I opened my PS3 for the first time last year that was bought back in 2008, was pretty much a thin layer of dust, you could call it pretty damn clean when compared to that! D:

I play my consoles regularly and for long periods of time. I recently cracked open my PS3, PC and PS4. All of them were spotless inside. It has a lot to do with the environment you put them in as well. I regularly clean and dust my room.

It's a somewhat common occurrence with people bringing in computers that don't know how to take care of them, I don't see why consoles would be an exception.

Used to clean systems when I worked for a game store before putting them out for sale. This is about what we would see on a good day. Worst I ever saw was this + bugs + hidden pills/ condoms (PS2 with HDD bay) + cigarette smell + sticky residue everywhere.

Windex, air can, papertowels, and toothbrushes is what we used to clean.

On a side note, when I took my launch PS4 apart to reapply thermal paste to it (sounded like a hair dryer), I was shocked at how much dust was in it. We dust every week and I dust my electronics ever few days. Most of the dust had collected on the heat sink in a very thick wad that I was able to pull off by hand without it breaking. Rest of the console was only a thin layer.

Yes, this is pretty normal.

If you smoke, it doesn't take long to get like this at all. Back when I smoked 40 a day, my PC would be pretty gross inside rather quickly after a clean.

Nothing that a can of compressed air won't fix, it just looks gross.
