Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

It's tough but the jumps are doable and it feels great to pull this off. Maybe it could be a little more polished as it's not the prettiest level, but I really liked it!

Thanks for the feedback! It took me a lot of trial and error to get the jumps just right for the top section the bottom section sadly I ran out of stuff to put, so I went with a simple yet practical way to finish it.

Uploaded a video of my level "The Cake Is A LIE" (B7C1-0000-0079-1C90). It took me a while to get the boss music to last for the entire scrolling section, so I'm a little proud of it :D

You can check it here:

(That is also my channel. Going to be uploading Mario Maker stuffs as frequently as I can.)

Sorry to shamelessly self promote but I didn't hear much in the way of anything regarding feedback on any of the last couple of levels I put out, so just taking a quick second to repost.

Game of Thwomps: Season 2 - (B200-0000-0076-5097) - Mario Maker Hub
A sequel level to my original Game of Thwomps level. It's a fairly simple puzzle/race type stage where the objective is to survive a gauntlet of Thwomps. I think this one is a tad easier than my previous one but I feel like it's still pretty fun.
WVW69ibkuC4mD0WW9g

Ice Hills & Cold Caverns - (17E1-0000-0076-F781) - Mario Maker Hub
My attempt to create an ice & winter themed stage. I tried to use white semi-solid platforms from the Mario 3 set to mask the green background items and create a more winter-like environment.
WVW69ibml_8JKMn5qt

Lakitu's Lava Bubble Emporium - (5686-0000-0076-F7F0) - Mario Maker Hub
When playing Mario Maker at a friends house we realized that if you let a Lakitu throw a lava bubble, the lava bubble will become "set" to the position it hits the ground at and then act like a normal lava bubble meaning that if you let this occur enough a level can become surprisingly hazardous. So I decided to make a Mario World level based around the theme. Additionally, I used auto scrolling and Super Thwomps to kind of recreate some of the "big stompers" you see in some Mario World castles.

alright ill be back on and streaming 2 hours from the time of this post

i made a submission form that has all the info, including stream info

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1GF9h_iHp9GUy2W0Ceh_Z1nFGe-NbgWvUrnXRpBenVbQ/viewform

I will have a lot of time to stream when i do so i hope to see a lot of levels for me to play :D

the level selection will start from after the green cell in the submission list

I like

- platforming/jumping levels

- clever puzzles

- weird/crazy/funny shit (not to be confused with kaizo)

what i dont like

- multiple pixel perfect situations/jumps

- blind jumps that kill you

levels from here are usually awesome. but i always get someone not from here submitting a level that you need hours to practice and memorize just to beat.

sorry i just want to play and have fun!

Played and starred all three levels. The only one I didn't beat was the Lava one because I kept dying from the fireballs lol. The Thwomp level was really fun but upon playing it again, I realized you can skip that second room after the warp pipe by bringing the P-Switch from the beginning of the level. Overall fun levels!

if anyone wants to play my two latest, here's a repost of them.

Crystal Countdown Cavern
2BC8-0000-0080-CCA6

An underground level that somewhat revolves around the P-Switch. Includes a secret room and 3 hidden 1-Ups to find!

Dry Bones Manor

Explore and discover what lurks high above the mysterious Dry Bones Manor! Includes 3 hidden 1-Ups!

I submitted two levels, because I haven't checked if one of them is still up. It features a word, knob, that wasn't blocked at the time of creating the course.

So if KnobStopper doesn't work, then Aqua Destillata is my submitted course.

Thanks for the feedback! Also, crap, I'll have to address that flaw in the level. Either the first P-Switch is going to be a one-time-only thing or I'm going to have to block off the way to the second pipe somehow.

I'll give your levels a shot when I get home!

Just got done playing a few levels posted on the previous pages for those looking for some feedback:

Hotfoot in Mount Fire Flower
(EF39-0000-0080-79F2)

I really enjoyed the level, but was not a fan of the music block platforms mixed in during the lava floor area. Other than that I found it to be an awesome level and one that has a nice consistent aesthetic all the way through. Will be looking forward to checking out moire of your stages.

☆-4 Castillo de Bowser
(498C-0000-0080-66B9)
One of the best Castle Stages I've played up to this point. Really enjoyed the consistent layout of the stage as it didn't seem like random encounters stitched together. Overall a really enjoyable course that felt very much like a NSMB level. The Bowser encounter felt very claustrophobic, but I'm sure that was by design. Having Bowser mega sized allows it so you can't cheat and run right through, but with such little space it's quite difficult to get by without the fire flower. Really cool level regardless.

Downside-Up
C6C1-0000-0080-090F

This is a devilish stage and I really enjoyed it. Keeps your head on a swivel and makes you pay attention to the surroundings. Even though it wasn't a castle stage, it reminded me of the one level in Mario 3 with all the doors and you had to remember where each one placed you and how to get out of the castle. It was also just the right length where it doesn't get frustrating if you fail while making more progress.

Crystal Countdown Cavern
2BC8-0000-0080-CCA6

Really loved the aesthetic of this course and the layout throughout. The beginning through me for such a loop at first, just because I wasn't anticipating it, but it was a really cool introduction for what was to come during the duration of the level. It was the perfect difficulty where deaths seemed to stem from impatient play and stupid air maneuvers.

"The Cake Is A LIE"
(B7C1-0000-0079-1C90)

The start of this stage had me cracking up, and I really thought I got one over on it by entering the door instead only to be sent to the top of the sign. It was a nice touch, because it felt like it could've been a secret exit. Once you enter the pipe it's chaos inside, but it doesn't feel that difficult with the inclusion of of the special mushrooms. I only died on my first try going for the 1-Up at the very end. I didn't keep an eye on my surrounding and jumped straight into the lava pit, haha. Very awesome level.

Coin Garden Peaks
9124-0000-0080-B43A

If there was ever a level that felt like something from NSMBU this would be it. So many cool little secrets you can barely see off screen that made it feel like a genuine Mario level. It was a nice little romp though the Coin Garden that just felt right and also very fun. Will be looking forward to seeing some others.

Bowsers shoe factory mahem!
(7A36-0000-0080-F169)

This is a really interesting stage that has some nice concepts. Everything leading up to the end encounter is really well done. However, the final encounter is little on the chaotic side, but it didn't sway me on the level as a whole being really well done.

Can't wait to go through the past pages and play some more levels that were posted. If anyone has any recommendations they would like played just quote my post or send me a PM and I'll get to it.

Here are two of my newer levels if anyone would like the give them a spin:

Thwomp Chomp Challenge 167D-0000-007E-1166
Most of my levels are in more of traditional Mario stage, but this one is more of a time challenge. It all moves very fast, but if you look closely their are at least two alternate methods that lower the difficulty a bit. Short fast paced stage.

Ascending Buzzy Beetle Skyfort 5FE0-0000-0078-05DE
A more traditional Mario level using the Airship theme. This stage has a few hidden exits and secrets depending on the path you take. Nothing to crazy on the difficulty side, but it does have a bit of a challenge to it.

Ok last time I promote this stage, I promise :) I'm taking into consideration of previous feedbacks and will think about how to improve this stage later.

It is a very acrobatic and platforming heavy stage that I would say is an intermediate to hard stage. There is no unfair death or invisible blocks that will mess you up. It's just pure platforming and nothing else with a dose of chain chomps along the way. It is a short but sweet stage and I am thinking I will probably have to make changes to this stage later on to improve it even more. However, I really hope you guys have fun with this and please provide feedback whenever you have the time. I've been streaming several session of GAFer's Mario stages, so I hope I can also get some feedback back myself as well in return. Anyways, here it is, please take a look:

Name: Chain Chomp Palace
ID: 0A00-0000-007B-F75E

I've also provided a video of my play through for this stage just in case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT0bSbeTLmc&ab_channel=ShibaFanGaming. Obviously I'd love for you guys to play the stage first, but I've finally found the "best practice" per say, for this stage after many many tries. So if you're stuck and would like to see how I survived, please watch the video for the little things I did to survive :)

Feel free to also use my Youtube link to look up all the other NeoGAF stages I've played previously in my Super Mario Maker playlist :)

Anyways, feedback welcomed !

I also want there to be a way to search by stage name and maker's name. Lastly, I hope there is a "tag" system where you can tag one or two words to your stage. That way, I'd put NeoGAF tag on all of my stages :p

A Little Cape Practice : D6C1-0000-0080-87E4

I made a difficult stage, where it can sometimes be even harder depending on you let those thwomps land. Mostly me testing out behaviour of how to move something carrying an object.

I put two on the form, both from over a week or two ago (haven't had time to finish new courses; I've just been playing and occasionally critiquing). Hope you manage to get to at least one of them. They're not weird, exactly, but I always try to make courses with alternate routes, so it's helpful to watch streams to see how obvious or well-hidden everything is, or how easy they are to skip. Looking forward to your stream.

This is a very useful resource, just seeing all the different level styles at a glance. Just for getting inspiration..."oh hey scaffolding for a mine, I could use that" etc.

Excellent resource; thanks for sharing. I tried a little of everything in the editor as it unlocked, but it's a lot to keep track of, and it's useful to see everything next to the other elements of the same tile sets in one place.

Finished up World 5 in my "Create a Full Mario Game" Coming up with original ideas for stages is getting harder and harder now. I wish the "Bullet Bills coming from off screen throughout the entire stage" was an option here.

Anyway, here's 5-1. I trust everyone here knows how to find the rest of the stages from there.

Mario Gear Solid ID 2F34-0000-0059-6223
It's Metal Gear Solid as a Mario level. Infiltrate Shadow Moses, battle the Hind D, and destroy Metal Gear Rex!

Mario Goes To IKEA ID 3C20-0000-0067-3694
Mario needs some affordable Swedish furniture. Help him navigate the many rooms of the Mushroom Kingdom IKEA!

Stario Wars: M-Pire Strikes Back ID CB51-0000-005E-DB75
In this level inspired by "The Empire Strikes Back," you play as Mario Skywalker, fighting Imperial Walkers, escaping Hoth, and finding your way to Dagobah.

I played your Mario Gear Solid stage and loved it. The battle against the Hind D was awesome. I need to check more of your work when I have some time.

The idea was simple. Make a tunnel through a Wiggler nest and explore the habitat of this gentle creatures. It shouldn´t be too hard if you are patient, but if you want to speed run it Its going to be challenging since I put some springs to disrupt your pace. Enjoy!

Now that my internet is finally working properly I´ll start trying out everyone´s courses, I´ll start by the last page and play my way back, leaving feedback.

Since only two people have played this level in the 48 hours since I made it, figured I'd post it here. My goal was to make an interesting, challenging (but not stupidly so) course with the limited resources I had available (I've only unlocked up to the day 2 stuff). There are a few secrets hidden here and there, try to find them all :)

So I kind of ignored this game when it came out and I'm having trouble finding some key info that will decide my purchase.

Does this game have a way to string together levels to make worlds? I think the answer is 'no' other than a random 100 levels or something like that.

If the answer is no, has there been talk by Nintendo to add a world building feature?

You can string together 4 levels to make a world locally only, no online worlds.

Thanks for the reply. Good to know. I'm sure I'm just beating a dead horse but it's a shame that they didn't include a world editor. It still seems to be a popular game so I hope they make another or patch in a world editor even if at the expense of it being DLC.

Bom-omb Bridge (F0FA-0000-007B-A611)

I just played Bom-omb Bridge. It's a really fun level and I liked the idea of the Bom-ombs flying as you jump across and the multiple routes. The only thing I didn't like was jumping on the giant Bom-ombs because if you do not wait for the screen to scroll first you will die cheaply , as the next Bom-omb hasn't arrived yet. Other than that great job.

Would love feedback on either of these levels

I played "Under the Starry Sky". Died once, dropped in a pit like an idiot when I was jumping for those stars at the end. It has a nice theme and plays like a good classic Mario level. Starred it! I'll play your other levels soon, I didn't have much time today.

Ok I've reworked 50% of Planet 1-2! Here's V3! This time with mushrooms. I aim around 10% completion rate. Tell me how the difficulty is like now. Thanks!

Really nice level! I liked how it teaches you each of the mechanics used before the challenges start getting harder. Wanted to star it, but it seems you removed it before I could. I'll play the updated level tomorrow.

Bowser's frost-fire Fortress

There's platforming, three 1UPs and a boss fight. Nothing unfair. Just some good old-fashioned fun.

Please give it a try and let me know what you think. I'll be playing more GAF levels tomorrow after work!

Here's an attempt to get round the problem of Mario level design as I see it; play testing the levels by myself doesn't work because I know what's coming.

My latest attempt levels the playing field by giving players a bit of a preview of what's to come.

I played this (and died) about 30 times just now. I love the first bit - it's reminiscent of Super Meat Boy and if you get your timing down, it feels great. The bit that annoyed me a little was the chain chomp on the track. I'd be platforming up and he'd often be in my way so it seemed like a choice between jumping into him or sliding down into a buzzsaw. Maybe I'm doing that bit wrong. The furthest I got was just past the bomb. Was I near the end?!?!

OK, here's a batch before I give Freedom Planet a shot. Hey guys, how about we try putting up feedback and playthroughs if we're going to post a bunch of levels, eh? We're trying to all get better at making stages here.

I meant to play this stage much earlier and now I'm upset that I haven't. Really brilliant! Great balance and some very clever ideas. I like how the second half is an autoscroller not to push you, but to keep you close to the lakitus. I wish that part had it easier to see above the thwomps to maybe hide a secret, and I really wish the last part was longer so people couldn't just zip past the lakitus with the giant podobos. Really good stage, and one of the better Reznor-style bits I've seen in SMM to boot!

Crystal Countdown Cavern
2BC8-0000-0080-CCA6

An underground level that somewhat revolves around the P-Switch. Includes a secret room and 3 hidden 1-Ups to find!

I liked this but the first portion before the first pipe is way, waaaay too tight. You're confronted with the first puzzle before you have time to even look at the stage, and the blue spikes just swarm the trampoline. Ironically after that the stage becomes a lot harder but feels more manageable because there's more room to breathe. What's here after the start really works. I like it!

I went down the vine and pretty quickly was done the stage so that bonus path may have overdone it! Then I did the regular (lower?) path and it was chaos -- good chaos! Very hectic, maybe a bit unfair with the falling buzzies but I didn't die, so I can't complain too much. There's a part in the main stage where there's like two leafs in a row, which seems like bad layout. If you think there needs to be that many that close together, you've probably not balanced things quite right.

Name: Chain Chomp Palace
ID: 0A00-0000-007B-F75E

I've also provided a video of my play through for this stage just in case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT0bSbeTLmc&ab_channel=ShibaFanGaming

It works and it's tough and I beat it. Not sure what else you want for feedback. It's good. There's not really room for someone to do anything other than immediately what's ahead, but that's the point.

I was wondering when we'd get a level that went crazy with the flying wigglers! Short but sweet, wish there was more of a prelude before it all went bananas. First jump at the start is unnecessarily difficult, it's just annoying and doesn't add anything. Just put a step there and you're good.

Crumbly Cave 8277-0000-007D-30C0

Since only two people have played this level in the 48 hours since I made it, figured I'd post it here. My goal was to make an interesting, challenging (but not stupidly so) course with the limited resources I had available (I've only unlocked up to the day 2 stuff). There are a few secrets hidden here and there, try to find them all :)

It's really short and the Goombas come at you way too early at the start, really before you know what's going on. A lot of the jumps, particularly with the first set of horizontal lifts, are much too tight. Still, the fundamentals are here. I'd love to see what you cook up with the full set!

New levels for GAF to try out! Any feedback appreciated.

Bom-omb Bridge (F0FA-0000-007B-A611)

I had to see how this compared to my stage Bounce on Big Bob-omb, and it manages to be an entirely different flying bob-omb stage, finale aside. The first chomp path requires you to make a huge blind jump -- definitely a no no. Put some coins down to help guide Mario to safety. That aside it's lots of fun. The music really sells it!

Got a new level for you guys:

Kuribo's Hideaway - F73D-0000-007D-BABC

I really tried to make this one feel as much like an authentic Mario 3 fortress as I could.

Of course, it wouldn't be a real Mario 3 stage without a few fun secrets...

Hideaway is a weird name for a castle -- is it a vacation spot? -- and there's no Kuribos, or Goombas, in the level that I saw, except one in the block in a secret part. The name aside, I think you give the mushroom and leaf way too close together -- why not just the leaf? The main stage itself is also super short. You might have done well to put some of the hidden stuff on the main path. But the original SMB3 levels were short, and you set out to make this feel like the original game, and in terms of layout, difficulty and feel, you did it. Not a bad stage at all, just an imperfect one.

Guilty White Male Mods Gave Me This Tag
I played this (and died) about 30 times just now. I love the first bit - it's reminiscent of Super Meat Boy and if you get your timing down, it feels great. The bit that annoyed me a little was the chain chomp on the track. I'd be platforming up and he'd often be in my way so it seemed like a choice between jumping into him or sliding down into a buzzsaw. Maybe I'm doing that bit wrong. The furthest I got was just past the bomb. Was I near the end?!?!
Oh yeah the chain chomps there is definitely there to stop you from jumping to high :) try smaller hops or even try ducking at the left edge of the non-treadmill platform to wait for a better opportunity to go. There is enough time to wait out certain stuff. It is unfortunate that I have little control over the small RNG present in this stage because of the nature of enemies. At where the bombs are, I'd say you are 2/3 done and only 1/3 left. Feel free to watch my video posted in my previous post to see my official run. I don't do anything super fancy like spin jump and whatnot because I have yet to master that myself :( but yeah, watch my video for that part to see my timing if that helps you :) I saw one streamer took 140 tries to beat the stage haha

Really appreciate you taking a stab at my stage and providing feedback.

KenOD

a kinder, gentler sort of Scrooge
Going to check out a few of the levels here in a bit, and I will be sure to write up my thoughts on them.

Ok, so I have been having some trouble with my levels. From what I gather, completion rate wise, I am making my levels quite difficult, even though to me they feel like medium difficulty at worst. They've all had a gimmick of some sort, so I thought, let me try and make a Nintendo style Mario level instead. I am hoping that this isn't too difficult, although I still tried to make it a challenge.

"Sham's Path"

Traditional Mario level. Multiple paths. A few secrets. A fair, non BS challenge for sure.

Would appreciate any critique, particularly on the difficulty of the level.

I had no problem with it, so I would say you succeeded at getting it to be a medium difficulty. Easier still with Yoshi to make up for any possible mistakes. At least on the ground level.

Secret area however will prove more difficult for others due to it's slippery nature and not all that forgiving for those who haven't really learned how to do wall jumping quickly. My problem with it lies in the fact it doesn't feel like it's either needed or all the rewarding. I completed it and it didn't get me to the ending all that quicker or provide a truly challenging aspect I wanted from such things.
Perhaps that's where three 1 Ups could be located rather than elsewhere in the stage, for those on the 100 lives endeavourer. If you meant for the helmet to be the reward, other than it being required as not to take damage in the secret area, it didn't provide much out of it. That and it hilariously knocked my Mario down to near death when I hit one of the buzzsaws, but that's on my end as a fault.

One game convention that gets a lot of use is making two paths, one harder and one easier, usually higher being the more difficult yet fastest way to the end.
If you are going for a more Nintendo style. Remember most of the time they build their stages so that a player can have a sense of momentum and constant "moving forward". Your stage entertained me to be sure, but it came with a lot of stops both due to exploration and having to wait on things like enemies or hazards not because I didn't know they were there, but rather not being timed like a Nintendo style level (see speed runs of Mario stages for what I'm talking about).

A complaint I do have with your stage is that of the start. So much of the starting real estate is taken up by the spinning fire flowers and the other decorations bellow. Reducing how much space one sees of Mario and the stage at the start can put people off as Mario games so often show off so much right away. It's an interesting sight due to that, but I just don't see your stage benefiting from it any.
This perspective at the start would be better off for a haunted house or a castle, to help feelings of confined spaces/claustrophobia.

Let me know what you think!

Not bad. I'm glad there were plenty of power ups to go through as I found it best to just go as quickly as possible in that stage. Some might be annoyed by leaping blind into the path of the cannonballs however.

Well, I hit the 10-level cap after a couple weeks of experimentation. Now that I have to actually delete levels to upload new ones, here are the ones I think are any good. Hope you enjoy; feedback is appreciated.

Sunken Treasure! (E735-0000-003B-67A5)

This is the first level I made that wasn't just a gauntlet of random stuff, and the first one that I consciously tried to make easier. It's pretty simple; try to get the treasure or just complete the level.

Das Ghost Haus (83BC-0000-0049-5A06)

My attempt at making a classic Mario World ghost house level. You'll have to find the secret if you don't want to keep running in circles...

Run! Run!! (C7D0-0000-005B-89EB)

Pretty straightforward. Keep running; there's no time to walk.

The Pretty Good Cave Offensive (1466-0000-007B-C870)

Inspired by Kirby Super Star, this is by far the biggest and most complicated level I've made. (Did you know there's a limit to how many blocks you can place in a level? I didn't until about halfway through this one.) It should be pretty easy just to complete the level, but finding all the 1-ups is a little bit trickier.

I'm not a big fan of water levels in general. So a nice and simple, yet with some exploration, and a generous fire flower made me enjoy Sunken Treasure.

Not too complicated that Das Ghost Haus. Bit short though.
Were the ghost cannons at the end just to make me lose the power-up?

Run! Run!! , exactly what it says on the tin I guess.

Of them all I would say The Pretty Good Cave Offensive is my favourite. It felt like just a good Mario stage in general, Kirby influence or not, between the platforming and the "boss rooms".
The only thing I would recommend you to change is after the wizard, it would just be a straight fall with coins leading straight down. Too easy to die there, especially without a cape, with how the coins are laid out currently.

Keep up the good work.

Heavily inspired by one of the stages in Super Mario Bros. 3, I thought I'd take a shot at it. Not a tricky level but one I hope people find fun (if you actually play with the mechanic).

New Giant Land (FD79-0000-007F-0880)
WVW69icGfXc5S22tUy

Ah switching between sizes, always one of my favourite elements from SMB3. Nice work, I feel you captured it.

Here's my take on a SMB 3 "tank" level. Should be moderate/hard difficulty. Let me know what you folks think!

Tank! Tank! Tank!

C152-0000-007E-2B5E

A difficult one to be sure, close to requiring memorisation for a few sections, but otherwise quite manageable. Though I think it wouldn't hurt the challenge any to spread some of the moles out just so that the player has more room to jump when between tanks.

Ok, I'll give this a shot.

I would appreciate some feedback for my level:

The Flying Fortress of.....Love
WVW69icCs50KGYVlhk

Course ID: D5F3-0000-007E-40A3

An intermediate-level type of course.

It's not: chaotic, gimmick, auto-play, music, amiibo display, extra easy, nor insanely hard.

My goal was to create a level that is fun to play. But without the characteristics described above. I wanted to create a stage as if it was part of an actual Mario game.

I hope you guys enjoy it.

Later tonight I'll give some of the stages you guys have been posting here a try :)

While it's true it's not any of those things, it does fall into the camp of requiring memorisation, such as the P-Block, and that causes the stage to suffer some personally. Enough I didn't finish it simply because I didn't want to go through some of those sections again at least.

How the spiny enemies was nice though. It was fun to have to hop between though, even if the buzzsaws right afterwards weren't so enjoyable.

Another Toad in the Wall (F3C2-0000-0080-207D)
Leave them Toads alone! It's a small puzzle level.

Nice one. Ended sooner than I thought it would, but took me a nice short ride that Captain Toad would be proud of.
