alive seems to be the most popular, despite or perhaps completely due to, well.. everything.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Just from my experience, the Final Fantasy series and games like Virtue's Last Reward and the Danganronpa games seem to have larger female audiences.

Kind of cheating answers because a lot are from the anime's fanbase that crosses over but Sengoku Basara and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure in Japan.

Persona (Megaten as a whole does, but Persona definitely is the entry way to a lot of people regardless of who they are) and Danganronpa

Uncharted maybe

Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy from what I have seen.

Also women are the most passionate about some mobile games like Candy Crush.

Golgo 13

The Man With The Golden Dong
Every woman I've ever dated has loved Mario games (even though none of them have cared for gaming in general), and that's more than a few :)

Weird, I've never really thought of MGS as having much of a female fan base in particular.

The main ones that come to mind for me are stuff like The Sims, Animal Crossing, World of Warcraft, Bioware RPGs and Bethesda RPGs.

Many "life manager games". The sims, animal crossing, harvest moon ect.

wRPG's with character creators seem pretty popular as well.

Ill Echo Tales of
but for events >.>

"Players of the Tales of series are 70% male and 30% female in Japan, but for events like this it's about 90% female," series producer Hideo Baba tells me at the end of the first day. "Women tend to be more interested in the story and the characters, while men are more interested in the games themselves and messing around with game hardware. So when their favorite game character appears on stage, the sound of screaming female fans is really something."

oh right I forgot about Mass Effect!

Also the two big ones of a certain genre, the Warriors series (Dynasty Warriors) and Sengoku Basara

From experience, I'm tempted to say Devil May Cry and Mass Effect. Most of the DMC fans I knew in real life were girls and women - a small sample of course!

At least in sweden CS has always been quite popular with women. Totally anecdotal ofc but my fiance pretty much only plays CS:GO and Planetside 2. And she's pretty damn good too :)

Edit:
And WoW too. Lots of females play(ed) wow

All my female friends seem to love the Dragon Age games. I do also, but they realllllly love them.

It's because the offer the chance to play kick-ass female heroines who are on an equal level to their male counterparts, and in which you get to have a nice level of control of who they are and how they act.

The first Mass Effect was my first shot at Bioware's stuff, and I fell in love with it pretty quickly. Definitely happened again with DAI.

I wonder what the gender breakdown for the Sims franchise is. My impression is that it may have a larger female than male fanbase.
