Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

How many characters do we think Capcom has ready to go. I feel like they probably have 20 and are still deciding which will be the main 16 they go with for launch. Or recently decided on them.

I'm sure that's been discussed though.

I don't think they have the initial 16 done to begin with, let alone 20

I'd be very surprised if there isn't a DLC character or two at launch. 2, 3, and 4 all initially had unplayable bosses as well. I wonder if that tradition will continue.

16 just barely. The amount of development and rebalancing time is short enough as it is.

Me too. But I smell we'll get this instead:

Those look delicious.

Well, I already mentioned that I don't agree with swapping based on leaks, I don't think any company does that. However, working on more characters than the base 16 is fairly in-line with normal game dev and the initial line up could easily change based on problems in production, though for the most part it'll probably stick mostly to what they first planned out. We're probably looking at 2 to 3 max characters getting swapped about due to changes during development.

Honestly sounds like too much work. They have to heavily balance the initial roster in addition to fleshing out all their movesets (plus add a story mode, and work on netcode, etc). There's a lot of fine tuning to be done so working on 32 characters would lead to them getting no where for the other components of SF5.. I could see them having a set dlc plan for the first year, maybe with some movesets or ideas in place, but from how expensive S-kill said fighting game characters are (back when SF4 came out), I doubt they'd want to risk expanding their initial scope and get the game out asap.

A bet a bunch of dudes are going to be excited when someone picks her on the player 2 side.
They still haven't fixed that? :/

Heh, we're not talking fully done and balanced characters here, but rather the major ground-work. The truly paintstaking balancing comes after you successfully make the character :p
Also 32 is probably a lot more than they'd likely be working on. I'm thinking 3 or 4 more at most. The artists/modellers usually need something to do while the balancing and whatnot takes place anyhoo :3 I'd include audio in that list but the poor folk in audio usually just get called in at the last minute once everything else is pretty much done :p

That probably could be true, especially if they have a certain story arc planned that will include dlc characters in it. I really wish we had more to go off of besides a random youtuber speculating based on every little tidbit he finds... And I guess with R Mika probably coming out in the next reveal, I'll have to wait for the next reveal after that to get hyped... But TGS is coming around the corner pretty fast..

Welcome to my entire experience for each member of the currently revealed roster :p
I was somewhat interested in Cammy until I realised they were continuing to take her down the path they'd been taking with her in SF4 which is not a playstyle I want to go with.

As for the story, a character doesn't need to be playable to be in the story, as evidenced by Blazblue's constant use of non-playable characters in their arcs that they later add to the roster in later versions. Same applies to Guilty Gear a little too :3

I think we'll get a lot of characters eventually, if only because there's money to be made there and there's not expansions planned. Maybe the story mode will be like MKX having Rain and Tanya? Or they could split up the story into smaller sagas or whatever and newer ones would herald new characters.

There's probably going to be seasons. I bet we'll at least have 20-22 characters by the end of 2016.

Nope. The jiggle still doesn't happen on P1 side. :(

R.Mika aside, another possibility of 'onos dream' is perhaps a brand new character based off a design that never made it before (possibly one we've not seen ourselves via the old concept arts... or maybe one we have?)
(I am in no way secretly hoping for Abelina or something similar... honest :p )

Well we know he has always wanted to do a new darkstalkers... Maybe a darkstalkers like character?

People claiming that the only reason we want R. Mika is for the jiggle physics are only perpetuating the issue. There's nothing wrong with a little sex appeal in fighting games. And for me it's more about her unique moveset and style of play. I was never really a big fan of grapplers, but a grappler who can run and be swifter than most grappler characters is one that's appealing to me. Her design could use a little more maturity to balance her out, especially if she is hypothetically older now but overall I always thought she was a cool character, not just because she's got the curves.

We anticipate a big roster when all is said and done, and they are not going to include DLC characters who don't fit in the story. In other words, all the characters can fit in the story, so that argument doesn't discredit his theory, which I don't really believe because... leaks are not going to affect sales of this game.

As for Mika, I think she's an awfully dumb looking character, but if they fix her up but keep her goofy/clumsy, I'll probably be okay with it. I don't really think they should make her less curvy, though. SF's women don't exactly look like Dead or Alive, aside from maybe Poison. Nothing wrong w/ having one or two all around shapely women, considering almost all of the guys look like Olympians.

Fuerte isn't a grappler. A swift grappler sounds like Hakan. He can't run, but the movement options when oiled is interesting. But that character most likely isn't physically appealing to them.

I love Hakan's design and core move set. I can't stand the oil gimmick, though.

I bet you put tons of hours in on Fuerte

I honestly hated Fuerte. I guess I just thought this design was stupid and too focused on Mexican stereotypes. His run was just silly too, it was too cartoony. I think if R. Mika is in the roster she'll definitely have a weightiness to her playstyle while still having some unique movement options.

The DLC characters will be part of the story too.

The "cook who's good at martial arts" thing is an Asian one, no? They just translated it to Mexico.

I'm hoping the game at least gets one more basic "slow but powerful" grappler

I'd try Mika if she's in but I can't picture her filling in for Hugo/Gief/Hawk/Hakan

If r.mika is in I hope she plays like she hulk from marvel. Obviosly not completely like her because marvel systems being completely different, but r.mika being a pretty mobile grappler with pretty decent buttons. Can't wait to see her gameplay if shes revealed.

Yesssssssssss. Good buttons, lots of resets since she has an air command grab, that would be amazing

Interesting seeing people define her as a fast grappler as while she's not got the hitbox issues of Zangief and co and isn't quite as slow I didn't think she was all that fast outside of her super run either  Things like her slide and whatnot give her some approach options, but I'd eyeball most of them being similar in reach to gief's green hand.

I just like her because she's a fun character summoning in wrestling rings, shouting 'RAINBOOOOW' and whatnot coupled with being a female grappler (none of the guy grappler designs appeal to me)
Also I love a lot of her moves like that odd little 'hop' headbutt and some of the painful looking throws including ye olde suplex :3

I think summoning the wrestling ring is specifically what takes her into goofball joke character territory for me. Not that I wouldn't want her on the starting lineup, but she'd be a lot more harmonized with the cast if they at least dialed her down that much.

Yeah as cool as that was in Alpha I don't think they're gonna have anything like that SF V. I'd be super surprised if I was wrong, I mean Birdie is pretty wacky with his soda pop, donuts and boogers so who knows.

Not to mention the bowls of noodles falling on people's heads.

I think they're made precedence for slapstick and OTT maneuvers.

With all the talk about "blonde fighter V" I decided to make up this handy chart. I even broke the characters up into racial categories (although maybe I shouldn't have, I hope I don't end up offending anyone or sparking controversy...)

If I made any mistakes or missed anyone, let me know. Looking at it, it's crazy that a full half of the white characters are blonde even though in real life I'm quite certain it's got to be a lot less than that.

While I would like to believe that Viper is hispanic, Black or both. I don't think there is any confirmation on that.

Viper's ethnicity hasn't been confirmed, and Juli is German, not Native American.

Also, Vega is from Spain and Rose is from Italy, so they could be reclassified also, though they both have light skin tones.

The knock on blonde characters is really about the US/UK characters always ending up blonde.

lol @ Eventhubs noting that Omega Evil Ryu definitely appears to be a test for SFV, but not making the leap to "it's not a test for Evil Ryu."

I had Vega in Hispanic originally but people disputed it.

Also, according to SFA3 endings, Juli is T.Hawk's sister.

We've yet to see just how important the story is. Sure if they're doing a MK style story mode swapping out characters will be harder, but for all we know they're doing some shitty story mode with text inbetween fights that differs based on what character you picked. That sort of thing lets characters easily get swapped about.

I disputed it because there's nothing that says a Hispanic person isn't white. Spanish isn't something incredibly different from being white. Catalan and Basque maybe, but not Spanish itself.

Actually looking it over you could make the same argument for Greek (since Urien is greek), but that's a whole mess I barely wanna touch lol.

Juli's exact backstory is still hazy, but the most recent info about her via the comics is that she was born in Germany and moved to Mexico and became part of T. Hawk's tribe. (Possibly his lover/wife.)

You could classify Vega and Rose as Mediterranean.
