WSJ: Nintendo Begins Distributing Software Kit for NX (Console + Handheld units)

“We are increasingly of the idea that Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U,” said David Gibson, an analyst at Macquarie Capital Securities.
Ha, called it.
People who were saying "no sooner than 2017" are looking silly.

I doubt they're releasing software kits only 14 months before release date. I just don't see Holiday of next year as being a feasible timeframe for a launch. I don't really expect Nintendo to launch both a handheld and a console at the same time, either.

I'd guess this is for the first of a two form-factor platform sharing architecture, with the handheld coming first and the console a year later.

Of course I'm curious about what they have in store this time. But I haven't been interested in a Nintendo console since the Gamecube so I'm not going to keep my hopes up. I'll be playing Xbox One and PS4 for years to come, and that's probably more than enough.

Question is, though: will Nintendo really release a handheld this time? With mobile games on the horizon are they really ready to support a handheld, a home console and mobile gaming all at once?

Imagine a console combining handheld gaming and stationary gaming, powerful enough to have full third party support from the biggest publishers AND with an amazing first party support Nintendo is known for. My god, it will be a fucking BEAST!

If there is a unified account system across ill platforms and a way to transfer my content from the wiiu im in day one.

Otherwise? Maybe in 5 years, maybe never.
I dont have infinite money or time and there are plenty of options. Nintendo needs to lead features wise to compete.

Also, this account should extend to mobile. Not all games need to be playable on all platforms but they need synergistic integration.

Don't know what Device Preview is doing here and it's probably just related to something on the website itself but it's worth posting nonetheless.
I'm digging through the new site too. It's a deep rabbit hole, way deeper than WarioWorld (at least the 2012-2014 version).

And there are some less appealing security measures, in comparison to WarioWorld at least.

I am hoping if there is no disc drive, I can attach my games to my NNID and just redownload them on the NX. It will probably have a 3DS cart slot though.
Also I will eat a sock if they drop NFC chip support. It is what is making the money.

People familiar with how Nintendo handles its portable systems shouldn't be surprised by the fact that it was simply a stop-gap release. It's a neat improvement, but it was never meant to stay around for long.

The fact that there is what... One game that requires the new3ds? That's a tell tale sign right there for me. It's just like when sega had sega CD and 32x yet kept releasing genesis games.

I think the WiiU is a great console but the off screen play idea came too early. Mobile processing power has come so far since its launch that I believe their original idea for the Wiiu can finally be realized.

Third parties developing games in under a year? I have a hard time believing it'll launch in the holiday.

Edit: I suppose it's possible if they're just simple ports of games releasing around that time.

Let's hope this time 3rd party will jump on board if not it's going to end up like WiiU. I'll remain sceptical until i see a year with 3rd party full on support.

The fuck does 'Industry Leading chips' even mean?

My expectations are low.

Probably not using slightly modified 15 year old CPUs and 7 year old GPU tech as a base for their system would be my guess. Anyone using it to say "high end" will probably be disappointed.

Nintendo repeating their mistakes, it seems.

Announce NX next year. Whole lot of nothing for over a year. Then it finally releases in 2017. If they are only now distributing dev kits I can't imagine it releasing next holiday season.

Didn't seem to be an issue for Ubisoft when they re-worked Killer Freaks from Outer Space into ZombiU in less than a year, also majority will be ports most likely.

Its more than 1 game actually. There ares some other low profile N3DS exclusive titles.

It is going to take more than just powerful hardware for Nintendo to get me interested in their home consoles again. I enjoyed everything up to the GCN. I tried the Wii as my primary console and was disappointed so sold it (after spending way too much money on it) and did the PS360 combo. This generation I only have a PS4 and sadly no interest in XBONE and little interest in the WII U. I do enjoy my 3DS though over the Vita. Just wish the device software wasn't so clunky and sluggish.

Yeah, I think so too. Well, maybe it's a sign that it will be pretty easy to port games to the NX and third parties could do it quickly for their 2016 titles.

Wait, did I say third parties? I can dream, right?

If it launches in November, then it is exactly a year. Honestly I think games can be developed in 1 year, but it will most likely be same quality as Wii U 3rd Party launch. So maybe Arkham Knight port?

The elephant in the room for those beginning to dream of PS4+ POWER is the goal of NX was to get the same games to be available on both the handheld and console variant. That means the handhelds power establishes the baseline, and the console can only pile resolution and maybe better AA on top. Unless Nintendo want to make 2 different versions of the same game which takes them back to square one.

I would guess that "industry-leading chips" just means "relative to the targeted price point," but we'll see.

It wouldn't exactly be hard to achieve a better price/performance ratio than Wii U.

Considering that this is Nintendo, I think expecting something below the Xbox One's power is reasonable.

This implies that the NX will be getting any third party support. A late 2016 launch is perfectly feasible. I originally expected Pikmin 4 and DKCR3 to be for the Wii U, but now I'm not so sure.

I'm guessing this is where Zelda, Pikmin 4, and possibly SMT x FE (don't remember actual name) are going. Just slap on an updated Smash 4 and a Mario Kart and you could have a killer launch...

A year of development (especially for third-party agencies) is perfectly in line for launch-titles. This actually corroborates a Fall 2016 release date.

The plan could be to launch without third parties (or most at least) and instead with really strong first party support and rely on the appeal of whatever the device is. Or they could be working extremely proactive to get ports of the next years biggest games over. Who knows.

How is this any different than any other company?

HTTrack helps. It downloads the whole website. :)

The question is will 3rd party invest in those ports for consoles with no install base.

It's going to depend almost entirely on how Nintendo works with them, I'd wager. If they approach third party relations in a similar fashion to MS and Sony, NX should, at the very least, receive some decent launch support.

Both PS4 and XB1 were announced the same year they were released. The same thing is likely going to happen with NX.

But will they be only sold together? Because if so, how much will all of this cost?

Iwata noted the idea of releasing their games on both devices was that handhelds sell better in Japan and consoles sell better in the West, so I'm guessing they'll be sold separately.
