Holy shit! My level got featured on Destructoid! http://www.destructoid.com/good-news-now-super-mario-maker-can-give-you-nightmares-311212.phtml

My inner child is squealing with delight :D

I may make a sequel to that goomba stage (several people have asked me to), but it may take some time: I don't want it to just be like "AND NOW YOU KILL EVEN MORE GOOMBAS DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUN". Plus I got like 5 other stages Im working on that'll keep me occupied.

Some things are too good for a sequel though.

I'm probably not the first to do it, but I thought it would be funny to make and upload a Flappy Mario game, ripping off a ripoff. It works pretty well with the tools in the game, too. People will hate it if it shows up in the Mario challenge, because it can actually be a bit challenging, lol.

1339-0000-0048-E6AD if anyone wants to try it.

I'm considering submitting this as my 1-1, but I'd like some feedback first. Please let me know what you guys think of this introductory stage.

2DEB-0000-0048-E566

If you want to submit this for the contest you might want to consider making some major changes.

Right off the bat, Bowser chasing you through the entire level is a big no. Even as an advanced mario player, Bowser's movements aren't that easily predictable, his fireballs can stay on screen forever depending on how the player moves, there can be more than one fireball on screen, you can't kill him, he's too big, too dangerous, and just the fact that Bowser appears in 1-1 automatically makes it not a 1-1 style stage. I mean, unless you want to cage him up in a bonus room as a joke or something like that. But having him be an ever present threat is just not good.

Also, whatever voice you recorded doesn't actually show up on uploaded stages, so every time I kill a galoomba a bird tweets for no reason.

Also, your first bottomless pit is far too big for being the first bottomless pit of this theoretical mario game. It was a good idea to have the upper area cut the distance needed to jump essentially in half, but it still doesn't quite work because it's too high up and the player can't see where they need to land, making it a leap of faith. Again, not good for the first bottomless pit a player will ever see.

The rest of the level is fine, although a bit too simple, even for a 1-1.

Sorry if this sounds harsh. This isn't meant to be a "your lvl sucks!!" post. It's just a "your level isn't a 1-1 level" post. But you've got the foundation for a good one. Removing the egregious parts and fleshing out the rest will make for a good level on the foundation you've made.

So I decided to play some GAF levels before bed. Decided to take notes as I played

R00bot - The Great Galoomba Factory(V2.0)
o First part of the level with the chain chomp looks like you are supposed to get past the cloud tile, and it is perfectly possible to do so with a well angled crouch jump, but it seems it just takes you to a part of the level that acts as a mechanism for galoombas to be catapulted onto the playing area
o I know for sure there is an alternative solution to the Bowser room but I am not sure how to get to it
+ Exploration of the first room instead of taking the direct path felt very rewarding
+ The Galoomba making machines made having a fire flower exciting and even a bit tense
- The level stops being about a galoomba factory when you enter the ghost house room
- The boo placement makes fighting Giant sized Bowser more cramped
- Bob-bombs constantly colliding because Giant Bowser throws them in pairs finally made me download the level to change it to a non-giant variation- even that ended up tedious to fight (SMM gives boss monsters too much HP, imo)

---
braves01 - Bowser's crib
- Started out as a faithful throwback to SMB. 1 castle levels, but the mood was shattered by the SFX in the first mushroom block
+ Other than the sound effects that wasn't a bad level, all of the obstacles were nicely spaced which I enjoy

Bowser's bone cruise
+ Very fun level! Manges to incorporate jumping over spike gameplay with the well spaced obstacle design like the previous level

Mario Horror Story: Boo House
o I accidentally beat this level, I felt like the other paths were red herrings to I went with it

Yo dawg, I heard u like airships
+ Another fun level, I'm just a fan of the obstacle placement and level layout in general

---

I was planning on playing more but I'm feeling like stopping for now.

So how are people unlocking everything in one day?

Nintendo's hand holding is frustrating. I'm making some neat levels that could be so much better if I had access to everything from the start.

It's forced me to be creative with some of the bare essentials which is nice learning, but at the same time my first levels are the ones that have aged the most poorly

EDIT: Oh, right. How to unlock everything in one day: you create until it tells you when the next shipment arrives, then you make sure you've tried out every item marked new and then spam blocks until it gives you the next shipment of tools

People love Nintendo so the reviews are all positive, and even though I've had my fun making and sharing levels, the editor and game in general are painfully, painfully lacking for a $59 title. I can't believe the huge negative points aren't highlighted in reviews.

A Mario World-like level, with a few secrets, shortcuts, and finding where to go. A little more difficult.

I still have some others' levels to get through, but give some a try and post your own I'll give them a shot. :)

I like this level. I enjoyed finding the secrets (though I doubt I found them all). Bowser Jr was actually a pretty good addition to the stage. Otherwise getting the P-switch would've been too easy. And having to use to P-switch to get into the pipe was a good use of organic, folded level design. It's also a good example of layered design. Having to move back to the pipe while being tailed by bowser junior with a P-switch in hand is good fun. Though I could have also hit the P-switch right away. Then I wouldn't have to worry about carrying it and placing it, but avoiding the chain chomp would have been more difficult because the safety net of blocks would be gone (and of course, if I didn't bother dispatching Bowser junior first he'd be a threat as well). It's a good example of how simple interactions and simple choices can lead to unique challenges and gameplay experiences. Which is really what Mario is all about, so good job!

Yeah, the fact that there isn't an option to just unlock everything is silly. That said, it took me less than an hour to unlock everything. I just used all new items a lot and spammed blocks. Made some silly levels that way.

I don't know what all I'm missing, but I KNOW I'm missing warp pipes. I don't want to sit aroudn for an hour placing things to unlock it.

Well I made a new one...this one is definitely not as good as my other levels, but they can't all be winners. However, I say this and I see that it already has 3 people who played it and 3 stars, with a 60% clear rate. Go figure.

Ice blocks are raining down on you from above! But they're a little too fast to dodge easily and they feel random, like it's not your fault if you get hit. I spent all evening on it and I didn't want it to go to waste, so I put it up anyway, but it's not really fair to the player. However, it's still a fun idea at heart. I tried to compensate by giving out plenty of powerups.

Just launched a Levels section on my website. There is a wide range of filters to find the exact level you want. (Well when there is more levels in the database)

An example of the type things you can find is a list of all submitted Musical Levels or Super Mario World levels that follow a traditional platformer style. You can currently submit levels by either using the Miiverse post URL or manually entering all the data yourself. I highly recommend using the Miiverse post URL as it will do the majority of the work for you. Plus it will add your level to your very own Creator Page.

Example Creator Page : http://www.mariomakerhub.com/creators/kopurista

Creator Pages are an early feature designed to quickly and easily display all your created levels. Any level you upload to the website using the Miiverse post URL will automatically be added to your creator page.

We also plan on adding a "Worlds" section similar to playlists in the neat future. Create a series of levels that all follow a theme? Rebuild all the World 1 levels from Super Mario Bros? Just want to share a mix of awesome levels from other users? Add them to a World and share them with the world!

I hope someone finds this useful and I would love some feedback as it's in a very early stage. Also the key to this working is people adding levels, so I hope you guys do!

Erm... Why does it have bowser exactly ? That seems strange and there's a giant pit near the beginning too, but the rest of the level seems like an honest (if somewhat underdeveloped ) attempt at 1-1

I'm super confused by this

If this is an honest attempt then, it's too sparse after the giant pit.
Think of all the fun stuff you can do in a Mario game (finding secrets, kicking koopas into weird places) and setting up easy opportunities for players to find them.

As is, it's too empty, also don't have a bowser and giant pit at the beginning

I like the level, but you can't have Mega Bowser on level 1-1! Haha. I would suggest removing him and possibly adding a power-up to the level, like a Fire Flower or even just an invincibility star and some enemies to knock out.

If you want to submit this for the contest you might want to consider making some major changes.

Right off the bat, Bowser chasing you through the entire level is a big no. Thanks for all the feedback. My concerns for the stage were (not bowser) the size of that first pit and the lack of enemies.

The upper platform of that first pit is measured so that if you throw a shell it hits the ? Box below, and if you run off then you'll land on the edge below, but the not being able to see the landing is a little bit of a problem. I will decrease the size of the first pit, I don't know if I'll adjust the platform height to see below though.

I actually counted the enemies in the first stages of the first Mario Bros and Super Mario World to determine about how many enemies I should have. First Mario has 16 enemies and Mario World has 20, but 10 are in a row waiting to be killed with a red she'll. I will probably work on enemy placement and I see if and where I'll add some new enemies.

I like having bowser right there at the beginning, but it can be a little hassle. Consensus is that it's a bad idea for 1-1. That's fine. The stage is a little simple, but again, it's 1-1, I was thinking a giant bowser was adding a little flare. There are a few secrets here and there, I tried to make them somewhat obvious, like the star which can be used to kill bowser.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback and no one was too harsh, I am asking for criticism. And that stupid bird noise, I realized after I uploaded it that the little poot noise I used didn't upload too. It's a shame, give the goombas a little life.

Great work!! <3

I asked this earlier but didn't get a response, I'll try one more time. How does Nintendo determine the difficulty level in 100 mario challenges? I'm doing a medium run and more than half of the levels are horribly made but unbelievably easy, they are all the shortest possible amount.

If there is anything good about how terrible so many of these levels are, it's that it makes me feel much better about my current 1-1 stage.

EDIT: Not joking, just started the next level after posting this and it is two layers of bricks that go for about 5 seconds while running and then the flag. Not a single enemy or a single obstacle. Dafuq, how is this in medium.

it's based on the clearance percentage and you know how whacky that number can be

rule of thumb: it's always at least 20% lower than it should be.

Awesome! I'm adding my levels. The Worlds feature sounds super cool. Looking forward to it. A random feature would be cool too.

Okay, people seem to like my 101 Spikes level, so I made another one. This is obscenely hard, requires very specific actions, and took me around 10 tries to finish it so I could upload it. Play at your own risk.

Been playing around with the game some, thought I'd do a thematic level; went for a haunted zoo as I thought there was a decent amount of potential there. Granted, I'm a novice level maker (and I know the level will trend to the easy end of things) but here it is to be picked apart.

Bowser's Abandoned Zoo:

Any comments and criticisms are appreciated. Hidden one ups are there if you feel like putting time in, but whether the hiding spots are legit I'm not sure on.

*edit*

Too hard to escape from the first one up. Noted.

Yeah, thanks sixfortyfive! It was a great stream, its a pleasure watching someone with amazing mario skills like yourself beat even the most insanely difficult mario maker levels.

I came up with more appropriate names for the game's difficulties.

Easy - Baby's first level
Medium - Baby's second level with a side of cheap

Fixed it for ya boyo.

100 Mario is a really good way to get a chunk of levels without having to select them, Mario Maker needs more quality control, like average time of completion.

I hope my Bowser levels nets someone another look of the 100 Mario endings

D4: The Dave Identity 1DE0-0000-0043-6437

The fourth installment of the acclaimed series Spiky Dave has officially gone live on Mario Maker. This new map is packed with classic Spiky Dave gameplay along with some new twists. Can you at last discover Dave's secret? Follow the clues. Things aren't always what they seem...

The Spiky Dave series, known for its challenging but fair, risk and reward gameplay, originally launched in September 2015 and has since garnered cumulatively over 20 stars and numerous awards. Play it today.

Challenge: Find Dave, and kill him. Both are possible to do, and will require skill and resourcefulness. The only hint I'll give is that you'll know when you've found him.

This is right now the top of the list of featured levels, at least where I am. Congrats!

Can you lead Capitan Todd through the dangers of the world? With his sturdy backpack, he cannot jump - and it's up to you to figure out how to lead him across the dastardly perils he will find! For an added challenge, find the 3 1-Up Mushrooms and the 100 coins scattered across the level - but remember, you can't jump - get your finger out of that darn A button!

Want some feedback on this one, may continue this series, there's a lot else that can be done.
(definitely want to play Spiky Dave later as well)

Want some feedback on this one, may continue this series, there's a lot else that can be done.
(definitely want to play Spiky Dave later as well)

Ha! I love it! It's a good twist on classic mario elements. Just like the real captain toad, so I approve. Can't wait for more challenging ones!

Tonight's creation: an SMB3 castle. Once again, going for something that doesn't go too far off the rails. I put a little bit more challenge in this one, but I think it's still pretty fair.

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
It was really interesting to watch someone take on my Kid Icarus dungeon who didn't know it the way I did.

I'd like to think that I'm skilled at platforming itself, but I'm terrible at mazes and puzzles. I always have an awful time remembering where things are located or where I've been.

Fun stage though, even if you're not familiar with the inspiration.

Nothing difficult but it holds a few secrets for those willing to look and possibly take a few risks :p

Okay, people seem to like my 101 Spikes level, so I made another one. This is obscenely hard, requires very specific actions, and took me around 10 tries to finish it so I could upload it. Play at your own risk.

Phew, I did it. Must have taken me 30-40 tries. I grabbed the POW block and stood in the exact position it was in just a few pixels from both the spikes and the fire bar. Was that what was intended or can you also immediately dash back out of there safely?

Been playing around with the game some, thought I'd do a thematic level; went for a haunted zoo as I thought there was a decent amount of potential there. Granted, I'm a novice level maker (and I know the level will trend to the easy end of things) but here it is to be picked apart.

Bowser's Abandoned Zoo:

Any comments and criticisms are appreciated. Hidden one ups are there if you feel like putting time in, but whether the hiding spots are legit I'm not sure on.

*edit*

Too hard to escape from the first one up. Noted.
This is a good idea, just that playing the level is pretty bland IMO. Just walking to the right, climbing across vines, and then walking to the right with a dry bones or two in the way. Maybe have the "animals" escape the zoo in the second half of the course by bob-ombs blowing up the walls as you go by? With a zoo, there could be an opportunity to leave Miiverse comments at each room describing the fauna, and then "CAUTION: exhibit closed for renovation" or something like that. Not to tell you what to do with your idea, but I think you could do a lot more with it.
