This pretty much explains why they didn't preload. If they basically skipped summer vacation to move the steam launch date up they probably did just the bare minimum because that's all they had time for, and now they have no time to spare for Steam because they're gearing up for the post release patch cycle.

Not a question of incompetence, they simply didn't have the time and were in fact burning vacation time.

That's not really an excuse, though. The extent to which doing a pre-load requires effort is thus:

- "Hi, Valve, please change the app state to preloadonly."

In fact, since the app hasn't been modified at all over the past five days, the rationale does nothing more than further the idea that there should have been a pre-load. At least "The data isn't final yet" is a vague excuse that can be supported with "We didn't want people to download a patch on launch day."

This is the kernel of it, it's fairly unlikely that the game's data is being modified heavily this close to release, and even if it was they could just release a small update at release. All signs point to the lack of a preload and general release time confusion being down to shortsightedness on Konami's part. Nothing else.

it's weird. it's not like this is the first konami game on steam. far from it actually. can't remember if any of them had preloads though.

I do not recall GZ having a preload, then again it had a sort of "surprise" launch during the first day of Xmas sale, so perhaps the lack of a pre-load there is somewhat understandable.

Is there like a countdown anywhere on how many exact hours left until we can download this bitch

disclaimer: this is if what konami is saying was true, which it should be considering, y'know, they're the people who would know this shit.

We should at least check if the New Zealand option works in approx 23 hours and 40 minutes, that's when we'll know if in fact it does just unlock at September local time and Konami has made a mistake.

I wish they'd atleast have provided most of the data on the disc version. But no it's just the fucking 9mb installer and you'll have to download everything lol

That's really going to piss off people who bought the physical version specifically because they have really slow internet.

i wouldn't put much faith in that. worth a quick try, but i seriously wouldn't get your hopes up at all.

I think only Lords of Shadow 2 had a pre-load, no other Konami games have that I can remember.

I wonder if we can thank Cox for that. He seemed to be on point when it came to PC.
It's always interesting to look at these things and wonder how much autonomy people like Cox had in regards to franchise they were heading at the time.

Steam says 2 days 2 hours.

I have the day off tomorrow, so if the New Zealand option is correct, I will be one happy camper

Err...this thread isn't about conflicting release info it's about the game not having a preload which is what the post you quoted is about....lol

What time the game is available for download absolutely falls within the discussion about preloading and launch timers, in this thread over the last 22 pages has gravitated towards bad info handed out by official Konami sources...not sure why you ignored the rest of the post in favor of pointing this out?

We know there's no preload...this info was given with a caveat that the game would be available for "early download" which may or may not now be true, not sure if you've been reading the thread at all?

edit: Lol the more I read it you literally ignored everything else I said.

You didn't misunderstand, it contains only the steam installer. Unless the content is hidden. But I wasn't able to find it.

Are they even stocking a physical PC version in the US? The lack of data on disc doesn't bother me, I kinda want the box. Call me old fashion, but I like having a physical library even if it's just a voucher code inside.

Have I just missed them or have there been no pre-release deals for this for PC in the UK? Is it because the only Steam version currently on there is the one with GZ as a free gift?

Unlike Playstation, Steam is relatively new to the whole preload thing. I give it another year or two before it becomes standard.

Reel 'em in!

I'm about to purchase on Steam, but yeah, pretty ridiculous there's no preload. I hope it's available to start downloading before I leave for work Tuesday AM.

haha, I was trying to find out exactly when it was introduced but no luck. Either way, it's been standard for ages. Sometimes people should end sentences with "I think".

Half Life 2 had pre-loading in 2004.

I don't mind TPP not having pre-load since we know KojiPro took additional time to finish the game so it might not be on time for distribution, what baffles me is the lack of concrete unlock/downloading time.

Is this a staggered release or what? Having to wait until what is basically the 2nd of September is taking the piss a bit (UK) and thats without a bloody preload.

That doesn't matter:

The way pre-loads work exactly is that the depots as they existed upon a game becoming pre-loadable (Steam's backend keeps older versions of depots, which is why even Valve can roll back patches when necessary) are downloaded in an encrypted state, provided of course they're included in your package. The reason there is often a relatively small download period upon unlock is that the data no longer matches, so Steam has to download what is essentially a patch -- there are no missing files, aside from perhaps the executable in cases where the game in question is using CEG ("Steam DRM"), due to how it works.

But, yeah, you're absolutely right that there's no justification for a lack of a proper pre-load period. Even if Konami spent a few days fiddling with the data and it resulted in a 5GB "patch" on release day, that'd be preferable to downloading the whole hog for just about everybody.

The only reason there's no pre-load is that Konami doesn't want there to be one. Literally all it takes to do a pre-load is asking Valve to change the app state. TPP's app hasn't been touched in six days.

Oh no, we'll have to wait a little while to play the game. Even though konami moved up the pc release from the original sept 15th date. I'm sure we can find something else to occupy our time while it downloads.

People are annoyed because there's a pre-load on other systems and not one on the PC even though the data hasn't been modified in almost a week... and even if the data had been modified, Steam has supported delta patching for years, meaning a pre-load would still be preferable for everybody without a particularly good connection.

Tell me if my brain is not doing the maths correctly here, I am rather tired at the moment but I don't think that equals 5am September 1st does it?

The game is still set to the default unlock time of 10am PT. Despite the circus over the past week that has been Konami's comments on when the game unlocks, nobody has asked Valve to update the unlock time. That's not to say things won't change at the eleventh hour, but it's not looking good at present, especially since it's the weekend.

Okay then well I guess I will just sit back and see how it all unfolds.

Ignore the steam countdown that is when it will change on the store from a bundle to a single game. Konami have said if you have already purchased the game you can download it from midnight eastern time which is 5am in the UK.
