Lots of New Super Mario Maker Footage Round-Up

What the heck is tank theme?

A level is tank theme if you make tanks in it, there's no background featuring tanks, is there?

No, it uses diffent bg's in all stars and just night in smb3 from memory

But a theme is not just its background, it's also the base tileset.

Though of course doomship/battleship/tank share a lot there, so most of it already exists.

Whoa whoa whoa, Some people from Playtonic designed some levels? Will they be available in the full game like Ancel's?

Nah, they're user-created levels. Playtonic did a stream on Nintendo UK's twitch channel. If you check there or their YT channel you can see (some) level highlights or the full stream with all the levels they worked on and played through. Some very creative stuff in there. Assuming this was the retail build, so hopefully they will recreate and upload them after launch.

I love the second round of tanks in SMB3 All Stars World 8.

The hazy foggy castle wall background... you just knew shit was about to get real.

It's amazing how the Wii Balance Board, Waluigi, a Shy-Guy, Foreman MOTHERFUCKING Spike are included but not Daisy, it's kind of hillarious in a way, I can see a lot super salty Daisy fans for this.

I can't wait to see videos of people playing as
the Wii Balance Board
! That is so absurd, yet so hilarious!

I'm planning to scan the 25 or so Amiibos I have so I can cut down on what I have to unlock.

Also because I just want to use the bloody things in a game.

Is there a list of new things included? I'm not too familiar with Mario but from the videos I've seen, there a lot of new elements introduced.

Almost all the new things are mechanical additions more than content additions. All the tools in the base game have been in Mario games before, but what is new is being able to drag mushrooms to any enemy to make them giant, attaching wings to enemies to make them fly and behave differently, attaching enemies to other enemies to make new monstrosities, wearing shells on your head as a protective hat, making pipes spit coins or fire flowers, that sort of thing.

Actual new content includes some items, monsters and themes not present before in older Mario games - ghost houses in SMB1 and 3 style, airships in SMB1 style, Thwomps and Magikoopas in SMB1 style etc. New sprites were created for this back-ported content and the original composer of Mario music was brought in to make new thematically appropriate music for these level types.

Plus there's the 100 amiibo costumes with unique animations and sounds.

I was going to capture a video showing all of them and their unique poses and animations, but am unsure if I'm allowed to do so even with the review embargo having been lifted. Some of them have really clever poses and run animations.

Wow. You can play as
7 Marios, 5 Yoshi, 2 Samus', 2 Links, 2 Isabelles, whatever the hell 97 is, some chick from a messaging app, a spring, and fucking Waluigi, but not Toadette and Daisy.

Nothing is really new except art for themes and enemies that weren't present in SMB1, SMB3, and SMW. You can put wings on enemies that never had wings before and stack them up, though enemy stacks have appeared in NSMB games. And the mystery mushroom and helmets.

I finally got to play this at Best Buy.

The building tool is super intuitive. What a winner Nintendo has here.

Also, this was probably answered, but the physics are not like the NES originals. This is very obvious with the SMB1 tileset. 8bit Mario is much more agile.

Played this for the first time today. Was still wondering about the physics for all 4 games, and they all feel pretty great :)

Can't wait to take it home.

Simple and creative, i like it.
Awesome level idea and execution, but man was that hard to watch.

Seems like a better strategy would be to take out the chain chomp, grab the hidden mushroom and start blowing up blocks from right to left instead of left to right. Get the hard part out of the way while you still have a floor to work with.

I think they're identical but not exactly the same, at least in SMM they seem to be a little different between themselves, add to that, the games are running on widescreen now and at 60fps not sure if the originals were at 60fps.

But they are exactly the same. In the original games they had very different jump heights/distances but in SMM they all have exactly the same jump heights and distances.

Originals were 60.

Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, but it seems like
that's the old Zero Suit Samus costume and not the Gobshit Other M one.

Dammit Nintendo. How hard are recolors!

Of course they feel great. I don't get why people act like NSMBU physics are bad.

Yeah everyone made a huge huge deal of them before, but until you control it in your hands you don't know for sure. It's nice everything feels pretty much exact, with original NES Super Mario feeling slightly better.

Oh, no. They're not exact at all. It's one thing to play and feel like they are a certain way, but if you actually measure them side by side they aren't like the original games at all and are in fact identical across styles. It's NSMBU's physics engine.

Deku Tree level

Somewhat simple but still pretty cool.

Starts at 2:00

He should have used the trick of that creator of the Donkey Kong-like stage, copying the terrain with vegetation, in order to give the initial bits a stronger forest-like appearance, avoiding those giant pipes. The underground theme likely would make the interior look more "natural" than the ghost house theme too.

I have now pre-ordered this game. Can't wait until launch.

What is the maximum amount of levels you can upload (with modifiers)? As I have mentioned prevously, I intend to recreate Super Mario Bros. Special. That game has 32 levels, recreating it in full and having it uploaded may require a community effort.

I really like TheBitBlock's Pikmin stage, thematic and fun looking.

Man, Josh makes levels that are so original and good-looking.

But they are exactly the same. In the original games they had very different jump heights/distances but in SMM they all have exactly the same jump heights and distances.
Nope, they have full running speed identical jump heights and distances. We still don't know about acceleration, air control and slipperiness.

It's NSMBU's physics engine.
Doesn't mean anything. New Super Luigi U runs with NSMBU's physics engine, and yet physics are different.

Came to post this one. Showdown Slowdown is genius and one of the best levels I've seen designed for the game. I thought the Metroid level he made was clever but Metroid isn't really my thing; this really wowed me, though.

I remember hearing that the prerelease created levels will be wiped from the servers at launch. Is that true?

Yes, it is.

Level is cool but it is really cringe-worthy to me hearing people talk about how many amiibos they have and speculating/misinforming that you need amiibos to unlock costumes. People who post misinformation, even unintentionally, I think is one of my pet peeves. :/

I don't wanna spoil myself so I kinda regret clicking the spoiler, lol, just did it unthinkingly really but I only read the text and didn't glance at the link image (when I clicked it unthinkingly last night or somethin') for more than a second, so I think between that and the other costumes I've heard of, there are still some I've successfully remained in the dark about.

Bottom line, I really just want to know if there is a Nabbit costume. Break it to me gently, please.
